RELEVANT PERSONAL SKILLS

Adaptability
I adapted well to the change of environment when I started university four years ago. I decided I wanted to attend a university that was a sizeable distance away from home so that I could broaden my horizons as it has given me the opportunity to meet and socialise with people from many different backgrounds.

Being in the 'low man' position in my current role at GRM has meant having to be very adaptable. At very short notice I could find myself having to go out to a site to undertake a site walkover study or some trial pitting. Sites can be anywhere within a one hundred mile radius of the office so a degree of flexibility is required.

Analytical skills
I have always had a good level of numeracy and my course at the University of Portsmouth has allowed me to develop my analytical skills in a variety of projects requiring the statistical analysis of data. One such time was in semester one of my final year when I completed a unit on risk analysis and assessment. Part of the unit involved an appraisal of probability models for landslide hazard mapping which involved assessing different models used throughout the world in determining landslide prone areas based on fieldwork data collection and analysis.

Communication skills
My communication skills both written and verbal are excellent. My current position requires me to liase with clients on a daily basis to keep them up to date with progress at their respective sites. I also communicate a great deal with sub-contractors such as drillers, arboriculturalists, asbestos specialists, underground and above tank removal specialists and various laboratories to arrange geotechnical and contamination testing of soil samples.

Geoscience skills
My course at the University of Portsmouth has provided me with a thorough grounding in many geoscience disciplines as it has a strong emphasis on developing my future professional skills. I have completed core units including geotechnics, rock mechanics, structural geology, engineering stratigraphy, hydrogeology, geoscience data analysis and modelling, spatial data acquisition and analysis (GIS and Remote Sensing), risk analysis and assessment and seismology.

In September 2004 I conducted the data collection part of my dissertation, titled "Hazard assessment for a new road proposal along a section of the Inferior Oolite escarpment, Northamptonshire". This involved working on my own ensuring that I kept to work deadlines as I had 28 days to collect all the information needed to be interpreted into a written report which was done in my final year of study.

* Fellow of the Geological Society of London.
* I enjoy off-roading in 4x4s and hope to pursue this interest much more now I have graduated.
* I am interested in aviation and hope to take a course so I can gain my Private Pilot's Licence after I graduate.
* I enjoy keeping fit, particularly swimming and cycling.

OTHER SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

* At White Young Green I was involved in projects such as the installation of drainage layers, including gravel and geotextile liners. I have worked on projects from the installation of gas wells on landfill sites to engineered clay liners, side-wall seals, permanent clay and plastic capping works and temporary capping works. I have also used a Nuclear Density Gauge (NDG) to measure moisture content along with dry and wet density of engineered clay barriers.
* Computer literate – as well as previous listed IT skills, I have RSA word and text processing certificates at level 3 and experience in using Microsoft Excel and Powerpoint.
* Clean driving licence.
