Served as Unit leader for the Outside Battery Limits (OSBL) portion of the Kemya Petrochemical Company Major Projects (Phase 6) in Al-Jubail, Saudi Arabia. Project involved installation of new custody transfer meter skids, instrument air compressor, seawater pumps, and miscellaneous pipelines in support of the new Olefins Plant and the new LDPE Plant. Utilized Intools to create instrument data base which was used by multiple users simultaneously. All instrument data sheets, wiring schedules and loop diagrams were created using Intools. Multi-unit project with interfaces to distributed control system field termination units. Distributed control system configuration was done by others. Interfaced with piping, process engineering, and electrical engineering as well as client engineers and management. Wrote specifications for the installation of the new Saudi Aramco Hawiyah Gas Plant including compressor control systems, vibration monitoring systems, burner management systems and triple modular redundant programmable logic controllers (TMR PLCs) for emergency shutdown systems. Trained new instrument engineers on the sizing of instruments, development of instrumentation for P&IDs, and preparation of logic diagrams and elementary diagrams.

Acted as a Mobil project engineer taking the lead for several instrumentation projects as well a supporting other project engineers with their instrumentation requirements on multi-discipline projects. Supervised the instrument and electrical engineering contractors of the Project Services group in the Project Management Department of the Mobil Torrance Refinery. Managed manpower requirements, assigned tasks to the electrical and instrument engineers to satisfy the project management customer, administered group's time sheets, etc. Engineering project work included assembly of cost estimate and schedule packages for authorizations for expenditure (AFE), piping and instrument diagram (P&ID) representation of the control system design, specification and purchase of instruments, creation of instrument and electrical drawings for construction, troubleshooting during construction and start-up. Completed numerous instrument projects including installations of sulfur air demand analyzers, BS&W analyzers, desalter level probes, nuclear level transmitter installations, ultrasonic flow meters and other difficult instrument applications. Assembled and maintained a local area network (LAN) based data base of the flow elements in the refinery so all interested parties could easily access current flow design parameters. Studied the existing Modicon PLC program, modified the programming, emulated the performance of the program, and tested it on the field equipment for the gasoline loading rack and the Coke Barn Conveyor. Taught the maintenance personnel how to troubleshoot the PLC programs. Frequently called on to train new instrument engineers.

Functioned as the Engineering group supervisor for the UNOCAL Los Angeles Refinery and the UNOCAL Santa Maria Refinery waste water treatment modification projects. Responsible for showing instrumentation on the P&IDs, production of the instrument index and data sheets using the computer aided instrument and electrical system (CAIES), creation of installation details, location plans and loop diagrams (drawn by others) on computer aided design/drafting (CADD), assembly of material requisitions for instruments (including specifications, data sheets and vendor data requirements) and preparation of logic diagrams. Both projects included revamp work that reused or replaced existing instruments. Instituted designs to connect field instruments to the Rosemount RMV-9000 distributed control system (DCS) at the UNOCAL Santa Maria Refinery. At the UNOCAL Los Angeles Refinery, purchased and programmed a Reliance Automate 40X programmable logic controller (PLC) for installation on their wastewater effluent unit. Coordinated the design and construction of several modular control buildings. Interfaced with the mechanical group for production of P&IDs, with the electrical group for wiring of instruments and control of motors, with the civil/structural group for foundations and plumbing, with the architects for building layout and specifications, and with the piping group for location of flow elements and control valves. Worked with scheduler for development of engineering and construction schedules. Produced estimates for material costs and man-hours required. Trained new instrument and control systems engineers.

Performed electrical maintenance at the ARCO Prudhoe Bay, Alaska facilities during the start-up of the oil field on the north slope of Alaska. As a remote oil field, the daily maintenance program including the water treatment plant from the pump at the river bank to the treatment systems, the sewage treatment plant, the crude oil topping plant which produced the fuel for the vehicles, living quarters including the coffee urn and the washing machines as well as the oil field equipment. Field work included electrical motor troubleshooting and repair, lighting maintenance, installation of conduit and wiring systems for new instrumentation, calibration of electrical power metering and protective relaying (overcurrent, undervoltage, ground detection, etc) in medium voltage switchgear, inspection of medium voltage starters, start-up and synchronization to the main power system of stand-by electrical generators, testing including meggaring of motor and hypoting of medium voltage cable, preventive maintenance inspections, circuit breaker additions to load centers, etc. Interfaced with management, engineering, purchasing, maintenance technicians, and warehouse management in the implementation of the electrical spare parts program. Worked with the training group to implement an electrician training program establishing milestones for the promotion of new and experienced workers.
