Summary:

I worked as a Drilling Fluids Engineer 2 for MI Trinidad Limited in both Land and Offshore environments. Job details included running Water Based, Oil Based and Synthetic Drilling Fluids as well as Reservoir Drill-In and Completion Fluids. These jobs were carried out in development as well as HTHP Exploratory wells. Job details also included management of the mud plant and chemical storage facility, project engineering, logistics, client briefing/de-briefing and well planning.

Main Duties:

* Knowledge and specialty in Versaclean Synthetic Oil Based Systems, Novaplus systems, Lignite/Lignosulfonate, KCL Polymer, Rheliant and Flo-Pro systems.
* Experience in exploration wells, directional, deviated, lateral as well as development wells. Experience with blowouts, well control, ballooning, total lost circulation, stuck pipe, abnormally pressured zones.
* Experience in completions with KCL packer fluid, CaCl2, NaBr & ZnBr and other completion fluids.
* Mud plant supervision including mixing of all drilling and reservoir fluids, chemical inventory and overall facility management.

Key Drilling Projects:

*

Petro-Canada ¡V Gulf of Paria/NE Coast Exploration (Block 1A/1B & 22)
4 Exploration Wells- Anole1, Zandolie East, Zandolie West, Tegu-1
4 wells were exploratory and full scale completions were performed on 3 of the development wells using CaCl & ZnBr brine.
Max Temp ¡V 170 deg.
Max Depth ¡V 11000 ft.
Mud Type ¡V Novaplus Synthetic System.

Techniques Implemented:
i. Fingerprinting techniques due to HTHP wells.
ii. Connection Drainback.
iii. Hole Cleaning Index.
iv. Optimum Flow Rates.
v. ECD calculations vi. Slug and Barite requirements.
vii. Pumping out of hole rate.
viii. Compressibility Factor.
ix. Oil On Cuttings (daily and average OOC).
x. Solids Control Equipment Efficiency.(5500 and CD 500 centrifuges)

Key Issues:
1. Well control due to large influx- 2 days spent controlling well using Drillers method circulations.
2. Lost circulation- Seepage and minimal losses-Controlled by incorporation of graded LCM materials and LCM sweeps.
3. Hole cleaning problems due to low gpm's and highly deviated holes in 2 wells. This was mitigated using Virtual Hydraulics programs to tell where potential buildup of cuttings may have occurred and to identify ideal gpm's for these sections.
4. Excessive temperatures that dehydrated fluid and increased oil/water ratio.
5. LGS increase-controlled by running and maintenance of CD 500 centrifuges used for barite recovery and LGS removal.
6. Verti-G cuttings dryer maintenance problems that temporarily stopped drilling.

*

Trinmar ¡V Soldado Fields
21 Wells in the East, North & Southwest Soldado Fields (S866-S887)
4 wells were exploratory and full scale completions were performed on 3 of the development wells using CaCl & ZnBr brine.
In addition, Flo Pro solids free reservoir drill-in fluid was used in certain wells.
Max Temp ¡V 148 deg.
Max Angle ¡V 50 deg.
Max Weight ¡V 18.5 ppg.
Max Depth ¡V 11000 ft.
Mud Type ¡V Versaclean Synthetic Oil Based Mud and FLO PRO systems.

Key Issues:
1. Well control operations implemented in 5 of the wells.
2. One blowout couldn't be controlled due to BOP failure and rig abandonment occurred.
3. Pipe stuck differentially in 2 wells.
4. Stuck pipe due to pack-off in 1 well.
5. Severe losses in tophole sections of 2 wells and lower target sections in 1 well. These were mitigated by introduction of LCM in minor loss situations and spotting of viscous LCM pills and squeeze procedures in other severe loss situations.
6. Hole ballooning problems.
7. Shale swelling and Gumbo problems in the first 2500 ft. of drilling wells using Water Based Lignite/Lignosulphonate systems.
8. Hole cleaning problems due to low gpm's and highly deviated holes in 2 wells. This was mitigated using Virtual Hydraulics programs to tell where potential buildup of cuttings may have occurred and to identify ideal gpm's for these sections.
„X Petrotrin- Point Fortin, Parrylands
5 wells

Max Temp ¡V 130 deg.
Max Depth ¡V 6000 ft
Mud Type ¡V KCL Polymer
Lignite/Lignosulphonate inhibitive systems.

Key Issues:
1. Well control on 2 projects.
2. Gumbo and BHA balling in majority of projects.
3. Lost circulation and differential sticking.
4. Logistic problems.

*

Exxon-SW Soldado Exploration- Southwest Soldado
Well- Exxon CV3 Exploration
Target - Lower Cretaceous.
This project was the first of its kind in the South/South West unexplored Soldado region 1000 m inside the Venezuela maritime boundary. An EXXON project.
Helped in design of mud weight profile with limited offset data for correlation.
Max Temp ¡V 159 deg.
Max Weight ¡V 17.7 ppg.
Max Depth ¡V 10100 ft.
Mud Type ¡V Versaclean Synthetic Oil Based Mud.

Key Issues:
1. Ballooning problems that may resemble loss/gain scenarios. These are typically attributed to the elasticity of shales in certain areas. With the pumps on there may seem to be losses but the fluid is gained back once the pumps are shut off.
2. High mud weights and pressure overbalances.
3. Overpressured shale cavings.
4. Hole cleaning issues.
5. Wellbore instability.

„X

Trinidad Exploration and Development (TED)- Cedros, Trinidad
4 wells ¡V Bonasse 10, 11, 12 & 13

Max Temp ¡V 130 deg.
Max Weight ¡V 17.6 ppg.
Mud Type ¡V Gel/Seawater & Lignite Lignosulphonate Inhibitive Systems

Key Issues:
1. Well blowout accompanied by total lost circulation and stuck pipe.
2. Drilling 0.25ppg equivalent over the formation pressure leading to continuous small influxes and high gas on connections.
3. Logistical problems for barite and fresh water due to remote location.
