JOB SUMMARY:
As Piping Design Engineer, I am responsible in the designs of piping arrangement of the hull part of any kind of ships.
DETAILED JOB DESCRIPTION:
Bulk Carrier:
I. Piping Arrangement of Double Bottom
- Prepare hull construction to be used for the arrangement of pipes
- Decide on the pipe holes and manholes needed for easy access and installation of pipes
- Prepare and check the diagrams to be used for the arrangement
- Monitor valve checklist and revising the diagram if deemed necessary.
- Confirm on the materials of pipes to be used for the arrangement.
- Decide on the actual location of bellmouth used for suction and discharge of water and fuel oil for proper stripping of liquid in tank.
- Decide on the proper location of butterfly valves for easy access and maintenance.
- Plan the arrangement of pipes such as:
-Bilge Pipeline – pipes used for passage of bilge.
-Ballast Pipeline – pipes used for ballasting and deballasting of tank.
-Fuel Oil Pipeline – pipes used for suction and discharge of bunker oil.
-Heating Pipeline – pipes used for heating fuel oil, arrangements of these pipes are carefully done for proper distribution of steam to maintain the desired viscosity of fuel oil.
-Air Escape Pipeline – pipes used for the exhaust of trapped air inside the tank.
-Sounding Pipeline – pipes used for measuring the level of fuel oil and/or water inside its tank.
-Copper pipeline – pipes used as passage of oil that serves as an actuator for the butterfly valve.
-Pneumatic Pipeline – pipes used for measuring the level of fuel oil using controlled air as a medium.
- Decide on the cutting of pipes for easy installation and proper treatment.
- Design and arrange supports of pipes to limit the vibration and for easy fabrication and installation.
- Prepare the detailed drawing of pipe pieces and supports for fabrication.
- Prepare the yard plan that will be used upon installation using computer aided design software.
- Conduct research of the properties of materials being used using the rulebook of Classification Society where the ship is registered.
- Refer the design to the specifications set by the owner or clients.
II. Piping Arrangement in Steering Gear Room
- Prepare hull construction to be used in the arrangement
- Countercheck the diagrams supplied from the initial planning section that will be used upon the arrangement and revise when deemed necessary.
- Decide on the proper location and positioning of Steering Gear Unit for easy maintenance and operation.
- Decide on the proper location of grease tank that serves as a reservoir of grease for the steering gear unit.
- Plan the proper location of lubricating oil tank for steering gear and hydraulic oil tank used as a reservoir of oil that could actuate the lifting or jack-up cylinder for opening and closing of hatch covers
- Countercheck the arrangement of electrical panels that could possibly give hindrances to the installation of pipes, tanks and pump unit, etc.
- Ensure proper arrangement of pump unit for hatch covers.
- Check the interconnections of pipes from engine room and aft peak tank that passes through the steering gear room.
- Design the duct used for ventilation inside the steering gear room.
- Design the cableway inside the steering gear room that serves as a passage for electrical wirings.
- Ensure proper locations of valves and pumps for easy access and maintenance.
- Decide on the cutting pattern of pipes for easy installation and proper treatment.
- Prepare the detailed design of pipe pieces and supports used upon fabrication
- Prepare the yard plan that will be used upon installation using computer aided design software.
III. Piping Arrangement in Boatswain Store
- Prepare hull construction to be used in the arrangement
- Countercheck the diagrams supplied from the initial planning section that will be used upon the arrangement and revise when deemed necessary.
- Decide on the actual location of pump unit for windlass and mooring winch.
- Check the interconnections of pipes from other plans supplied such as Fore Peak Tank piping arrangement.
- Design pipes such as:
-Chain washing pipes – the arrangement of these pipes are well done for proper washing of chain.
-Hydraulic oil pipes – oil passes through these pipes leading to the mooring winch and windlass during operation.
-Other general pipes – pipes that pass through this room from Fore Peak Tank.
- Proper locations of valves and pumps for easy access and maintenance.
- Decide the cutting of pipes for easy installation and proper treatment.
- Prepare the detailed design of pipe pieces and supports used upon fabrication
- Prepare the yard plan that will be used upon installation using computer aided design software.
IV. Piping Arrangement on Upper deck
- Prepare hull construction to be used in the arrangement.
- Countercheck the diagrams supplied from the initial planning section that will be used upon the arrangement and revise when deemed necessary.
- Plan the location of control stand for hatch covers for easy operation and maintenance.
- Plan the location of nozzle for CO2 pipes, which penetrates, on the cargo hold that serves as a fire-fighting device.
- Decide on the proper location and position of jack-up cylinder on deck.
- Plan the arrangement of deck machineries such as windlass and mooring winch regarding its location and height.
- Arrange hydraulic oil pipes, CO2 pipes, compressed air pipes, wash deck pipes, electric cable pipes, protector for copper pipes, etc.
- Plan the location of control stand for hydraulic operated butterfly valve.
- Plan the location of valves and faucets that could be used during operation.
- Decide on the cutting of pipes for easy installation and proper treatment.
- Prepare the detailed design of pipe pieces and supports used upon fabrication
- Prepare the yard plan that will be used upon installation using computer aided design software.
VII. Piping Arrangement of Side Shell
- Prepare hull construction to be used in the arrangement.
- Countercheck the diagrams supplied from the initial planning section that will be used upon the arrangement and revising when deemed necessary.
- Decide on the location of overboard discharge pipes following the rules and classification of ships.
- Check the interconnections of pipes from other drawings.
- Arrange pipes such as ballast pipes used as interconnection of bottom and topside ballast tank.
- Design of supports and deciding on the actual location to prevent vibration of pipes.
- Prepare the detailed design of pipe pieces and supports used upon fabrication
- Prepare the yard plan that will be used upon installation using computer aided design software.
VIII. Piping Arrangement of Bulkhead
- Prepare hull construction to be used in the arrangement.
- Countercheck the diagrams supplied from the initial planning section that will be used upon the arrangement and revise when deemed necessary.
- Check the interconnections of pipes from other drawings.
- Arrange the pipes that pass through this section of the ship.
- Decide on the cutting of pipes for easy installation and proper treatment.
- Prepare the detailed design of pipe pieces and supports used upon fabrication
- Prepare the yard plan that will be used upon installation using computer aided design software.
Car Carrier
I. Piping Arrangement in Car decks
- Prepare hull construction to be used in the arrangement.
- Countercheck the diagrams supplied from the initial planning section that will be used upon the arrangement and revise when deemed necessary.
- Arrange CO2 pipes used for fire fighting as well as its necessary fittings such as nozzle location for proper distribution of gas during an incident of fire.
- Arrange oxygen and acetylene pipes used for maintenance purposes of the ship.
- Plan on the position of control valve stand that serves as a control for the cylinder used for lifting ramps and arranges the hydraulic pipes attached to it that serves as the actuator.
- Arrange deck scupper lines that pass through all decks.
- Decide the proper location of storm valves attached to scupper lines in which it automatically opens when heavy load of water accumulated inside the pipes.
- Arrange pipes used for bunkering that serves as loading of fuel oil and adding the necessary fittings.
- Decide the proper location of windlass and mooring winch on one of the car decks and design the hydraulic pipes attached to this certain equipment.
- Decide on the cutting of pipes for easy installation and proper treatment.
- Design the supports and deciding on the actual location to prevent vibration of pipes.
- Prepare the detailed design of pipe pieces and supports used upon fabrication.
- Prepare the yard plan that will be used upon installation using computer aided design software.
II. Piping Arrangement in Bow Thruster Room
- Arrange bow thruster machine as well as the pipes attached to it with proper valves and fittings.
- Arrange proper location of bilge hat for efficient draining of water.
- Check on the interconnection of pipes from double bottom and fore deep tank that passes through bow thruster room.
- Arrange pipes using the supplied diagrams with proper guidance from the rules and classification of ships in which it was registered.

IV. Piping Arrangement on Upper Deck for Tankers
- Prepares hull construction to be used in the arrangement.

- Planning on the location of equipments and machines such as deck water seal, vent riser, etc.
- Planning on the overall arrangement of pipes and unit support for proper maintenance and good design.
- Checking all items whether it follows the rules and classification that the certain ship has been registered.
- Decide on the proper location and position of foam fire extinguishing equipment, tank cleaning machines, remote control valve, etc.
- Planning on the arrangement of deck machineries such as windlass and mooring winch regarding its location, height and for easy operations.
- Arrange cargo oil pipes, inert gas pipe, tank cleaning pipes, foam, fire and wash deck pipe, hydraulic oil pipes, steam pipes, compressed air pipes, electric cable pipes, protector for copper pipes, etc.
- Planning on the location of control stand for hydraulic operated butterfly valve.
- Planning on the location of valves and faucets that could be used during operation.
- Deciding on the cutting of pipes for easy installation and proper treatment.

The training program includes the designing of piping arrangement of an Aframax Tanker, Bulk Carrier and a Pure Car and Truck Carrier.
2. Resident Field Engineer, Tsuneishi Heavy Industries, Buanoy, Balamban, Cebu, Philippines (a sister company of Tsuneishi Engineering Co., Ltd); February 1999 to August 1999
The job is engaged in providing revisions and development of the ships' design in the yard. Supports technical ideas to the shipyard-in-charge on aspects relative to the ships design and its' related topics necessary in piping installation, comprehension of piping arrangement, installations of equipment such as control valve stand, lifting cylinders for hatch covers, oil pumps, windlass, mooring winch, emergency fire pumps, etc.
3. Engineer Trainee, Tsuneishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd, Japan; September 1999 to April 2000
Trained on 3D MATES (Mitsubishi Advanced Total Engineering of Ships). The training deals on the designing of piping arrangement of ships with the use of three-dimensional software developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Japan. Arrangement of pipes, making three-dimension models of machines and positioning hull construction models is done through the use of this software.
4. Design Engineer, Tsuneishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd, Japan; May 2001 up to August 2001
The training deals with actual designing of ships using 3D Mates software and AutoCAD. As far mentioned above, the work covers hull piping part of different kind of merchant ships.
5. Design Engineer/OJT, Tsuneishi Technical Services, Phils. ; January 2002 up to May 2002
On the job training for making piping diagram such as fire and wash deck diagram, compressed air pipe diagram, scupper pipe diagram, hydraulic piping diagram, bilge and ballast pipe diagram, pneumatic air pipe diagram, sounding and temperature pipe diagram, air escape pipe diagram, etc. These diagrams cover the hull part of the ships. The training also includes making bottom plug arrangement.
6. Design Engineer/OJT, Tsuneishi Corporation, Japan; January 2003 up to June 2003
Invited by our mother company, to work for them as a technical support engineer for tanker projects. The job covers the entire pump room and upper deck. It includes revising of plans and design due to owner's request. The job also includes in the participation of Pump Test for tankers.
7. Sea Trial/Deadweight Measurement Staff for 52,000 gross tonnage Bulk Carrier specifically on the Hull Part of Ship. Computation of Draft Measurement, Steering Gear Test, Mooring and Windlass Testing, Vibration Test, etc.
