Social Leader as part of a specialist group to developing an ESHIA training programme for HSEC Managers for an international oil and gas company, to be rolled out globally to 40+ sites/ regions.
Social Leader for an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) on the Legacy Re-mining Areas for BHP Billiton/Alcoa, comprising 13 sites in Marowijne, Suriname. The assessment and consultation is being conducted in line with IFC and BHP Billiton standards in the absence of national regulations. Tasks include the development and execution of the PCDP, field investigations, management of local personnel, data analysis and report writing. Due to the complexities of traditional Maroon culture and community vulnerability, emphasis is being given to tailoring the consultation programme to ensure full stakeholder participation.

Previous Experience: Impact Assessment & Consultation
Consultation and community specialist for closure planning to prefeasibility and feasibility level for BHP Billiton/Suralco for bauxite operations and refinery in Suriname, comprising nine different areas of operation/ former operation. The project involved an assessment of community sustainability in four districts, land use objectives and options as part of an intensive programme of consultation over 6 months from high National Assembly members to local groups and individuals. The consultation programme helped to inform closure and community development options and was undertaken in conjunction with local specialists in urban, peri-urban and rural environments. Many vulnerable groups were identified and the project succeeded in engaging isolated and marginalised communities.
Social Team Leader for an ESIA due diligence review for the high profile Rosia Montana gold development in Romania against Equator principles, IFC, EU and Romanian standards. Responsibility for reviewing baseline and impact assessment, stakeholder engagement and supporting plans e.g. RRAP, PCDP, ESMP etc. for this complex project.

Tasks included the development of management strategy to minimise risk, consisting baseline assessment, community profiling of socio-economic conditions, institutional and organisational capacities, identification of key players, etc, and a community development strategy to integrate local mining capabilities and opportunities, as well as building positive relationships with communities and authorities in the area.
Project Director for an economic infrastructure capacity assessment in the oil and gas sector in Qatar. The assessment included analysis of key sectors, supply bottlenecks and cumulative impacts in light of a proposed US$2 billion project investment by the client alongside other significant oil, gas, tourism and civil infrastructure projects scheduled to take place in country between 2005 and 2008. Sectoral and market analysis included, inter alia, macro and micro level assessment of transportation (roads and ports), raw materials (aggregates for construction and development), health and housing.

Project manager for a comparative assessment of socio-economic issues relevant to the uptake of new technology in artisanal small-scale gold mining operations in Guyana and Zimbabwe. This included an assessment of community and occupational health considerations such as HIV/Aids and malaria. The project was funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID), and was undertaken in conjunction with the British Geological Survey. Fieldwork included collating information based on social surveys of workers engaged in artisanal gold mining operations in difficult conditions.

Corporate Responsibility and Performance
Mining specialist as part of a team responsible for the development of an Options Study to develop Verification Guidelines for socio-economic and environmental issues/performance for the mining and metals industry on behalf of International Council of Mining and Metals (ICMM).
Team member to develop a set of guidance notes to support the implementation of BP's new Social Responsibility Framework.. Practical guidance developed specifically for CSR priorities.
Responsible for managing and coordinating the corporate environmental and social reporting for Billiton and latterly BHPBilliton plc Group in accordance with the GRI guidelines. Responsible for project management and writing of BHP Billiton plc's Health, Safety, Environment & Communities Annual Reports in 2000 and 2001 and bi-annual Customer Sector Group Reports. Developed and implemented the reporting system and corporate management standard on reporting, provided training to site personnel, internal assurance, CSR and environmental auditing of all site data and oversight of external verification. The first report, in 2000, culminated in the receipt of the KPMG SA Award for the Best HSEC Report. Related responsibilities included close liaison with corporate communications, development of effective internal and external communications networks and stakeholder feedback database and follow up communication, tracking of SD policy issues for the Billiton group.
Support to BHP Billiton to compile exploration risks from regions of operation to meet corporate reporting risk registry requirements. Comprehensive register included occupational and non-occupational health, environmental, social, ethical, human resource and legal risks and associated risk reduction, mitigation and control measures for exploration activities.

Programme Leader for a pan- European project 'Regeneration of European Sites and Cites and Urban Regeneration' to develop a systematic holistic approach to sustainable regeneration of European brownfield sites. By developing and leading best practice models for the management of buildings and infrastructure, the project provided practical transferable tools and recommendations for end users to support sustainable regeneration. This multidisciplinary project drew on the expertise of UK, French, German and Polish partners and was financed by the European Commission.
Responsible for integrating CSR/SD issues and services into the objectives of three government funded projects. Working with a cross section of SMEs in the industrial, mining, waste, consultancy and regeneration sectors in different areas of assisted economic evelopment status e.g. assistance and support tailored to the CSR/SD needs of a network of 1000+ SMEs in Wales through information, collaborative projects, surveys, training, partnership development, corporate CSR policy and reporting advice and implementation guidelines.
