4. Working Life Employment

ľ Executive Director: Umvuzo (Energy Pty-Ltd)
07/2007 - Current
Duties & Responsibilities:
I am currently an Executive Director and a Shareholder in an Energy Consortium formed specifically to source and supply scarce energy resources. These include petroleum products, Gas, Coal, Solar, Wind, Nuclear and other alternative energy.
The company has partnered with government and other major local and international players in the energy sector.
Reason for leaving
As a shareholder I have informed the Board of my wish to be a Non Executive Director and continue to serve fulltime in the security environment where I know my skills are required. I am therefore immediately available to pursue a fulltime employment within the security environment.
ľ Head of Security: Africa and Middle East (Nokia Siemens Networks)
06/2007 - 05/2008
R615, 000.00 Per Annum Cost To Company.
This was a Permanent executive level position at Nokia Siemens Networks in Johannesburg, South Africa (Gauteng). Benefits: M/A, Pension, Car Allowance, Housing allowance, Phone allowance.
Duties & Responsibilities:
I was tasked with protecting all Nokia Siemens Networks employees in Africa and Middle East, and also ensuring the safety of about 15 000 contractors doing NSN installations in dangerous isolated areas all over Africa and Middle East. I had to introduce security tools and solutions to maximise compliance and conformity to such. I normally looked after 12 countries but would always be the first one to be deployed in any country in the world where the company felt unsafe. As a Head of Security: Africa & Middle East I looked after South Africa, Mozambique, Botswana, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, DRC Congo, Kenya, Ethiopia, Seychelles, Mauritius, Angola, Beirut and Afghanistan. I was also deployed in Beirut during 2007 Israel invasion and had also spent time in Afghanistan during Taliban and Western world confrontations. During these periods I successfully evacuated more than 5000 employees and protected all our assets in both countries.

Nokia Siemens Networks as a new company relied on a number of executives to come with strategies to help build this telecommunication network giant.
Mine was to draft strategic protection policies, drive these policies and strategies in both board meetings and across the company floors. Creating systems and enforcing policy and monitor compliance.
I was also tasked with building the protection strategy, not only for Africa but for the entire Nokia group. Running with a budget of $50 Million I had to ensure that all systems were up and running. As head of Protection Services I was also head of Facility Management for all Africa operations.
I liaised with all heads of security, intelligence, police, emergency services and embassy officials not only in Africa but across the world especially in unstable areas like Beirut, DRC Congo and Afghanistan where Nokia Siemens Networks had serious interests. As part of my duties I have evacuated more than 5 000 employees in different parts of Africa during political instability. I have also made use of a number of emergency companies in Africa and Middle East and also shared experience with other experienced protection experts from all over the world. I have also gained massive facility management skills from various countries across the globe. This has further made me a very balanced senior manager, armed not only with extensive management skills but with unmatched security, protection and intelligence experience that is barely unmatched.
Due to my international exposure I rate myself as one of the very few all rounder security and protection expert that have physically operated in serious war zone and kept the company afloat against all odds.
Reason for leaving
I left full time employment to be on the side of my dying mother who has since passed on.
ľ Director: Protection Services (Department of Health: SA Government)
05/2006 - 05/2007
R540, 000.00 Per Annum Cost To Company.
This was a permanent executive level position at Department of Health in Government, Johannesburg, South Africa (Gauteng). Benefits: M/A, Pension, Car Allowance, Housing allowance, Phone allowance.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Looking after 43 000 employees, protecting 2000 000 patients that visited our institutions monthly, protecting 22 000 contractors that work in our buildings. Apart from offering the above services I also advised the MEC and the Director General on all new and potential threats and prepared and drilled them on best response.

I drafted and corrected protection policies and plans. Established systems to monitor compliance and correct wrong behaviour. I worked with National Intelligence Agency, Secret Service &SAPS in a number of security operations. As the head of Emergency Services I also had to liaise with all Metro Heads, JOC and other event management stakeholders during big international events.

The government had limited budget but I had to control and measure the performance of all private contractors and advised accordingly. I advised on all protection matters and was responsible for standards and specifications for our emergency services.
During my stay in government I set up the required crisis management and protection structure and introduced a working protection discipline that never existed in the department before.
It should be noted that as a security expert I also formed security structures, created security audit tools and wrote security standards and policies for both the MEC and the National Minister of Health.
Reason for leaving
This was a deployment and arrangement between different government structures, mine was to set up the structure and put relevant tools in place.

ľ Senior Advisor: Intelligence (Eskom)
07/2005 - 04/2006

I worked with the intelligence agencies across the world in terms getting first hand information and protect the company against competition, information vendors, spy networks, terrorist activities and any other adversaries.

My environment dealt with collecting, analyzing and using available information to make wiser decision in formulating strategies to counter these activities. Aligning the collected information I had to make sure that our Crisis Management team was briefed and action ready to deal with expected incidents. I was also advising and training our Security Department, Fire Fighting, Aviation Unit, VIP Protection, Cable Theft Unit and Internal Audit.

The countries involved were SA, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Swaziland, Lesotho, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, Angola, DRC and Nigeria.

My other function was to conduct all the investigations into matters that affected our day today running of BP business in Africa. The investigations ranged from theft matters, corruption within BP and outside including local govt. officials, bribe, breach of company ethics, terrorism and manipulation of our accounting systems etc.
All these investigations were sensitive in terms of monetary value and also because they usually involved Senior Personnel in foreign Government structures.

I had 14 managers in Africa reporting to me, and I discussed monthly stats with all country MDs every month.
Above all I was in charge of advising the BP President and the senior team on all protection matters. I worked closely with the SAPS, National Intelligence, South African Secret Service, FBI and US Secret Service on issues of common security interests and also worked with heads of Metro Emergency Services in all towns in countries where BP had interests in. I also liaised a lot with SA military Attaches in the rest of Africa.

My unit really shaped BP and contributed to what BP is today. All the senior planning was developed around my team's intelligence collection. I designed protection standards and led the incident response team of Fire Fighters, Medical Services, Aviation Unit, and Crisis Management all over Africa. As head of crisis team I also led evacuated hundreds when the company had crisis in Kenya.
Reason for leaving
I had to relocate to Johannesburg to be close to my extremely ill mother.

ľ Risk & Fraud Manager (First National Bank)

R325, 000.00 Per Annum Cost To Company:
Permanent management level position at First National Bank Corporate in the financial sector in Johannesburg, South Africa (Gauteng). Benefits: Medical Aid, Car Allowance, Pension, Entertainment all, Phone all, Travel allowance.
Duties & Responsibilities
I solely set up the First National Bank (Corporate) Investigation Unit. This unit was responsible for investigation of all fraud and intelligence collection. The Unit was then known as CSIU (Corporate Special Intelligence Unit) and worked closely with the Intelligence unit of the country. Due to legislative directives this unit changed names to Fraud Unit and very late to Operational Risk Management. This unit was responsible for tracing all offenders anywhere in South Africa, arrest them and bring them over to Johannesburg to face trial. As the head of the unit I was responsible for collecting intelligence through various means and manage to stop any illegal activities before they occurred.
I was basically responsible for looking and managing all risk that affected First National Bank Nationally. The bulk of my work included helping the ff department: Custodial Services (shares & stocks division), Electronic Banking, Card acquiring, Corporate Account Services & Finance Dept. The work was about reducing all risks that could affect the normal day to day running of these strategic areas within FNB. Apart from these responsibilities I was also involved in Business Competitive Intelligence which dealt more with studying the latest business trends and strategies, understand the competition and come with strategy that will give this bank a cutting edge against competition while safeguarding the bank's own trading secrets.

I was in charge of all fraud investigations and I was also involved in helping all our corporate clients who had fraudulent activities on their FNB accounts. I spent most of my time running the Fraud Awareness Programme and doing fraud & criminal presentations to all our national clients. These preventative measures really helped the bank to cut down on a number of financial losses which were due to fraudulent activities. I physically arrested and had a great number of prosecutions and in the process saved the bank millions and also recovered a lot of money.

On a management side I learnt a lot from interacting with Financial Directors, CEOs and MDs of big businesses. This is the era where I really developed my management skills and this really prepared me for leading the winning teams, which I came to do best in years to come.
Reason for leaving
Eager to experience the international arena and BP offered such opportunity.
