PROFILE
A Geology graduate with experience of research and development within an international company, developing projects from the initial concept, through the design stages to delivery of an innovative solution to the customer. Strong interests in the areas of environmental geoscience, remote sensing, and the analytical techniques applied within these fields.

KEY SKILLS
- Communication My strong communication and interpersonal skills developed through both giving presentations and contributing in meetings, whilst working at an optical manufacturing company in Switzerland during my gap year before University. My public speaking skills were further improved through presentations and participating in seminars at University.
- Self- Motivation I am a highly motivated and confident person, demonstrated by my ability to work on my own, developing projects and compiling research information whilst working during my gap year. Travelling abroad required me to be independent and well organised from which I gained both maturity and confidence. My final year geological mapping project required me to work alone in the field for six weeks, in which organisation and resourcefulness were essential for the success of the project.
- Teamwork A wide range of work experience working in teams of different sizes and in different contexts has strengthened my ability to communicate effectively and work efficiently within a team.
WORK EXPERIENCE
1999 – 2000 Leica Microsystems Ltd, Heerbrugg, Switzerland
- This position was a one year contract during my gap year between college and University. My role was a Research Assistant working in the Test Laboratory, and also involved additional duties as an assistant to the I.T. Department Manager.
- The position involved testing prototype microscopes and solving design and technical faults through detailed research. My foremost project included monitoring and finding a solution to dust control in surgical operating microscopes. Additional responsibilities included writing evaluation reports, and the analysis of technical data and budget information.
- The role required me to speak and write German to a good conversational standard, through oral communication on a daily basis, to taking part in meetings and giving presentations.
2001 – 2005 Various Commercial Employment
- This was temporary employment carried out as a student during and also between University terms, and most recently as a Graduate, allowing me to gain invaluable work experience and requiring me to successfully adapt to different roles at short notice.
- Some of my various roles included a Library Assistant at the University of Leicester library, a Customer Services Officer at the Royal Bank of Scotland, an Assistant Recruitment Consultant, a Visitor Services Officer in the Tourism department of the local city council and various administrative roles within the Social Services department.
- Within these roles, I was required to work as part of a team, as well as independently of others, use my initiative to solve problems, record and manipulate statistical data, and assist the public with their queries in a resourceful and professional manner.
1997 – 1999 Halfords Ltd, Wakefield
- This position was as a part-time cashier and general assistant working in a busy car maintenance and bicycle shop at weekends, during my time at college.
- The role required me to use a cash register and computer, dealing with customer payments and garage invoices. I was also responsible for the training of new employees.
SKILLS AND OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
- Computing I have passed my RSA Computer Literacy and Information Technology Stage 1 examination, and I am proficient in use of Microsoft Office, including word processing and software packages such as Microsoft Word and Excel. I also have a working knowledge of Lotus applications.
- Languages I am able to speak and write German to a good conversational standard through completion of a one year intensive language course whilst I was employed in Switzerland. This tested my skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing in German, and I can also speak French to a basic conversational standard.
- Driving Licence I hold a full, clean driving licence.
POSITIONS OF RESPONSIBILITY
During my time at University, I was actively involved as a student mentor, providing advice of an academic and personal nature to a group of younger Geology students. I acted as a liaison between students and staff, which required me to organise meetings and to also use my initiative and communication skills.
ACTIVITIES AND INTERESTS
I am a keen sportswoman, and actively train at the gym three times a week. I enjoy swimming and athletics for fitness. I am also an avid traveller, visiting much of Europe during my gap year in Switzerland. This experience helped develop my skills in several languages, including German, French and Spanish, and also allowed me to develop both confidence and maturity.
