Seconded into Petroleum Development Oman (a Shell operated company) through Granherne LLC (a Kellogg Brown & Root company) to undertake project engineering work on oil exploration facilities in the desert in Oman.
Based in the PDO head office in Muscat, I am currently running two projects responsible for the design, procurement and construction of field separation facilities.

The projects are based in the Qarn Alam Asset in Central Oman and my duties include the following:

Relocated within the company to run the site operations at the Engen Refinery in Durban where compliment of reports peaked at 600 during shutdowns – normal daily compliment of 100 personnel. Projects undertaken included:

Managed a de-bottlenecking project (oil work-up) for Sasol 3 Petroleum Refinery – Secunda. Client – Fluor Daniel South Africa. Project involved de-bottlenecking modifications to the oil work up section of the plant. Average staff +/- 100 peaking at 300 for shutdown.

LTA Construction - Robertsham - Johannesburg

Position held: Project Manager - Multi-Discipline Project

Reporting to: Managing Director

Overall manager for the erection of Phase 2 of the Namakwa Sands Project on the West Coast of South Africa. The project entailed extensions to a mineral sands mine that included materials handling, screening plant, thickening and flotation equipment. In addition to this, extensions were undertaken at the Mineral Separation Plant - 50km inland.

Civil, architectural building, structural and mechanical, piping, electrical and instrumentation discipline site managers reported directly to me. The scope of the contract included bulk earthworks, civil works as well as the erection of structural steel and installation of mechanical equipment, erection of piping, electrical and instrumentation.
Duties included financial control, planning, client liaison, reports, and personnel management, management of sub-contractors, procurement and expediting. I was responsible for the management of 700 personnel and a 400-bed artisan and labourer construction camp.

Feb 1996 to Jan 1997
Babcock Construction - Sandton - Johannesburg

Position held: Project Manager

Reporting to: Projects Director

Employed as project manager on the reline of a blast furnace at Iscor Vanderbijlpark Works. The project involved replacement of the furnace cooling water system as well as upgrading mechanical handling equipment and included a complete redesign of the cast house floor. Construction was completed on schedule at the end of October 1996. The complement of personnel reporting to me peaked at +/- 500 and the project was finalised within budget.

An inter-company transfer moved me to the South African division of ABB - boiler repair and maintenance division. My responsibilities until end August 1995 entailed project management of maintenance and modification work on boilers and boiler related plant.

Boiler overhauls at Sappi Kraft - Ngodwana Paper Mill.
Boiler re-tubes at Kelvin Power Station.
Shut down maintenance and modification work at various Eskom power stations.

In September 1995, I was promoted to manager of the proposals division, which further increased my knowledge of costing, scope definition, contract terms and conditions and client liaison.

Responsibilities as project manager included:

a) Principle liaison with the client (Eskom - the national electricity supply commission), on all construction, commercial, maintenance and engineering issues.
b) Co-ordination of major contractors, vendors and sub-vendors, including commercial issues such as erection back-charges, erection schedules, penalties etc.
c) Preparation of enquiry documentation and subsequent adjudication of contracts for defect rectification and modification/enhancement work performed on the station's plant.
d) The projection and control of costs. This includes the authorisation of all purchases, invoicing and cost allocation.
e) The visitation of vendor workshops to expedite and inspect purchased materials and equipment required for erection, rectification and modifications.
f) The presentation of project status reports to company management on a quarterly basis.

a) Layout and detailing of milling, adsorption, elution and electro-winning, classifier and thickener plants. The contracts involved were Genmin's Beatrix, Grootvlei, Kinross and Impala Platinum Mines.

b) Checking of drawings on Cobalt, Nickel and Platinum plants for Impala Refinery - Springs.
c) Checking of drawings for a coal processing drum plant - at Optimum Colliery near Hendrina in Mpumalanga.
d) Food plant layouts for Smithchem (sugar producer) and S.A. Breweries.

Whilst working for Process Plant, I contributed to the development and operation of a custom designed materials take-off system on a Hewlett Packard HP 250 computer. The software was developed to cater for the specific needs of the company and encompassed procurement, site delivery control, purchase orders and estimation.
