Presently holding position of Oil Movements Process Engineer Island View Depot

Currently providing process support to Operations, Economics & Scheduling, Instruments and Engineering in the Island View Oil Movements area as a process engineer.

Currently developing the Island View instrumentation masterplan as well as a number of instrumentation and safeguarding projects for petroleum and LPG systems. Have developed and debugged custody transfer systems. Recently lead the development of the Berth 6 demolition project involving a number of chemical and oil companies that were previously operating from that facility. Facilitated and lead the development of the project for ENGEN, TOTAL, Shell and BP for the shared oil product loading facilities on a local fuels handling berth. This included a study into shipping patterns and requirements for Shell and BP in the Durban harbour Waterfront. This study was used as a justification for the project together with other key strategic drivers. Frequently provided technical support for issues relating to the ship/shore interface on the Island View waterfront at Durban harbour. Developed the project for conversion of the supply of ships bunker fuel from pipeline to barge, including custody transfer systems. Carried out many environmental, product quality, logistic, economic and strategic investigations and followed up with project initiation and development. Developed safeguarding memoranda and operating windows. Key responsibilities include the assurance of plant integrity for steady state operation as well as change management. Currently developing design basis for surge mitigation for the 7 refinery product transfer lines to the harbour depot, as well as working in an oil industry team on the strategy for the government inland product pipeline.

Refinery Oil Movements Process Engineer

Monitored product quality and unit performance impacting on product quality.

Lead the investigation into the SAPREF DIPA (Di Iso Propanol Amine) in C3 and C4 gas stream problem after the commissioning of SRU4 (Sulphur Recovery Unit 4). Liaised with the marketers and customers in order to resolve product quality problems, complaints and operational problems for bulk LPG users. Played a key role in identifying the root cause of the LPG product quality problems experienced by SAPREF and designed and implemented a large number of Plant changes as recovery measures for DIPA in LPG. Provided process and product quality advice to the marketers and customers with a view to minimising the impact of LPG quality problems.

Provided support to the Area engineer and inspection w.r.t tankage integrity issues and lead a large number of RCAs (Root Cause Analysis).Developed and implemented a large number of plant changes in order to support the SAPREF transfer line reliability team with a view to minimising the effect of transfer outages on the refinery throughput and margin. This included the development of an Excel based tool for planning maintenance windows and managing refinery storage. Provided general process and operational support to the Oil Movements area.

Process Control Engineer in the Oil Movements Area

Provided process control support on a number of systems in the Refinery Oil Movements, Island View Oil movements and Bitumen blending. Supported three main fuel blending optimisers on the main blenders as well as the inventory management system. Developed and implemented Plant changes and developed and implemented projects in the context of process control and safeguarding. Developed, wrote and implemented custom software and graphics on Honeywell TDC3000, Dec VAX, SCADA, PLC and other platforms. Was heavily involved in the upgrade of the Blending, Storage management software and optimisers to the latest Honeywell release. (Including the installation and configuration of the Oil Movements Oracle database).

Carried out performance evaluation and validation of the Honey well tank quality estimation, algorithms and software in order to debug the optimisers after project implementation.
Reported on and evaluated product quality/give away issues to a high level of detail on the main fuel blenders and advised E&S of constraints w.r.t refinery operation.
Carried out trouble shooting on a variety of control/instrumentation/quality systems.
Carried out Instrumentation protective function evaluations (safeguarding)
Developed a number of systems interfaces in order to support/enable system integration (Robust Vertical integration - RVI)
Developed and implemented control schemes in the Oil Movements area.
Provided support to Economics & Scheduling on the scheduling packages associated with RVI. (Robust Vertical Integration).
Developed performance monitoring tools in the form of spreadsheets for automated data capture, off line optimisation and validation.
Carried out statistical process control evaluations of system/variable performance.
Lead the refinery blending team and acted as a focal point for product quality monitoring, troubleshooting and quality reporting.

Maintained wide range of electronic equipment and systems at SAPREF including telemetry, data acquisition, mainframe computers, data multiplexers, military specification thermal imaging equipment, electronic instrumentation & tank gauging systems. Maintenance ranged from system interrogation and diagnostics to electronic repairs at component level. Carried out investigations on system performance, failures and motivated/initiated upgrades. Coordinated upgrade projects from inception, design, implementation to commissioning. Maintained and upgraded the telemetry and instrumentation units for the off shore Single Buoy Mooring located at Reunion.
