Personal Statement

I am a practical person with wide knowledge and experience in the engineering and earth science disciplines. I trained as a heavy automotive diesel engineer after leaving school. This was followed by 25 years experience in the management and ownership of large livestock and forestry farming properties in New Zealand.

In 1994 I decided to re-train in the Earth Sciences by attending university as a part-time student. This resulted in my BSc in 1999 and a MSc in 2003. My study and research concentrated on sedimentary and engineering geology. In 2001 I started my own consultancy as a geologist concentrating on the geotechnical characteristics of building sites and applying the necessary engineering standards. I am also involved in a family marine engineering project with a colleague and my two sons: www.floatainer.co.nz.

In June 2006 I undertook a 10-month contract with the International Committee of Red Cross managing the water and habitat team in Lofa County, Liberia. This entailed overseeing a team of 8 field staff and 40 contract staff. In that time we provided water and sanitation faculties for 10,000 beneficiaries. I have had acknowledgement from several supervisors as being particularly adept at organising and mobilising indigenous peoples in a cordial and effective manner.

My duties in Liberia necessitated travel throughout the Lofa County where I took a personal interest in the regional geology. I undertook exploration geology activities within my free time and identified a mineralised zone which justifies further study.

In 2007 I undertook a further 12-month contract with ICRC in Darfur, Sudan

This mix of experience allows me to offer my services in in a wide range of geological and engineering based projects. I have strong report writing and business development capabilities. Examples of my work are available to prospective employers. My capabilities are particularly applicable to basic project investigation and development in poor third-world countries.
