Koch Pipeline Co. LP; Corpus Christi, TX; Dan Hobbs (Supervisor)
Measurement Supervisor/Koch Industries Measurement Consultant;
Initially worked for Koch Gateway Pipeline and was responsible for managing the measurement of their natural gas gathering and transmission pipelines, gas liquids, and natural gas processing plants; reduced a $4M/yr (@ $1.50/MMBTU) natural gas loss to a positive $7,000 in less than 2 years by systematically dividing the complex natural gas gathering and transmission system into smaller, more manageable pieces and installing new equipment capable of measuring more accurately; installed one of the first Daniel ultrasonic gas meters as check metering and installed others where the current measurement was either suspect or inadequate; developed a complex daily system balance which provided the technicians current data to work with instead of week-old data; established procedures and guidelines which helped eliminate waste and increased efficiency; reduced the number of technicians responsible for the systems by providing them better ways to do their job; reduced losses in an acquisition company by installing better equipment and developing a daily system balance. Managed the measurement for Koch Midstream Services in South and West Texas before it was sold. This was a very large natural gas gathering and processing company which had complex gathering systems. Eliminated poor measurement by improving equipment and mentoring the measurement technicians. Reduced accounting errors by quantifying losses due to process plant upsets which were previously ingnored. Currently managing the measurement for KPL, overseeing measurement on approximately 1.5M bbls/day of crude oil and refined product lines across Texas, Minnesota and Wisconsin. Duties include design and installation of custody transfer metering skids, several current metering projects are in excess of $3M; overseeing crude oil truck purchasing at the lease site for Flint Hills Resources; installed and oversee leak detection on inter-refinery transfer lines which move thousands of barrels/day of chemicals and refined products in Corpus Christi; experimented with several different kinds of metering for hazardous liquid pipeline leak detection; recommended and installed leak detection equipment on over a dozen liquid pipelines at less than one/third the cost of other company estimates by utilizing newer technologies such as liquid ultrasonic metering; responsible for custody transfer measurement and accounting of crude oil volumes from producer to refinery; extensive travel and field experience in South and West Texas and Minnesota.
Measurement Consultant to Koch Industries companies such as Flint Hills Resources, Invista, Georgia Pacific and Koch Supply and Trading.
Managed the inventory measurement of several large company purchases and sales for KPL and FHR. Oversaw inventory measurement for purchase of 210,000 bbl/day refinery in Fairbanks Alaska. Manged the inventory measurement of the sale of an extremely complex LPG gathering, fractionating, storage and distribution system of Koch Pipeline's LPG division in Oklahoma, Kansas and Texas. This included thousands of miles of gathering and distribution lines and underground storage caverns. Oversaw the inventory of the sale of our large crude oil terminal in Louisiana. More recently oversaw the inventory process of FHR's purchase of Huntsman Polymers in Odessa, Longview, Beaumont and Peru Indiana. All inventory procedures were done in a manner which was suitable and fair to both parties. Worked with Georgia Pacific, a paper and building products company owned by Koch Industries, to establish a guideline for the purchase of natural gas for their 300 plants and mills. No procedures were in place to monitor the quality of the measurement at any of the facilities owned by GP. Instituted an audit process for the measurement equipment and calibration procedures of the gas suppliers, which may reduce costs to GP of $3M/year by monitoring the accuracy of the supplier's measurement. Recommended stronger language in future contract negotiations which included measurement requirements by suppliers. Continually testing new equipment, and Beta testing manufacturers new products to learn what is going to be available in the future and how it can benefit KPL.
Regularly attend the API Measurement Committee meetings to better understand what is being done there and provide feedback to API from a field perspective. President of the Corpus Christi Area Measurement Society which holds periodic meetings to bring information on measurement to over 200 members in the South Texas area. Arrange and oversee a measurement school every other year which has approximately 40-1 hour classes dedicated to liquid and gas measurement.
May 1995-March 1997
Koch Agriculture Co., Rupert, ID. Tom McCaleb (Supervisor)
Division Manager; responsible for the operations of 12 grain handling facilities, mustard seed grinding plant, an oilseed crushing plant and a dairy feed mill, in Idaho, Montana, and Utah; streamlined many procedures which were being done without good economic thinking and lack of efficiencies; increased production of mustard seed plant 4 times, increased production of cleaned and sized wheat at Ogden Utah by 15 times through sound economic thinking and investing in some capital improvements; increased safety awareness and decreased accidents by a factor of 12; recommended closing several facilities that were in need of repairs above their value to the company; increased the productivity of the workforce through extensive cross-training and empowerment; worked closely with marketing to eliminate unprofitable business practices; conceived of several capital projects that led to the purchase of a small manufacturing company; proposed building a modern feed mill to support the dairy industry, which was later built; contracted out much of our hourly labor force which reduced the overall cost of doing business.
August 1993- May 1995

Operations Supervisor; responsible for the operations of crude oil gathering and mainline pipeline facilities in North central and Northeastern Oklahoma; responsible for the operation and maintenance of 45 crude oil trucks, measurement of oil into and out of the systems, construction and repair of associated pipeline pumps and piping, electronics etc; reduced the number of trucks required by more than half by implementing around-the-clock hauling, thus obtaining greater utilization and more efficient movement of the trucked oil; recognized poor performing systems that were in need of repair and reduced the number of active gathering systems which decreased operating costs; increased productivity by eliminating potential environmental incidents, and reducing maintenance costs.
