Reservoir Engineer / Software Engineer
Seeking to return to reservoir engineering contract work after a spell in the telecoms industry.
Available immediately.
Summary of experience
11 years oil industry
7 years telecommunications
1 year commercial aerospace
4 years travelling
1Q2007 – 2Q2008: Travelling: India, Nepal. Photographer, Osho Times, Pune, India.
2Q1999 – 4Q2006 (with breaks for travelling): T-Mobile, Hatfield, UK.
Analysis, design, development and deployment of database system for version control of pre-pay mobile phone rating data. The solution allowed for unspecified future changes to the data model. Coding was in ProC using dynamically generated SQL on a Unix/Oracle 10g platform.
Technical liaison for inter-company projects with Virgin Mobile. Technical architecture design of data integrity system covering several of T-Mobile's systems. Technical design and implementation of various software components of pre-pay mobile phone rating system. Coding almost entirely in C/C++, with embedded SQL, on a Unix/Oracle platform.
Travelling: India, Nepal, Australia, South-East Asia, Tonga, Western Canada.
1Q1995 – 1Q1999: BP, Sunbury-on-Thames, UK.
Design of new algorithms and development of code for scaling fine geological reservoir models to coarser numerical models for simulation of fluid flow (upscaling). In addition to improving static upscaling, much focus was on relative permeability upscaling using numerical methods, i.e. pseudo-function generation. A multi-stage upscaling approach was taken for the two phase work, starting from core-scale models, through bedding models (Bedsim), to full scale sector models. Upscaling methods were explored in relation to complex features such as fractures, faults and cross-bedding. Technical support to asset groups for upscaling. VIP, Eclipse, C, C++, Unix.
4Q1994 (and ad-hoc consultancy at other times through to 2003): GeoVisual Systems, Ascot, UK.
Development of software for the upscaling of reservoir models, in a specialist petroleum engineering software company. Various new algorithms were designed and developed for the upscaling of attributes. New methods were also deployed for grid mapping when both fine and coarse grids exist independently. C, Unix, Fortran.
4Q1993 – 3Q1994: GEC-Marconi, Portsmouth, UK.
Software development for in-flight entertainment system for Boeing 777. C, C++, Unix, Sybase, Visual Basic, Windows.
3Q1993: Cheltenham & Gloucester Building Society (telecoms dept.), Gloucester, UK.
Development of computer to PABX interface for customer services. C, Unix.
1992 – 1993: Travelling: Caribbean, Chile, Pacific Islands, New Zealand, Australia.
1985 – 1992: BP, Sunbury-on-Thames; London, UK; Stavanger, Norway.
Various roles: Reservoir engineer responsible for simulation of the Gyda field (Norway), providing production forecasts, reserves assessment, guidance for well control operations and assessment of potential well locations prior to drilling. Eclipse simulator technical support (London). Fortran 8X compiler development for a novel in-house parallel processor (Sunbury). Data analysis software for subsea data logging equipment. Eclipse, Pascal, Fortran, C, Vax/VMS.
1981 – 1985: Edinburgh University, UK. Computer Science. BSc. Hons. 2.1.
1963: Born, UK.
Interests: travel. photography, mountains, reiki (qualified reiki master), Eastern philosophy.
