WORK EXPERIENCE

Rio Tinto Zimbabwe – Empress Nickel Refinery
Process Metallurgist (Sept 2006 – Jan 2008)

I was promoted from my position as a Junior Metallurgist to a Process Metallurgist responsible for the refinery section in September 2006. My duties were; planning, coordinating and controlling metallurgical process activities at the nickel and copper refinery including:
(i) Daily, monthly, quarterly and yearly metallurgical accounting on the hydrometallurgical and pyro-metallurgical plant,
(ii) Carryout projects and test-works to continually improve plant operations,
(iii) Develop of PFD's and PID's, sizing of pipelines, valves and equipment for new and renovated section of the plant,
(iv) Preparing plant models for plant control purposes and assisting in the development of process optimization techniques,
(v) Trouble shooting on operational issues and coming up with detailed action plans, executing and implementing production forecasts and targets, operational and metallurgical standards,
(vi) Ensuring that set production targets and process efficiencies are met,
(vii) Ensuring compliance with all safety, health and environmental legislations and standards.
Accomplishments
(i) Consistently achieved leaching efficiencies above 85% as leach metallurgist.
(ii) Was involved in successful projects including; upgrade of smelter gas handling system, use of plate heat exchangers at ENR, cobalt precipitation tanks replacement, improving PGM concentrates grade and optimisation of oxygen usage in the leach plant.
(iii) Leading a team that championed ISO 9001 certification at Empress Nickel Refinery.
(iv) Optimisation of the milling circuit with emphasis on milling throughput and power optimisation

Junior Metallurgist (July 2005 – Aug 2006)

During my tenure as a junior metallurgist I managed the metallurgical functions of the milling section, leach, cobalt plant, PGM plant, smelter section and the tankhouse. The functions of this position were;
(i) Carrying out metallurgical testworks in an effort to improve leach efficiencies and lower reagent consumption.
(ii) Process optimisation and plant troubleshooting
(iii) Identification of Process Improvements and execution of the improvements on plant scale
(iv) Develop conceptual Process Flow Diagrams for treatment of plant residues, tankhouse sludge and smelter skulls based on pilot scale testwork.
(v) Conducting sampling campaigns on the plant to evaluate performance and for process control purposes in accordance with detailed feasibility studies
Accomplishments
(i) Successfully developed conceptual Process Flow Diagrams for treatment of plant residues, tankhouse sludge and smelter skulls based on pilot scale testwork
(ii) Did testworks on possible filtration bags for the tankhouse and successfully proposed a better and effective filtration bag which improved nickel plating by 10%.
Learner Process Metallurgist (Aug 2003 – Aug 2004)
After learning all the refinery plant sections in detail (leaching plant, milling section, cobalt removal plant, PGM leach plant, tankhouse, smelter, boilers and the water treatment plant), I resumed the following duties;
(i) Carryout projects and test works to continually improve plant operations
(ii) Carry out metallurgical accounting for individual plant unit processes
(iii) Design and implement lab and pilot scale testwork to continually improve plant operations
(iv) Evaluate recommended filtration products for improved separation efficiency.
Accomplishments
(i) Achieved a distinction (class 1) for my industrial attachment year as a result of my contributions to the operations at the nickel and copper refinery.
(ii) Due to the good performance during my attachment, I was offered an opportunity to pursue my further graduate training at Empress Nickel Refinery soon after finishing my studies

EDUCATION
1. MSc in Chemical Engineering
(Crystallisation and Precipitation Unit, University of Cape Town - Feb 2008 to Date)
(i) Undertook a full time research in a project entitled Continous Precipitation of Selenium and Tellurium using the Replication Model System
(ii) Made an oral presentation at the South Aafrican Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM) in August 2008 on the topic entitled Precipitation of selenium from acidic copper sulphate solutions using sodium sulphate.
(iii) Published an abstract entitled Precipitation of selenium from acidic copper sulphate solutions using sodium sulphate in the Mineral Processing Journal 2008.
(iv) Also working as a Teaching Assistant (Tutor) in the Chemical Engineering Department and Mathematics Department at the University of Cape Town.
2. Bachelor of Engineering Honours Degree in Chemical Engineering
Offered by the National University of Science and Technology, Zimbabwe (August 2000 – July 2005)
(i) Design Project: Design of a plant to produce 156 000 tones of chlorine per annum through the electrolysis of brine
