Drilling Engineer, Expert I, at Hassi Messaoud, Algeria. Worked on studies to improve drilling efficiency and reduce costs of drilling, including all Engineering and Operational aspects. Most wells are >4000 m horizontals with >3000 m TVD, requiring mud densities over 2.0 s.g.


WAHA OIL COMPANY                        Mar. 2000 to July 2001

Staff Drilling Engineer: in Libya. Part Wellsite Drilling Supervisor on 17,100 ft. exploratory well in the desert, part Drilling Engineer in the Tripoli office, writing programs for exploratory and horizontal wells, as well as providing technical and operational support on ongoing drilling wells and workovers.


FRONTIER ENGINEERING                    Nov. 1998 to Jan. 2000

Wellsite Drilling Supervisor (June 1999 to Jan. 2000) for: Canadian Natural Resources in north-central Alberta on shallow, long-reach, horizontal drilling in a heavy oil zone; Cometra Energy in Alberta and B.C. on 700 - 2100 m wells; for Petromet Resources on a 3110 m foothills well; Real Resources in eastern Alberta on 8 directional holes to 1100 m from 18 – 50 deg. hole angle.
Wellsite Drilling Supervisor (Nov./Dec. 1998) for Conoco Canada in the foothills region of west-central Alberta. Deviation problems were severe, due to up to 40° formation dip, from spud. The pay zone (gas) at 2500 m was drilled with nitrogen through a snubbing system. Liner and completion were also snubbed in.


NORTH AEGEAN PETROLEUM COMPANY            Mar. to Sept. 1998

Drilling Engineer/Superintendent: in Kavala, Greece, preparing cost estimates, drilling programs and AFEs, negotiating service, materials and drilling contracts and expediting same and overseeing preparation of equipment and materials for a 2 to 3 well offshore, exploration drilling project. All wells were drilled using a mudline suspension system. Drilling superintendent duties began with the arrival of the jack-up drilling rig on Aug. 2, 1998.


GRACE, SHURSEN & MOORE, INC.                Nov. 1997 to Feb. 1998

Wellsite Drilling Supervisor: in Pakistan for Mari Gas Company on a 12,800' well requiring two intermediate casing strings. Long intervals of gumbo clays and plastic marls required a KCl, inhibitive, weighted mud.


BURNISH ENTERPRISES LTD.                    Oct. 1996 to Nov. 1997

Sand Control Specialist: directed technical, in-house project for CS Resources to solve sand control problems in their heavy oil SAGD projects (horizontal wells), including specialized lab testing.
Wellsite Drilling Supervisor: in western Canada for Cdn. Natural Resources, Cometra Energy, and CS Resources, including single leg and multi-lateral horizontal drilling.


GRACE, SHURSEN & MOORE, INC.                    Sept. 90 to July 96

Workover & Drilling Superintendent: Monitoring/directing difficult workover operations for North Aegean Petro. Co. on two oil platforms, offshore Kavala, Greece. Problems on all wells included 60% H2S, up to 1800 kg/m3 formation pressures, asphaltic deposition, severe corrosion, dual string completions, and multiple fishing and milling jobs. Operations included coiled tubing cleanouts (including with slimhole motors), directional drilling, liner cementing, running tieback strings, chemically and explosively cutting tubing, xylene and acid stimulations, perforating, servicing downhole safety valves, and production logging. All fishing tools were operator-owned and all fishing operations were directed by the Superintendent. Also, directed the drilling of 6 wells with a jackup rig, including one off-platform exploration well and a long-reach horizontal well with 3000 m displacement.


FRONTIER ENGINEERING & CONSULTING LTD.        Aug. 1989 to Aug. 1990

Drilling Engineering Specialist: Consultant to Petro Canada International Assistance Corporation (PCIAC) on a Canadian Technology Exchange Project in Kenya, Africa. Trained 3 Assistant Drilling Engineers in the areas of Drlg Eng'g and Operations on a Kenya Power Co. geothermal drilling project near Naivasha, Kenya. This included continuous lost circulation; air, foam and aerated water drilling; and associated casing cementing problems with massive lost circulation. Simultaneously, I was advisor to the Senior Drlg Engr and the PCIAC, on-site, Drilling Supervisors, on technical and operational drilling problems.


ALBERTA ENERGY COMPANY                    Nov. 1988 to July 1989

Staff Drlg. Engineer: As a result of a corporate take-over of Chieftain Development, was transferred to Calgary, working in all aspects of Drilling Engineering.


CHIEFTAIN DEVELOPMENT CO. LTD.            July 1987 to Nov. 1988

Drilling Manager: One person drilling department in charge of all aspects of Drilling Engineering and Operations except for lease construction. Prepared all cost estimates, AFE's, well licence applications (including Emergency Response Plans on sour wells), and detailed drilling programs. Chose all services, drilling rigs, contracts and wellsite consultants. Monitored and advised on all daily drilling operations as Drilling Superintendent. Purchased all wellsite materials. Looked after the drilling of 44 wells ranging in depth from 500-3600 m in northern and western areas of Alberta. Drilled, in record time, 35% of all wells over 1200 m deep (6 out of 17 wells).


BURNISH ENTERPRISES LTD.                    Nov. 1980 to July 1987

Office Engineering: Programming and coordinating of drilling projects for APL Oil & Gas, Frontier Engineering, Canterra Energy, Atlas Yellowknife, Atlantis Resources, Gane Energy and Saskoil Resources.
Wellsite Supervisor: Supervision in drilling (straight and directional) and completions on wells throughout Alberta for APL Oil & Gas, Erskine Resources, Canada Northwest Energy, Frontier Engineering, Barlon Engineering, Esso Resources, Sienna Resources, Atlas Yellowknife, DeKalb Petroleum, Atlantis Resources, Ladd Exploration and Saskoil.
Project Engineer, Turbodrilling (Aug. 1981 to Dec. 1982): Co-ordination, supervision and repairs on Soviet-built turbodrills used in a research testing program by a consortium of Canadian oil and service companies. This included liaison with a group of Soviet engineering advisors, on site in Canada. I was also involved in three technical/business trips to Moscow, one without an interpreter.
Consulting Engineer, Drlg & Completions (Feb. 1981 to July 1981): Doing drilling and completion programming, wellsite supervision, cost estimating, cement testing, casing and cement design, drill stem testing and material expediting on 14,200' wildcat well (50% office engineer/superintendent and 50% senior wellsite supervisor).


PETRO-DRIL INTERNATIONAL LTD.                July to Oct. 1980

Vice-President of Engineering: Responsible for implementation of safety and training programs. Involved in rig design of two National 370 diesel/electric rigs.


DOME PETROLEUM LTD.                    Feb. 1973 to July 1980

Manager of Drilling Engineering (April 1979 to July 1980): In charge of 16 engineers and technologists responsible for drilling engineering of all of Dome's land operations. This involved 45 drilling rigs. This group did drilling programming, AFE cost estimating and daily monitoring of drilling operations.
Manager of Drilling Technology (May 1977 to April 1979): Some of my projects were:
    (a) Developed the technique of using weighted mud to prevent and control sloughing shale in foothills wells. Published article in World Oil, April 1978 entitled "Weighting Fresh Water Muds Stabilizes Pressured Shales".
    (b) Developed a computer program, SLKAUTO, for the procedure to land tubing in permanent packers.
    (c) Spent summer of 1977 as wellsite drilling engineer on one of Dome's drill ships in the Beaufort Sea (Arctic Ocean). Overpressure problems forced us to have a mud weight of 17.8 lb./gal. at 9450 ft.
    (d) Specialization in mud rheology, solids control and primary cementing.
    (e) Was engineer in charge of drilling and completing the deepest well ever drilled by Dome Petroleum (4500m) near Obed, Alberta.
    (f) Programmed and supervised the changing of 7" tubing into a live underground propane storage cavern without snubbing equipment.
    (g) Consultant and troubleshooter to the Drilling Department on complex and difficult drilling or completion problems.
    (h) Spent one month in the Soviet Union as on site Drilling Engineer on a well in the permafrost region of the Soviet Arctic (including one week as interpreter).
Drilling Engineer (Sept. 1974 - May 1977): The responsibilities there included programming and wellsite supervision of drilling, completions and workovers in most gas areas of Alberta; about 30% field work. Contingent with these responsibilities I did all of Dome's drilling cost estimates for a one-year period.
Reservoir Engineer (Feb. 1973 - Sept. 1974): Responsibilities included reservoir analysis, company property appraisals, reservoir model studies and pressure build-up surveys. Both office calculations and field supervision were carried out by me on the build-up surveys. The results of one reservoir modeling study were the basis for a 100 well development drilling program.
