Sparr Equipments Ltd, Bangalore, India From: - 1985 – 1990
Manufacturers of 100,150,200 mm Track Mounted Electric & Diesel Driven Blast Hole Drill, Truck Mounted Water Well Drilling Rigs (DTH & DR cum DC), Reverse Circulation Drilling Rigs, Percussion Rigs, Mud Pumps.

Responsibilities
Prime responsibility was to look after manufacturing of 200 mm RBH Sparr drill equipment in coordination with R&D. This equipment was to be introduced in India as a direct competition to IR's Drill. Sparr Blast Hole Drills RBH -200 was also fully hydraulic equipment fitted with Dynex Hydrostatic Pumps operated by Control Cable (Push & Pull) for Traction & Rotary Drive & 4-Stage Commercial Shearing Pumps for Auxiliary function.

The other main responsibilities included were, to create customer confidence for the new Drill Model. This was achieved by conducting extensive training and interactive sessions / classes for the operating & engineering maintenance staff. Specific Training imparted to optimally utilize the capacities of the Drill, and to improve upon drilling speed (Rotary Torque versus Pull down ratio) in addition to training on Prevention and Scheduled maintenance of the equipment.

The drive to Hydraulic Pumps & Screw Air Compressor (1000CFM @110 PSI) was taken from a Cummins Engine (410 HP). Rotary Head was driven by Danfoss Motor & Traction GB was powered by Sundstrand Motor. Pull down by Hydraulic Cylinders & Wire rope for better Pull down and Pull up.

The Challenges of Establishing the new Sparr RBH-200 in the Indian Coal Mining Sector:
The equipment was supplied to M/s Coal India Limited on Trial Order Basis with a condition to establish the performance within the stipulated time frame. Release of Further Regular Orders was linked to the successful establishment of trail order machine performance.

The first Drill RBH-200 was commissioned successfully at site & fulfilled all the contractual performance stipulated in the order. It was also required to conduct extensive training to the operating, engineering maintenance staff for getting optimum drilling results from the equipment and also to achieve minimum down time by adhering to scheduled maintenance.

As Product Manager - Following responsibilities were entrusted:
Create Product Range awareness to various Markets & Customers by arranging different types of interactive meetings with senior officials in Government & Private sector Buyers.

Marketing & Aftermarket Support:
Extend Technical Support to Sales and Marketing Staff with the end view to secure orders for the company. Participate in Techno – commercial negotiation of Bids including World Bank Global Bids. Strategically planning and detailing of company products to supplement the front line marketing efforts. Co-coordinating after sales services support from HQ to ensure Equipment Availability & Warranty Period Management with minimum equipment downtime to customer and minimum cost to company by ensuring timely preventive and schedule maintenance. Assess Component Root Cause Failure & evaluating Failure Analysis Reports for taking up with respective vendors.

Organize & Train Service Engineers for Reedrill products in India. Define Parts Planning and Inventory Planning for Warranty and for Post Warranty Periods. Arrange Equipment Inspection and Assessment of Parts Requirement. Identify and Advising Clients about using only Genuine Parts. Managing the after market activities by reorganizing an effective Customer Response System, effective supply chain of parts required in time.

Managing a service team of 50 personnel & training and motivating them to achieve the pre determined results of the Division. Strengthen the Dealer Network to ensure constant customer contact and satisfaction. Train Customer and Dealer manpower. Meeting predetermined sales target. Submitting Offers to clients or dealers.
International Assignment:
During my tenure in Sparr Equipments I Was deputed to Malaysia, New Zealand & Jordan for Erection & Commissioning of Hydraulic Mining Exploration and Water well Drilling Rigs and HP Compressors.

For Production & Aftermarket Parts Planning:
Participate in technical negotiation for purchase of raw material, components & systems.
Major Annual Planning for long lead items such as Prime Movers, Imported Items and critical sub systems considering the sales forecast of the company both for Production and Aftermarket. Coordinating with R&D for Parts Indigenization.

One of the Major Contributions to Sparr Drills has been to adapt and reengineer the Reedrill Equipment to suit the Tropical Indian working Conditions, which has provided in depth knowledge and exposure to all Systems of Surface Mining Drills.
