Education
B.S. Petroleum Engineering, University of Wyoming, 1974
Work Experience and Skills Summary
Work experience involved over twenty-five years as a petroleum engineer
for laboratory and field applications of enhanced fossil energy research,
coal bed methane recovery, and environmental remediation. This work
involved the design, construction supervision, field operation monitoring,
and data analysis of pilot and field operations for tar sand, coal bed methane,
and aquifer remediation projects. These projects involved insitu combustion,
steam and water flooding, carbon dioxide injection and polymer flooding.
Field project tasks involved shallow well drilling and completion, injection
and production equipment design and installation, oil treatment, off gas
disposal, water cleanup system design, and data acquisition installation.
Additional tasks involved conducting reservoir analysis and characterizations
to determine oil-in-place estimates for tar sand and enhanced oil recovery
projects and contaminated aquifer remediation. This work involved evaluating
core and log data and injection and production data and then using the information
to conduct computer simulations and determine process performance evaluations.
Professional employment experience include project design and implementation,
project monitoring, coordination, and evaluation. Additional skills include
report preparation with Microsoft Word or Word Perfect software, engineering
design drawing preparation with Cadd software, contouring and isopach map
preparation both by hand and with computer software such as Surfer, and data
base development and maintenance primarily with Microsoft Excel or Quattro Pro
software.
Professional Job Experience
U.S. Forest Service
Encampment and Newcastle, Wyoming
Forestry/Engineering Technician
1969-1975
While attending college, I worked summers and occasionally the fall semester
for the Forest Service. Tasks included surveying, instrument operator, and
crew leader. Projects included laying out logging roads, shooting centerline,
running cross sections and elevations, slope staking, and data recording. Survey
data were also obtained for campground mapping. In addition to the engineering
tasks, forestry tasks included, timber cruising, marking, thinning, and fighting
forest fires.
Laramie Energy Research Center
Laramie, Wyoming
Petroleum Research Engineer
1975-1977
Primary responsibilities included conducting laboratory core analyses and performing
tasks for the conduct of two tar sand in-situ combustion field projects. Specific
tasks included designing and supervising drilling, coring, casing, cementing and
well workover operations. Other tasks included designing and supervising the
installation of piping and equipment. During test operation, tasks included field
operation monitoring, and geological and operational data analysis.
Laramie Energy Technology Center
Laramie, Wyoming
Petroleum Research Engineer
1977-1981
Primary responsibilities included the completion of the second tar sand in-situ
combustion field experiment and the conduct of a tar sand steamflood experiment.
Specific tasks included the continuation of design and supervision of field
operations; design and installation of injection and production equipment;
oil/water separation and oil treatment, off gas disposal, and data acquisition
installation; and data analysis, interpretation and reporting.
Laramie Energy Technology Center
Laramie, Wyoming
Tar Sand Field Project Supervisor
1981-1983
Primary responsibilities included the overall preparation for a fourth in-situ
tar sand field experiment. Specific tasks included supervising geologists and
field personnel; completing a project design and a modeling simulation program;
procurement of all equipment, scheduling, contract preparation and monitoring;
and geologic and data interpretation.
After the completion of the field experiments, specific tasks included evaluating
core and log data, and evaluating injection, production and temperature data, and
then using the information to conduct computer simulations to determine process
performance.
In addition, another task involved the detailed reservoir analysis and characterization
of the Sunnyside, Uvalde and Santa Rosa tar sand deposits for the Synfuels Corporation.
This work included evaluating geologic data to determine oil-in-place estimates and
evaluation of proposed oil recovery techniques for the tar sand deposits.
Western Research Institute
Laramie, Wyoming
Research Engineer/Senior Engineer
1983-1985
Responsibilities included the conduct of laboratory and pilot scale experiments
to evaluate oil shale compaction and retorting, and underground coal gasification
(UCG). Specific tasks included the design, implementation, operation and evaluation
of oil shale compaction experiments, horizontal and vertical oil shale retorting
experiments, and coal gasification experiments.
1985-1990
Responsibilities included assisting the program manager in the development of a
hot-oil surface technique for processing oil shale and tar sand. Specific tasks
included equipment and instrumentation design, procurement, and installation;
experimental operation; and test evaluation and reporting. Another task involved
the design, component procurement, supervision of the construction, and testing
of a high temperature pyrolysis, two-inch, twin-screw conveyor system. This
system was the prototype for future screw conveyor systems used for high temperature
pyrolysis studies.
In addition to the engineering efforts, another effort involved assisting with
program management. Scheduling, budget and milestone tracking, research planning
and report preparation were specific tasks.
1990-2000
During this time period, the development of an in-situ contaminated aquifer remediation
process was a major undertaking. Laboratory and two field demonstrations were completed
and one field test is still in operation. Specific tasks included site characterization,
organic contamination-in-place determinations and process modeling; test pattern design;
piping and well completions; water cleanup system design; procurement and supervision of
piping and equipment installation; and operation monitoring, data analysis, interpretation
and reporting. In support of this effort, two data acquisition and control systems were
designed, components were procured and installed, and the systems operated satisfactorily
during the conduct of these field demonstrations. Marketing and process promotion were
additional efforts.
Another area of involvement included a field demonstration of carbon dioxide injection to
enhance coal bed methane production for Amoco. Specific tasks included piping design,
equipment and instrumentation design, data analysis and interpretation, and presentation
of results.
Finally, two Wyoming reservoir analyses were undertaken to determine oil-in-place estimates
to determine if the reservoirs were candidates for polymer and added-value projects.
Specific tasks involved reviewing production data, analyzing core and log data, and
performing volumetric calculations.
1982-2003
In addition to working as an engineer I have also operated the family ranch located in the
Niobrara/Goshen County region. Operating the ranch has required skills varying from financial
management to equipment maintenance. I resigned from WRI in 2001 because I could no longer work
two jobs and the weather was particularly severe that year. Since that time we have been
restructuring the ranching operation to allow me to go back to work if suitable employment
became available.
