DETAILED DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES ON EACH SHIP & RESPECTIVE COMPANIES: -

As a Radio Officer, I had carried out the job of Communications Officer, Purser, Provision Master, Chief Housekeeper - all rolled into one. Additionally, I helped out Captain & Chief Engineer in their daily & monthly paper works.

As Communications Officer with The Shipping Corporation of India Ltd, I had to carry out

- the daily communications needs of the ship by operating the GMDSS equipments at the order of the master,

- repair & maintenance of all electronic & electrical Bridge equipments,

- keeping communications station & Bridge equipments in perfectly working conditions for surveys including Port State Control.

As a Purser,

- I had to undertake liasing with the ship's agents at different ports, on master's advice, for Customs & Immigration Clearance of the ship,

- going thoroughly with the crew for abiding by the STCW 1995 regulations,

- updating individual crew members for their respective STCW 1995 courses,

- crew monthly payrolls,

- crew monthly allotment to their respective bank accounts,

- crew sign on / sign off & their eventual repatriation back to home.

Additionally, I worked as a Provision Master where

- I had to prepare the monthly budget for provisions in consultation with the Master. In different ports, I had to meet the ship chandlers, for provision supplies,

- I had personally undertaken the cleanliness of the provision areas, fridge rooms & report to Chief Engineer in case of mechanical defects.

Lastly, as a Housekeeper

- I had to personally look into the overall cleanliness & house-keeping of the accommodation area of the ship.

After leaving The Shipping Corporation of India Limited, I decided to join the Cruise shipping industry. Finally, I had a chance to work with one of them as I joined Sun Cruises, a part of MyTravel group, UK in the capacity of Communications Purser. I had worked on three of their Cruise ships - Carousel, Sunbird & Sundream.

As Communications Purser with Suncruises, I was responsible for the following: -

Direct reporting responsibility to the Master, particularly in respect of statutory requirements for confidentiality of communications

- Ensuring that watch keeping routines are in compliance with the Master's instruction

- Responsible for the communication room and communication traffic operation of phone calls, faxes, data files on behalf of the company, passengers and crew.

- Responsible for the tidiness in the communication room including ensuring that all equipment is fully operational

- Responsible for accounting requirements for crew communication

- Preventing defrauding of the Company by restricting unauthorised use of communications systems

- Ensuring confidentiality by enforcing the Communications Room as a "Restricted Access Area"

- Responsible for his own full knowledge of operation of all GMDSS equipment on board, especially Distress and Safety procedures, and location principles and operation of SART and EPIRB

- To be ready to attend to any communication duties on the Bridge whenever required

- In addition to the listed responsibilities above, various office work was delegated by the Master, Staff Captain and Chief Engineer as required

Suncruises went bankrupt & I got an offer to join the Elysian Cruise Lines, Miami to work as
Radio-Officer cum Crew Purser on M/V Bolero. Later, I had to additionally take over the job of
Finance Officer on M/V Bolero, which was going through extensive dry docking & refurbishment at Gibraltar.

As Finance Officer with Elysian Cruise Lines, I had to

- train Crew Purser with the daily jobs regarding the crew matters like crew monthly payrolls, crew sign on / sign off & their eventual repatriation back to home, STCW 1995 certifications for crew,

- checking of monthly crew salary accounts of Crew Purser,

- paying off crew salary through Crew Purser,

- paying off ship chandlers against provision supply,

- accounting & stock taking of provisions,

- maintain proper & transparent daily accounts of cash transactions.

As Electronics / Communications Officer with Norwegian Cruise Lines, I had to

- maintain & repair the ship's MTN satellite & Inmarsat communication system,

- maintain & repair ship's digital & analogue telephone central,

- maintain & repair ship's pager, PA, TV, UHF system,

- trouble shooting of ship's wireless Internet & much more.

As Crew Personnel Executive with K-LINE, SINGAPORE, I had 5 ships - one tanker, five containers - under my belt. I had to

- check their monthly accounts for wages & provisions,

- liaison & keep track with K-Line, Mumbai office for monthly sign on & sign off of crew members & Officers,

- liaison & keep track with local agents regarding family joining or family repatriation of Officers,

- check with final wages bill for deductions of costs encountered for family joining or family repatriation of Officers & their victualling costs &

- prepare & update Officer's sign-on & sign-off matrix in consultation with K-Line, Mumbai office.

Additionally, I interacted with the Technical Division of K-Line Singapore, through which I have working knowledge about receiving requisitions from ships, taking quotations from three or more suppliers & finally ordering for the same.

As Communications Officer with Hansa Shipping Gmbh, I had to

- maintain the ship's Inmarsat communication system & other Bridge navigational equipments,

- maintain ship's digital telephone central

- maintain ship's computer servers, computer networks & satellite TV system &,

- putting up passenger embarkation stations & additionally helping Purser for guest's check-in.

As Communications Officer with V Ships Monaco, I had to

- maintain the ship's Inmarsat communication system & all Bridge navigational equipments,

- maintain ship's computer servers including ASI.

As HEAD HUNTER with Fleet Management, Kolkata office, I have to

- liaise with Mumbai office in controlling Human Resource for more than 200 ships,

- inducting new both deck & engine officers for the expanding fleet,

- preparing of Officer's Data of respective candidates for approval,

- initial accustomising new candidates with company policies & regulations,

- initial filtering / interview of suitable candidates,

- preparing of initial joining papers including different visas,online company courses and,

- final preparing of enjoined candidate's file system at Kolkata & Mumbai office.

While working with Fleet Management, I got an offer to head the Kolkata office of Damicoship India Pvt Ltd, as Fleet Personnel Manager.As FLEET PERSONNEL MANAGER with Damicoship India Pvt Ltd (Ship Owners), Kolkata office, I had to: -

- look after medicals, visas, passport renewals, STCW certificate upgradation of ex-hands,

- hunting of new hands for the expanding fleet in consultation with Mumbai office,

- interview of new candidates,

- pre-joining briefing of company policies & regulations,

- preparing office budget,

- full office administration,

- keep track of expenses incurred towards medicals & travel expenses etc.

But alas all my good works with Damicoship went down the drain as they went on a cost cutting measure & planning to shut down their Kolkata office!!!!!!!
