Employment History:

2005 to present: Jacobs Engineering: Instrumentation Engineer based at their Cork office. Projects include
(1) Connoco Philips oil refinery,Cork, Ireland
(2) Schwarz Pharma, Shannon, Co. Clare, Ireland
(3) Janssen Pharmaceutica, Geel Belgium.
(4) GlaxoSmithKline
(5) Pfizer Pharmaceuticals

1999 to 2005: Site Based at Eli Lilly Pharmaceuticals with Jacobs Engineering. Initially serving as Instrument / Electrical Designer and Validator before progressing to grade of Instrument Engineer.

1998 to 1999: Graduate Engineer with Project Management at their Dublin Office.

ENGINEERING EXPERIENCE:

Management & Supervision:

(1) Resource Management: I was entrusted to interview and select new personnel for projects as required. I would have interviewed and selected Instrumentation Engineers and E&I designers.
(2) Technical direction and control: I was involved in technical direction and control of junior staff on my projects on an ongoing basis. This would have involved anything from best practice in design to tutelage in instrument specifications. Analysis of methods employed by junior staff and suggested improvements for efficiency.
(3) Budget: I prepared budget estimates for proposed Instrument / Electrical work on site. This included professional services man-hour estimates from design work through to construction / construction supervision, and validation. These estimates would then culminate in the Total Indicated Cost (TIC Budget). Cost control methods were used to ensure that work was executed within budget. If projects were trending over budget then I would provide written explanations to justify the cost over-runs
(4) Front End Engineering Design / basis of estimate studies: I would create Basis of Estimate document which outlines the proposal for the Instrument / Automation front end engineering design (FEED) and detail design activities thereafter. The project execution strategy will be defined therein: i.e. creation an index based upon available P&ID's and agreeing a scope of work with the client. The Jacobs scope of work document would detail any deliverable documents and a generic list of those items for Jacobs specification. A preferred bidders (Vendors) list would be obtained from the client or would be agreed with the client in advance. Vendors were then asked for their most conservative price estimates for items within their scope of supply. A Bill of material estimates would then be created based upon these figures and would typically include costs of instrumentation, cables, glands, tray, brackets, junction boxes, isolators, alarm sounders, beacons, etc. After the bill of materials would come the professional services hour estimates. Scheduling deliverable dates was done in conjunction with the process department and with project management staff.

Instrumentation: Typical Engineering Duties include:

(1) Instrument Specifications: The specification of in-line and non-in-line instrumentation and database administration: Specification creation and checking of instrumentation and performing successive purchase order revisions and issuing as necessary.
(2) Creation of Scope of Work Document: This would comprise of an introduction; a general project / facility overview; a bill of materials indicating what is /is not part of contractors supply. Also detailed would be both electrical and mechanical installations within E+I contractors and system integrators scope(s). Drawings such as P&ID's; Electrical Schematics; Cable & Tube Schedules and locations drawings would be referred to for purposes of third party tenders.
(3) The design / specification of components for Safety / Emergency stop systems and any interlocks with fire alarm and / or BMS systems taking on board the concepts of fail safe design and / or SIL (where applicable), ladder logic: utilising relays for control and contactors for switching power. Duty-Standby external power supply design. I have often completed design drawings on AutoCad myself for smaller projects and given the work to E+I Designers for larger projects.
(4) Technical Bid analysis: Analysis of vendor proposals for material supply. The aim of these checks is to test for fitness for intended purpose, adherence to specification in terms of materials and certification(s)
(5) Sizing of Control Valves: Although sizing is usually left to the vendor I have experience in manual calculations for control valve sizing (Liquid and Gas/Vapour scenarios) including
(a) Calculation of max min Cv / Kv values (including any reduction factors (R values as specified by the vendors catalogue).
(b) Calculation tests for choked / critical flow
(c) Comparison of calculated Cv values to catalogue listings to ensure that they are between 15 and 50% of catalogue listed Cv values for a given valve.
(d) Catalogue graphs depicting % maximum flow versus % of rated travel will then be examined to ensure that the desired control may be comfortably achieved within the valves range.

(6) Regular liaison with both client and vendors.
(7) Factory acceptance tests: I went to the vendor facilities for Factory Acceptances Tests and witnessed the start up and operation of vendor systems (skids) to ensure that they worked and operated as intended and complied with regulations.
(8) Vendor documentation reviews.
(9) Interface with control systems: DCS: Traditional and remote I/O; PLC, SCADA, Profibus DP and PA, Fieldbus.

(10) Squad Checks: I participated in squad-checks for bespoke vendor packages ordered by either process or mechanical engineers. Examples include chillers, boilers, centrifuges and miscellaneous bespoke packages such as automatic drum feeders for a sites three incinerator. My input was a check to ensure that the E+I parts of the vendor package were fit for intended purpose, complied with regulations and standards and checking to ensure suitability for installation in hazardous areas. I did interface work between these packages and site control systems (both control and monitoring). Superfluous items could be flagged for removal. If extra instrumentation was required (for example alarm contacts for communications between vendor package and site control systems) such requirements would also be flagged at this juncture and the vendor would be informed accordingly.
(11) Construction & Commissioning: E+I contractors would submit tenders for proposals along with method statements [declarations of intent to do the work in compliance with all safety and wiring regulations]. I would review the tenders and then award the work. I was also involved in construction supervision and was there to give advice on any technical / design queries. I would walk down installation work to ensure that installations were done in accordance with design drawings and to the required standard in line with current regulations of quality and safety. When the installation was complete and tested I would sign off post approval signature on the Installation and Operational Qualification sheets.
(12) Demolition & Dismantling: At the end of an installations life cycle demolition work would need to be done. The following preparatory actions were taken to achieve safe demolition: A thorough review of engineering drawings for items proposed for demolition would be undertaken. This review would be done in conjunction with a site walk down to ensure that the drawings adhered to an as-built standard of accuracy. If such drawings did not exist a field survey would be undertaken and a complete package of as built drawings would be created. As built drawings were critical to facilitate safe dismantling by contractors. To ensure that proposed demolitions would not adversely effect other site systems, automation department programming personnel were asked to investigate whether the items proposed for demolition formed part of any software interlocks. Only after these rigorous wiring and software checks were complete was the green light given to proceed with demolition.

Electrical: Typical Engineering Duties include:

1) Power distribution board spec / Layout design from switch fuse section to board distribution layout: single, double, three pole breakers.
2) Cable sizing and specification calculations (instrument & electrical, SWA and shielded)
3) Hard and soft wire interlocks; Three phase motor installation and automation; VSD's; Automatic / manual motor installation design (Start /stop and Hand off Auto configurations). Direct on line and Star Delta starter configurations. Duty-Standby motor arrangements. Thermistor interlocks, Overloads, fuses. MCC (traditional and intelligent). 240VAC Control Panel design and testing, ladder logic, relays for control, contactors for switching power. MCB's Opto Isolation between 24V and 240V systems. Thorough experience in preparation of all of the schematic drawings in AutoCad.
(4) Specification of Isolators, JB's, Beacons, Control Panel Layout & Design.
(5) Design & Drawings: Thorough familiarity with good drawing office management for both Electrical and instrumentation, standards and attendant GAMP requirements for all attendant E&I documentation.
(6) Index and live database maintenance/management in Microsoft Access.
(7) Hazardous area Installations: Experienced in full range hazardous area installation techniques for both Electrical and instrument systems
(8) Trades Experience: As a student I worked for my father instrument / electrical contracting company so I have first hand experience in all of the installation work and have a sound appreciation of how long it all takes and what is involved. I even have experience in installation of unwieldy items such as 4x300 sq HV cables. I have welded and mounted all sorts of brackets; cut and installed cable tray and ladder; installed conduit & trunking. I have pulled in and glanded (both Ex and non Ex) cables. I have changed out overloads and fuses in MCC sections and installed dry run protections first hand. I know how to compensate for the inherent error in a conduit bending machine. You won't find many engineers with my level of "on the tools experience"

Software: Administrator of SmartPlant Instrumentation (SPI) database for Janssen Pharmaceutica CDPP, Geel, Belgium (Excellent knowledge of SPI). Duties include all instrumentation specification creation / modifications. I created all (Jacobs format) SPI instrument specifications from scratch at the Cork office where SPI had not been used before. I therefore have a working familiarity with page editor and the use of UDF and computed fields for spec customisation. Form editor for the creation of multi tag specification sheets. Spec DD for the creation of spec browsers. Spec Module for input of spec data. Binder module for the collation of individual reports for printing and how to create. pdf reports. Revision manager. Insertion of customised titleblocks using Infomaker. Familiar with dimensional data for piping (DDP) Knowledge of print layouts and design of spec browser views and layouts. Working familiarity with SP Integration (ask me about this topic at interview and I can detail all of the problems with it). My experience has been using SPI 2007 Version 4.

Software: Administrator of Microsoft Access Instrumentation database: Access is the database format upon which most of my experience has been based and I have a thorough working familiarity with same.

Previous Duties on site at Eli Lilly December 1999 to January 2005):

4) The specification of in-line and non-in-line instrumentation.
5) Technical bid analysis as required: Lilly had a preferred suppliers list and so technical bid analysis was not performed if items to be purchased were site standard items.
6) I began work in Eli Lilly as a designer but even when I became a senior Engineer I was still involved in the creation of Interconnection, Loop and Schematic drawings (for new installation / maintenance projects).
7) Creation of all attendant documentation for Validation: (I.Q. / O.Q. / D.Q. / I.O.Q./ Checklists etc.).Liasing with contractors and co-ordinating contractor work.
