These projects over the next 5 years consist of Detail Design and FEDs for carbon steel, GRE, DSS pipelines.
Responsibilities:
1) As EMC coordinator on all Engineering and Maintenance Contract (EMC) Projects, my responsibility was to manage the projects by leading some of the projects directly and supervising the projects progress and details on other projects, scheduling and controlling the projects with assigned manpower, preparing all deliverables
2) Presently lead engineer on twelve EMC projects involving CS, DSS and GRE pipelines.
Deliverables Produced:
I was directly involved in the preparation of documents like Survey Scope of Work, Linepipe Specifications, Wall thickness Calculation reports, Road Crossing Reports, Stress Analysis Reports, Hydrotest Reports, Other material specifications such as Barred Tees, Flanges, Isolations joints etc were made under my supervision.
Special Features:
My role as an EMC Coordinator has helped develop my multi-tasking skills. Each individual project posed a challenge in itself with regard to schedule, manpower and design. I am also involved in managing interfaces with MMC disciplines and with client (PDO) engineers.
Project Title: Shams GRE Failure Investigation Project Type: Analysis
Brief Project Description:
The project involved investigation of the causes of failure of a condensate GRE piping system during operational conditions. The focus of the project was on isolating the reason for the failure occurring and rectifying the design so that the repairs can be carried out and operations can resume in the shortest possible time. The project involved doing static stress analysis on the original system under actual site conditions and simulating the conditions relating to failure. The project was to be completed with high constraints of finding a solution without disturbing the adjacent systems. The area which was particularly checked was a Tee location where the actual failure had taken place. The system re-design exercise resulted in a reduction of the maximum operating stresses by 23%.
Responsibilities:
My responsibilities were to complete a stress analysis study of the original design and to create a simulation of events leading on to the failure in the particular system. Once the problem had been located, I had to re-design the system so as to ensure safe operational conditions. The system had to be analyzed in depth with attention not only to the failure but also to make sure no other failure will take place.
Deliverables produced:
As this was mainly a stress study project, I prepared a stress comparison report comparing the original system with the final modified safe system with a comparison of operating stresses on the whole system and the tee location where failure had taken place earlier.
Project Title: Touat Fields Development Projects Project Type: DD
Brief Project Description:
Approx. US$ 115 million dollar project for developing the oil fields of Northern Algeria. The project comprised of constructing a network of 30 production gathering flow lines, 2 field processing facilities, 1 central production facility (CPF), 2 oil and gas trunk lines, a camp and a crude oil export pipeline to transport the stabilized crude oil to refinery approximately 81 km from CPF for further treatment.
Responsibilities:
My responsibilities were principally as the stress engineer in this project but I also supervised the senior designer and his team in preparation of various drawings like alignment sheets, plot plans, study and clarification of FED reports and road crossing calculations. I completed the stress analysis study for the flowlines, trunk lines and the main oil pipeline.
Title: Yemen LNG Pipeline Project Project Type: DD
Brief Project Description:
The project was to construct a new grassroots LNG plant facility located in the Republic of Yemen. It will be capable of producing 6,900,000 Mtpa of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in two processing trains, along with LNG storage and loading, flare systems, the marine installations, LNG transfer facilities, and all associated utilities, offsite and infrastructure facilities. A new 320 km long, 930.4mm ID, Main Line will supply the natural gas to the liquefaction plant. The Main Line includes a metering system and scraper launcher, 10 intermediate block valves, and a scraper receiver at Bal Haf. The project also included a new 25 km long, 30" OD Transfer Line. The transfer line will be a bidirectional line to transfer natural gas between two stations. The Transfer Line includes a scraper launcher and a scraper receiver.
Responsibilities:
My role in this project was as the principal stress engineer, checking piping layout to check excessive stress build-up, checking possibility of upheaval buckling, calculating the loads on valves and scraper trap flanges during various conditions like operating case, Blowdown case and maintenance case.
Deliverables produced:
I was responsible for preparing a stress analysis study report of the piping layouts, upheaval buckling report, Blowdown and Maintenance conditions stress report. Towards the end of the project I had to prepare a stress comparison report which compared stress at elevated temperatures as opposed to the normal operating temperature. This report was specifically produced to check the effect on the pipe if it was exposed to direct sunlight in operating conditions as opposed to the normal buried conditions.
Special Features:
This project was unique in itself due to the terrain over which it passed with total change in elevation nearing one kilometer. The aspect of upheaval buckling was analyzed thoroughly with respect to the cover and grade elevations. This project also made me understand the behavior of stresses in the pipe under various conditions like Blowdown and Maintenance cases. A flange leakage analysis was done at the scraper traps to ensure the loads developed in the flanges were sustainable. This project also exposed me to onshore anchor block design.
Title: EPC for pipelines for MMCD Phase 2 and AL-Khlata Water Injection Phase 3 Project Type: FED and DD
Brief Project Description:
A US$25 million project to develop the Al-Khlata region for circulating injection water into the other wells in the area. The project comprised of installing an approximately 4 kms 36" buried CS bulk fluids pipeline, a 24" PE-Lined CS above ground water injection pipeline, three 12" PE-Lined CS above ground water injection pipelines which would tap-off the 24" WI pipeline. Upon successful decommissioning of the 36" pipeline, a procedure for de-commissioning the existing 14" pipeline had to be prepared.
Responsibilities:
I was the lead engineer of this project responsible for preparing and supervising the preparation of pipeline documents. I had to interface with clients and project engineers and various departments within the company. I also had to ensure the project was maintaining the project schedule. I had to manage the design team in preparation of various pipeline drawings like routing plans, plot plans, pipeline details drawings and MTOs.
Deliverables produced:
I was directly involved in the preparation of documents like Linepipe Distribution Reports, Wall Thickness Calculation reports, PE liner design specs, Road Crossing Reports, Stress Analysis Reports, Hydrotest Reports, Commissioning reports, De-commissioning reports and procurement specifications for linepipes, barred tees, ball valves, fittings, PE liner, flanges, Scraper traps, Pig signalers, corrosion monitoring accessories. Other material specifications for thermal relief valves, external coating, rotolining, shrink sleeve were made under my supervision.
Special Features:
The main challenge in this project was to route the pipelines in a heavily congested brownfield site. The presence of the PE Liner also made it difficult to have expansion joints within the line. The lines were ultimately designed in a zigzag pattern which helped in reducing the stresses and making PE-lining possible at the same time. This project exposed me to the behavior of stresses in zigzag pipelines and design of special supports where the location was critical.
Title: Oman Gas Network Study Project Type: Concept Design
Brief Project Description:
The Oman Gas Company (OGC) undertook a study of the complete Gas network in the sultanate of Oman. The aim of the study was to redesign the complete network to distribute the gas more efficiently while making provisions for new export lines and reduce imports into Oman.
Responsibilities:
As a pipeline engineer in this project, I had to assist the process discipline engineer with the hydraulic study of the gas network. My role was to supervise the preparation of route drawings of the existing network with the help of a designer and then pass on these drawings to the process engineer for completing hydraulic study on PIPESIM. Once the model was completed, we had to run various scenarios trying out different possibilities of tap-off for pipelines to increase the target delivery volume in specific region.
