University of Leicester/De Beers: Research Assistant
Dec. 2007-Dec. 2008 (1 year fixed term contract)
I am currently working on a joint year long contract for the University of Leicester and DTC )a De Beers Group Company). As part of the beneficiation of African countries and the restructuing of DTC and the De Beers group of companies I have been taken on to develop a new graduate certificate aimed at broadening the knowledge of the employees of these companies. My role includes research, material development such as PowerPoint lectures, audio and video presentations, graphic design for brochures and the course website. I have been trained by the DTC academies in areas I was previously unfamiliar and am now writing this material to a higher level after undertaking research and liasing with subject experts. The course is starting on 1st September this year and will run with a pilot cohort of 20. One of the biggest challenges in developing the material has been ensuring it is at an appropriate level of understanding to pass the graduate certificate criteria but also ensuring that all the material is accessible and understandable in countries ranging from the UK to South Africa, Namibia and Botswana.

MJCA: Geologist.

University of Leicester students union: Marketing and promotions for the union.

Reeds of Norwich: Membership only restaurant and bar.
During university holidays.
I was involved with waitressing and bar duties as well as design and customer service.

Fieldwork
I have completed over 120 days of fieldwork on a variety of projects, in England, Scotland, Wales, the European Alps and Tenerife. Fieldwork was aimed at developing a variety of skills which include, geological mapping, taking structural measurements, sampling, identifying lithologies and structures and producing geological and tectonostratigraphic histories. Each piece of fieldwork was used to produce a scientific report.

Organization, teaching, time management
* I undertook an eight week mapping project which enabled me to develop time management skills as the project involved literary research, fieldwork, laboratory work and the writing of a geological report. The project also helped develop my organizational qualities as for example travel had to be arranged to and from an island with no official transport links and accommodation had to be found (this was a farm on the island).

* Teaching climbing and kayaking and being on the staff student committee for the geology department has built on my interpersonal skills. Being able to make people feel at ease is especially important when teaching climbing and abseiling where people are often initially scared. Teaching encourages communication skills as you have to be able praise appropriately and be able to criticize without harming someone's enjoyment or confidence, and often have to address a group of mixed ages and abilities.

* The organization of a club and teaching has helped me gain managerial skills which are useful in the work place.

Problem solving, team work and communication
* Communication can be through a variety of means and throughout my degree course I developed a range of communicative skills. During a palaeobiology project a multitude of these skills where used, in teams of four we were given a selection of fossils and had to determine amongst other things palaeoecology and produce a project and presentation. Within the project we used excel, word, photographic and graphs as means of communicating our results, and for our presentation we used PowerPoint and included a 3D palaeoecology block diagram.

* As part of the University of Leicester Mountaineering Club committee I was able to build on my team working skills, problem solving, organizational skills and individual working skills. This was through a variety of situations, when I was social secretary for the club I arranged the first ever club ball which entailed me organizing a venue, food, seating and music for a group of 60, during the same time the committee worked together to arrange a special Christmas trip to the Lake District. During my time as training secretary the committee arranged 15 weekends away and I arranged for five club members to become trained single pitch leaders by the British Mountaineering Council at a reduced cost and site specific trained at the local climbing wall.

* During my time at MJCA I have worked on many projects and have had the opportunity to project manage. Working in a small company has further developed my ability to not only work well in a team but also to work alone in the field and in the office.

Non-academic Interests:
I go climbing and mountaineering regularly and was part of the University of Leicester Mountaineering Club committee for two years and a member for four years, during this time I gained my single pitch award training from the BMC.

Kayaking. I have gained my three star and taught for five years as part of the committee of a local club during my school years.

Photography. I enjoy both film and digital photography and specialize in macrophotography.
