Principal Responsibilities
Support plant operations for continuous production of pellets.
Switchgear operations.
Conduct fault finding on the plant's electrical power and control system during malfunctions.
Performs motor terminal disconnection, insulation testing and reconnection of AC and DC electric motors.
Conduct inspections on electrical equipment using vibration and infrared instruments and provide recommendations according to recorded readings.
Perform inspections on SCADA network devices/ PLC's.
Performs electrical installations according to AS/NZS 3000:2000 Wiring Rules.
Performs Low Voltage and High Voltage isolation and switching.
Performs other functions as per Supervisor's directives.
Switchyard Engineer
September, 1997 – September 15,2007 (10 yrs.) PNOC–EDC, Transmission and Dispatch Department
Principal Responsibilities
Operates and maintains the high voltage switchgears and all electrical equipment of the power plant switchyard. Scope voltage is at 230 kV.
Performs electrical installation, wiring, connections, testing and troubleshooting of control systems.
Conduct report interfacing with CE power plant and FCRS operators.
Performs control room operation at the Marshalling Substation.
Logs hourly the system parameters as indicated in the SCADA computer display and control panels such as voltage, power, amps and vars on an official data form for future reference.
Examines in detail any deviation of data recorded and reports to supervisor immediately so that preventive measures would be undertaken to avoid potential hazards to equipment and personnel.
Prepares reports on all relevant activities and events that occurred on the switchyard such as trippings, equipment malfunctions, modifications on the equipment and safety issues.
Gives briefing to incoming shift Engineer regarding the events that occurred, the present status of the high voltage system and all equipment of the switchyard, power plant status, steam production operation and explains the logged reports.
Perform other jobs as ordered by the Supervisor.
In the event of Power System Trippings and Switching Operations
Coordinates with supervisor when doing switching operations on the high voltage equipment and switchgears in the switchyard and ensures that the tasks are properly carried out.
Switches on / off PCBs done from the switch control panel or SCADA computer.
Switches on / off DS done on the switch control panel or on the DS local control box.
Switches on / off ES manually. Ensures they are engaged properly when closed.
Put lock-outs and tags when doing repairs or servicing after de-energizing the high voltage bays
Coordinates with power plant operators and gathers necessary information from the plant's protection relay indications and reports it to supervisor.
Records relay indications of the switchyard protection system and report it to supervisor.
Resets lock-out relays when faults are cleared to facilitate start up of generating units and auxiliaries of the power plant.
Clears the area with personnel and other unnecessary materials prior switching on the DS and PCBs energizing the switchyard.
Ensures that proper personnel protective equipment is worn when operating the high voltage switches.
Implements housekeeping before leaving the area.
Logs details of the activities.
In case of Equipment Breakdown, Malfunction and Hazards
Reports immediately any occurrence or early signs of equipment malfunctions, damages and hazardous conditions.
Facilitates repair of the affected equipment thereby avoiding costly downtime, possible injury to persons and possible damage to company property.
Operates the fire fighting equipment in case of an outbreak of fire to save company properties from being damaged.
Comply all safety rules and regulations according to the standards set in the company policies on safety.
Electrical Equipment Testing and Preventive Maintenance
Testing of Switchyard HV and Auxiliary Equipment
Tests the operating temperatures of the switchyard equipment live terminal connections with a Thermographic Scanner. Daily or weekly depending on the condition of the equipment.
Tests the operating temperatures of the battery charger electronic components and power supply transformers using a handheld Infrared Thermometer. Daily or weekly depending on the condition of the equipment.
Tests contact resistance of the power circuit breakers, disconnect switches and grounding switches using a Micro-Ohmmeter. Normally done during annual maintenance shutdown or depending on the condition of the equipment.
Tests the contact time travel of the power circuit breakers using the Breaker Analyzer test instrument. Normally done during annual maintenance shutdown or depending on the opportunity and condition of the equipment.
Tests resistance of the primary and secondary windings of transformer with Micro-Ohmmeter and compares resistance data against manufacturer's specifications.
Tests specific gravities of batteries with a hydrometer. Measures cell voltage and cell temperature. Refills with distilled water if specific gravity and electrolyte levels are low. Clean battery terminals, apply grease and tighten connections. Done monthly or when condition permits.
Tests the insulation resistance of power supply cables, using a Megger set at 5kV.Normally done during annual maintenance shutdown or depending on the opportunity and condition of the equipment.
Measures the temperature of 480 V power supply circuit breakers and cables for overheating and overloading using Infrared Thermometer. Done daily
Ensures that proper work permits are issued prior any maintenance activities involving single or several personnel. Proper safety, wearing of Personnel Protective Equipment and the established tag-out/lock-out procedures are strictly implemented
