Liaison with the University of the Witwatersrand in the implementation of, and lecturing, on a post graduate course leading to the award of GDE, or with further research work, an MSc. This course was accreditation by The Welding Institute (UK), and led to the further award of European Welding Engineer by the European Welding Federation (EWF). Duties includde ensuring both course content and duration conformed to the requirements of the EWF.
Preparation and presentation of new welding oriented courses. For example, an overview of Surfacing (hardfacing and cladding), inclusive of wear and corrosion phenomena, associated basic metallurgy, metallurgy for wear resistance, welding and allied processes (MIG, TIG, SUB ARC, Flux Cored, Thermal spraying etc.).
Consulting to Southern African industry in general, in all matters associated with welding, welding metallurgy, heat treatment and the various multinational welding specifications.
Qualification of welders and welding procedures to all national codes, e.g. ASME IX, ANSI B31.1, B31.3, AWS D1.1, EN 287 and 288.
Carrying out engineering investigations on all welding and related failures, reporting and giving recommendations on rectification and/or solutions. When required, giving assistance on welding matters relating to contractual obligations.
Consulting on computer-based weld documentation control systems and their benefits on the shop floor.
Nov 1994 to June 1995: Site Welding Engineer
Babcock Africa Energy (South Africa)
On contract to Babcock via AB Engineering based at Matla Power Station. Responsible for all aspects of welding, heat treatment and NDT. Ensuring all aspects of the job were properly qualified to the applicable codes and that all production targets were met.
The contract involved the replacement of H.P. headers and outlet piping in the superheater and reheater systems. Materials involved an upgrading from a 2-1/2 Cr 1 Mo to A335-P91 martensitic 9 Cr, X20. At the same time, all boiler steam raising elements underwent a G.O. on one unit and a Mid Term Inspection on a further two units.
Maintaining a computerised welding documentation control system and providing problem solving/trouble shooting, both practical and metallurgical was undertaken.
Responsible for 50 welders, 6 supervisors, data clerks and 2 sub-contract companies (heat treatment and NDT).
March 1994 to Oct 1994: Site Welding Superintendent
Babcock Construction Contractors (South Africa)
On contract to BCC via AB Engineering, employed as a welding superintendent on the Acrylo – Nitrile relocation project which involved the dismantling, shipping and re-erection of the plant from Austria to Sasol III, Secunda.
Responsibilities included the daily supervision of all aspects of welding production in the re-erection of piping, tanks and vessels.
Ensuring the correct P.Q.R's covering ADM, BS EN 287/288 and ASME IX where applicable and properly executed. Liaising with the client Linde/Sasol III, in all aspects of welding, heat treatment, NDT and statutory code requirements for vessel reinstatement.
Lastly, providing a metallurgical back-up on site, providing solutions when required and maintaining a computerised welding documentation control system.
Responsible for a staff of approximately 30 welders and 3 supervisors.
Sept 1991 to Feb 1994: Manager, Welding Engineering
Babcock Construction Contractors (South Africa)
Responsible for the management of the Welding Department for all Babcock construction sites and workshop. Development of new welding techniques and processes and the transfer of the appropriate technology to the workface.
Training and qualification of welders to most international standards, E.G. ASME, BS, DIN, TRD etc. Providing an engineering welding service to various departments within Babcock. e.g. R & M, Projects, Engineering and Estimating. Assessing the capabilities of various Sub-Contractors, including heat treatment and NDT companies. Trouble shooting on all Babcock sites, including Refineries and Power Stations. Providing a metallurgical input where necessary.
Development and implementation of a computer based welding Documentation Control System. The size of the program + 57000 Lines 200 integrated programmes.
Jan 1990 to Aug 1991 Site Welding Engineer
Babcock Engineering Contractors (South Africa)
Complete technical responsibility for all welding on the Babcock Mossgass Onshore Contract. Value R650,000,000. Responsible for qualification of all P.Q.R's and W.P.S in compliance with both ASME IX, ANSI B31.1 & 3 and Synfuels specifications. Total number of P.Q.R's required + 70.
Qualification of all welders, to ensure correct code requirements and correct mix of Alloy and Carbon Steel Welders.
Liaison with client and Babcock Site Managers on all welding NDT and heat treatment matters. Providing a metallurgical and trouble shooting service on site. Materials included cryogenic, stainless, inconels, nickel, carbon steel, low temp carbon steel, chrome moly (1.5, 2.25, 5 and 9) and others.
Responsible for the training and qualification of 200 local category 4 welders in conjunction with the East Cape Training Centre. Total welders on site 400.

Responsible for the technical sales of Tubular Welding Wires including Submerged Arc, Open Arc, Flux Cored gas assisted types in both hardfacing and fusion welding processes and for all associated technical and engineering matters. Advising customers of performance characteristics and metallurgical considerations of the above materials and providing direct assistance when using these wires and the development of new alloy welding wires.
