I am a drilling fluid engineer with 31 years of experience with all types of water base and oil base fluids. When I graduated from college in 1978 with a degree in Chemistry, I immediately went to work for Magcobar as a drilling fluid engineer. My assignments were all based in the Gulf of Mexico (Louisiana). After leaving Magcobar, I worked for two different drilling fluid consultant companies. My assignments while working for them were for Exxon in the Gulf of Mexico. Exxon was so satisfied with my work I was offered the opportunity to start my own consultant company. I incorporated Southern Drilling Fluids Consultants, Inc. For 13 years my responsibilities were to aid in drawing up mud programs for each project either my self or one of my consultants was on, and make sure they were implemented. I had to supervise 20 drilling fluid consultants on Exxon and Texaco jobs. I was personally the engineer on several of Exxon's most difficult drill wells and two of the biggest projects ever under taken in the Gulf of Mexico (The Lena Tower and The Zinc-Alabaster Project). I went to work for Mud Check, Inc. as a drilling fluid consultant. My assignments were still with Exxon and then ExxonMobil. These assignments were still in the Gulf in both deep water and shelf work. I did get to do some work on land in South Texas on the King Ranch also. I was offered an opportunity with Baker Hughes Drilling Fluids to become a Senior Fluid Service Representative. I agreed to work for them and my work assignments were mostly ExxonMobil wells. I did do a couple of other major deepwater projects for a couple of other operators. These projects were projects where the operator was having severe lost returns before getting Baker Hughes Fluids. Upon Baker getting the contract for the next wells from the operator, I was sent as the senior fluid engineer to these Baker Hughes jobs and we ran Rheologic Constant Rheology Fluid. Losses on these wells were kept to a minimum and the wells were drilled under the time line and under budget.
On two other high profile deep water projects I was the on site project fluids manager in charge of the 4 man fluid team on board. All of our wells were under projected time line and under budget.
I am currently working on deep high pressure, high temperature wells in south and central Texas.
I am including in my resume some of the wells I have taken part in as a mud engineer. They cover a wide range of areas and depths drilled and problems encountered. To keep my resume as short as possible I have only listed a few of each type of well drilled. If you need any more information please feel free to contact me.
Mud types run
Water base: Lignosulfonate, Claytrol, PHPA, Penetrex, High and low lime base mud, KCL, KCL-KOH, Ligno-Pac*, saturated salt (NaCl),Pyro-Drill, Amoco Selectafloc, XCD-Drispac polymer, Deep Drill, Bara Drill N, Perflow, high pH muds with H2S scavengers added, Lignosulfonat mud with 50 pounds per barrel of calcium carbonate. (* I developed this system for ExxonMobil.)
Oil Base Fluids: Invermul, Carbo-Drill, and several generic diesel base systems.
Synthetic Base Fluids: Accalade, Baker Hughes Synteq, Baker Synteq with 50 pounds per barrel of Calcium Carbonate, Rheologic Constant Rheology Fluid, and ExxonMobil's Escaid 110 mineral oil mud.
Completion Fluids: brine, calcium chloride, calcium bromide, and zinc bromide. Mixed all types of spacers and lost circulation pills, including cross link polymers.
Operators worked for
Include Exxon, ExxonMobil, Amoco, Texaco, Superior Oil, LLOG, Mariner, Forrest Oil and Gas, Coastal Energy, Dan A. Hughes.
Experience
HPHT:
Drilled 6 wells with ExxonMobil in Mobile Bay, Al. with bottom hole temperatures in excess of 450 degrees. Well depths exceeded 20,000 feet. These wells were drilled with a water base extended polymer mud.
Drilled 4 wells on the King Ranch, South Texas, where both high pressures and high temperatures were encountered. Mud weights in excess of 18 pounds per gallon were necessary to control the wells. Bottom hole temperatures exceeded 470 degrees. Well depths ranged from 19,000 – 22,500 feet measured depth.
Drilled 6 wells Hidalgo County, Texas. Wells drilled were under balanced, with constant gas using a rotating head. Wells drilled successfully to depths of 19,000 – 20,250 feet measured depth. Technique of drilling with lighter fluid and weighting up fluid for trips, then cutting fluids back when back on bottom for drilling was used successfully.
Drilled 4 wells in High Island Blocks, Gulf of Mexico, (an area known for high gas pressures). Several kicks were taken in the process of drilling these wells. Mud weights were 16.8 to 18.3 at Total depth on these wells. Depths of wells were 17,000 – 18,500 measured depth.
Drilled several deep exploratory wells in Mississippi Canyon
Blocks, Gulf of Mexico. A lot of unexpected gas and pressure were encountered on these wells. These wells were in 4,000 - 7,800 feet of water depths. Total depths of the wells ranged from 20,000 - 23,000 measured depth.
ERD
Drilled extended reach several wells at Mississippi Canyon 311 with angles as high as 84 degrees. Measured depth on these wells averaged 19,000 feet. True vertical depth was as shallow as 9,978. Most wells averaged 6,000 feet of throw.
Drilled on South Timbalier Block 164, Gulf of Mexico, from a platform. 19 Wells were directionally drilled at high angles. Several of these wells were "S" shaped wells to avoid the other wells already drilled on the platform. Well angles averaged 63 degrees. Several of the wells exceeded 78 degrees of angle at TD. TD's averaged 17,000 feet.. Lignosulfonate mud with Soltex was used to successfully drill this platform.
Drilled 52 directional wells from the Lena Tower, Mississippi Canyon, the Gulf of Mexico. Water depth was 1,106 feet. Wells were high angle with several "S" shaped holes on this facility. Highest angle was 83 degrees with a throw of 5,700 feet. The angles on wells drilled was high due to having to drill between and around other wells already drilled. Ligno-Pac mud was used to drill all 52 wells. This is a mud system I developed for ExxonMobil.
Drilled 6 wells on Green Canyon 18, Gulf of Mexico. This was an existing platform in 1,200 feet of water. The platform was built on a knoll. Water depths around the rig exceeded 7,000 feet. The drilling was extending out from the platform under the 7,000 feet ocean floor. Very long sections of directional building were necessary to drill from the platform in 1,200 feet to beneath the ocean floor in 7,000 feet of water. Angles of these wells often exceeded 70 degrees. Depths ranged from 28,000 - 34900 feet MD. New Parks Deep Drill fluid was used on these wells.
Horizontal Drilling
Member of ExxonMobil's horizontal drilling team. Successfully drilled 22 horizontal wells. These wells were drilled in both West Delta and South Timbalier Blocks, Gulf of Mexico. Lateral sections were 1,000 - 3,000 feet in length.
Total depths of wells ranged from 15,000 – 19,900 feet. Drill in fluids were used on these wells.
H2S Experience
Drilled 6 wells in Mobile Bay for Exxon. This area is known to have some of the highest concentrations of H2s in the world. Under went extensive training before this project started in proper proceedures and techniques to safely drill these wells. Passed FIT test received certification in the use of a Scott air pack. A mud with H2S scavengers was used to drill these wells. Monitored sulfates with a Garret Gas Train.
Drilled several land based wells in Alabama where a high pH mud was used to control H2S at the surface. H2S scavengers were eventually added before TD was reached.
Deepwater Experience
Drilled 6 exploratory wells in Mississippi Canyon Blocks. Water depths ranged from 4,000- 7,800 feet. Well depths were 24,500-29,700 MD.
Drilled 5 wells in Alamos Canyon. Water depths were 7,400-9,163 feet. Total depth of wells was 18,800 - 28,600 MD.
Drilled 3 wells in Ewing Banks Blocks. Water depths were 4,200 - 6,940 feet. Total depths were 19000 - 21640 MD.
Drilled 4 wells in Green Canyon. Water depths were 7,800 – 9,980 feet. Total depths of wells was 29,000 – 34,008 MD.
Drilled 3 wells in Garden Banks. Water Depths were 6,900 – 9,200 feet. Total depth of the wells were 20,900 to 26,378 MD.
Problems encountered while drilling wells
Lost circulation
Have mixed and pumped nut plug, mica, sized fiber, Steel Seal, calcium carbonate, Pronto Plug, Kwik Seal, Chek-Loss, Gunk squeezes, Barite Plugs, and High fluid loss squeezes. While using many different combinations of these products we were able to stop lost returns in many wells that had total loss returns. Both spotting of pills and squeeze techniques were used on these wells.
Used Exxon's fracture sealing procedures. This was using sized Barite in a high fluid loss pill. The sized barite would fill the fractures and keep the fractures open and filled. Several pills of the sized barite would normally have to be squeezed before the fracture would be sealed. Exxon eventually found out that medium walnut hulls worked better than the sized barite for this procedure.
Ran both water and oil based fluids with 50 pounds per barrel of sized calcium carbonate to control seepage. While drilling with these fluids, sweeps with LCM in them were used to aid in sealing seepage and avoiding total lost return.
Dealt with total lost returns in horizontal sections. Products used included Cruseal (crawfish shells), sized calcium carbonate including large flakes, and Perfflow. Pills mixed and used were limited to products that could be acidized and dissolved so there was no permanent damage to the production zone.
Stuck Pipe: Actually I have had just a few experiences with stuck pipe. I have always felt that running the best and most cost effective mud leads to little or no stuck pipe. In the few instances we had stuck pipe I mixed and spotted either Black Magic, Coastal Spot, or Pipe Lax (depending on what type of fluid was being used). We had some success when the pills could be spotted quickly after becoming stuck.
Hole Cleaning: I am experienced in mixing all kinds of sweeps to aid in hole cleaning. These include thin thick combination sweeps, weighted sweeps, high fiber sweeps, walnut hulls sweeps, Deep Sweep sweeps (this is large ground barite which is removed at the shale shakers). Attended K&M School on Extended Reach Wells and Proper Hole Cleaning Techniques.
