Professional Experience

Sr. Staff Engineer at Hercules Inc. July 2006 – July 31, 2009 (3 years 1 month)

* Saved $ 1.2 MM through the alteration of materials handling of cutter blades which eliminated compound fretting fatigue. This project reduced the chance of catastrophic failure of a cutters by practically 100%

* Conducted failure analysis of critical processing mixer leading to redesign by engineering vendor eliminating blade tip fatigue and process shutdowns saving $ 2.0 MM.

* Led international team in the investigation of two failed coiled serpentine heat exchanger dryers to determine the root cause of the failures. Dimensional modifications were made to one dryer while the other needed an upgrade in materials of construction and welding procedures at a cost savings of $ 2.5 MM.

* Extended the life of critical Kymene reactors to allow for continued operation without replacement saving $ 1.0 MM.

* Revised corporate engineering standards to bring them up to date including, FRP composite construction, Coatings and Linings as well as revision of welding methodology specifications.

* Managed corrosion lab studies and interpreted compatibility parameters for R&D and field engineers.

* Crafted materials engineering specifications for sales organization.

Sr. Engineer Colgate Palmolive Co. November 1984 – November 2004

* New formulated super fatted soap dryers developed pitting corrosion after 3 years of service. A failure analysis and several plant inspections were conducted. Recommended higher throughput velocities and materials of construction upgrade from 316 SS to Al6XN saving $ 2 MM.

* Spray detergent towers around the globe were experiencing pernicious internal corrosion Made several trips to South America to internally inspect the towers. The towers were experiencing condensation corrosion at the explosion door level mid way up. Made recommendations to shore up tower with new internal fillet welded carbon steel plate and additional insulation to prevent continued condensation corrosion saving over $ 5 MM worldwide.

* Inspection of Glycerin recovery evaporators in Brazil revealed stress corrosion cracking after 5 years of service requiring a change in material of construction. Recommendation was made to change metallurgy to 2205 duplex alloy. The evaporators were repaired with this alloy with no further corrosion issues around the globe saving $ 7 MM

* High Speed Rotary valves in abrasive toothpaste formulas were experiencing erosion pitting corrosion around the world. Made recommendation to machine new valve out of Nitronic 60 alloy. This resolved the erosion issue and eliminated the chance for metal contamination in toothpaste saving $ 2 MM worldwide.

* Resolved a Dual laminate FRP tank failed in hypochlorite service in Europe. Moved away from lined FRP to cross-linked HDPE saving $ 1 MM.

* Led a global team of packaging engineers and scientists in resolving critical Soft-soap Pump Springs crevice corrosion by testing and reformulation eliminating the issue with a worldwide saving to the business of $ 10 MM.

* Developed an eight-hour informative Corrosion course on engineering materials and chemistry. An overview of significant company corrosion issues and solutions was given. It included sections on materials selection, engineering design, corrosion testing and a how to checklist for plant corrosion inspections.

* Developed a Materials Engineering corrosion database that was used extensively by engineers and the manufacturing plants to select materials of construction for Colgate Palmolive co. saving $ 5 MM worldwide.

FMC- Metallurgical Corrosion Engineer 1981-1984

Failure analysis of machine parts and corrosion studies for FMC that included fractography, metalography, and corrosion testing. Work centered on aluminum alloy selection for the Army fighting vehicles including the Bradley.

EDUCATION/PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan. BS Material Science& Engineering, Chemistry Minor. Completed numerous ASM and NACE professional development courses. Completed UCLA extension course on Electrochemistry and uses for corrosion testing. Failure Analysis courses were taken and completed through the Society of Professional Advancement. Participated in NACE annual corrosion society meetings and section meetings for over 25 years while obtaining all NACE certifications.
