Kuwait National Petroleum Company(From August 2002 onwards)

Safety engineer with KNPC at MAA refinery, the largest of the three refineries at Kuwait operated by KNPC. The complex comprises of different units such as Crude, Fluidised Catalytic Cracker, Sulphur Recovery Unit, Hydrogen Complex, Utilities, Tank farm storage and port terminals. I am involved in the preparation and implementation of safety procedures, carrying out audits and inspections, training in safety management as well as carrying out safety studies like HAZOP etc. The details include

* Establishment of procedures and systems such as Safe Work Permits, Emergency plans, audits, management of plant changes etc. and ensuring effective implementation of the same.
* Organising and carrying out various procedure compliance audits such as work permits, housekeeping, PPE, Scaffolds etc.
* Conducting HAZOP studies and other risk management for the various tasks and modifications in the refinery and tank farm unit
* Co-ordinating the pre-start up safety reviews for the complex.
* Implementing award schemes within the complex.
* Implementing various motivation schemes within the complex.
* Participation in safety Committee meetings in the refinery

I have been entrusted the task of implementing Behavioral Based Safety in the refinery as the facilitator of the Steering Committee.

Heavy Water Projects/ Atomic Energy Regulatory Board( Aug 1980 to Apr 1994)

* Shift In Charge of a large continuous Heavy Water Plant using the H2S- H2O process. Familiar with sophisticated instrumentation and operation/ management of utilities such as compressed air, demineralised water, chilled water, inert gas etc. Was responsible for meeting production and commissioning targets and safety norms including compliance of Systems and Procedures such as Safety Work Permit etc. The job included activities comprising of:
* Planning production targets and ensuring targets are met.
* Planning and ensuring that maintenance activities are carried out to ensure that production streams are on line.
* Co-ordinating preventive and predictive maintenance schedules of equipment with the maintenance department.
* Planning and co-ordinating annual plant turnaround.
* Carry out studies in the plant required for plant improvements.
* Modification proposals for improvement of the plant in co-ordination with the Technical Services Department.
* Performance study of equipment in co-ordination with the Technical Services Department.
* Preparation/ Updation of operating procedures as required from time to time.
* Project management of a large Heavy Water Plant using the H2S- H2O process including project planning/ monitoring. Also undertook different project activities such as preparation of specifications, tendering, technical and commercial bid evaluation and ordering.

* Safety audit, HAZOP and Risk Analysis for the Thane Belapur Industrial belt in Mumbai comprising of Polyolefin Industries Ltd. (PIL), National Organic Chemical Industries Ltd. (NOCIL), Herdillia Chemicals Ltd. Rallis India Ltd., ICI Ltd., Standard Alakal Ltd. etc.
* Carrying out the consequence analysis for chemicals such as phosgene, chlorine, ammonia, hydrogen sulphide, ethylene oxide etc. for the Mionistry of Environment & Forests, Govt. of India.

Deepak Fertilizers and Petrochemicals Ltd. (April 1994 to October 1996)

As Manager (TS) headed the process cell of the Technical Services Department of a large fertilizer and petrochemical complex leading a team of 10 engineers and included among others the following activities.

* Trial studies of the Reverse Osmosis Plant.
* Performance improvement of scrubbers of the Ammonium Nitro Phosphate/ Ammonium nitrate plant.
* Energy audits
* Loss point survey of the Ammonium Nitrate/ Ammonium Nitro Phosphate plant.
* Performance study of different equipment such as heat exchangers, scrubbers, distillation columns, reactors etc.
* Analysis of failures of equipment.
* Review and identification of the effluent treatment schemes and supervision of construction of the secondary effluent treatment plant.
* Reduction in breakdowns of the Amm. Nitrate/ Ammonium Nitro Phosphate plants.
* Reduction in specific consumption of raw materials and utilities in the complex.
* Improvement in the product quality of Ammonium Nitrate.
* Improvement in the performance of the waste stripper of the ammonia plant.

Kothari Sugars and Chemicals Ltd. (October 1996 to January 1998)

As Manager/ Head of Safety Department of the complex which manufactures dye intermediates/ petrochemicals, I was associated with the following activities.

* Establishment and implementation of procedures and systems such as Safe Work Permits, Safety Inspections, Management of plant changes etc.
* Authorising various safety work permits such as hot work/ vessel entry permits etc.
* Co-ordinating external safety audits for the company.
* Carrying out internal audits and periodic inspections.
* Developing various safety training modules and co-ordinating and conducting training classes for various levels of employees.
* Motivating personnel to improve the safety performance.
* Rendering safety advice as and when required.
* Carrying out a HAZOP study for a section of the caustic chlorine plant.

Reliance Petroleum Ltd. (February 1999 to June 2000)

As DGM and head of the Safety department, I was in-charge of the safety activities of the World's largest grass-root integrated Refinery & Petrochemical complex in the world. The complex located at Jamnagar comprises of different units such as Crude, Fluidised Catalytic Cracker, Coker, Sulphur Recovery Unit, Hydrogen Complex, Polypropylene unit, Aromatics unit, Captive Power Plant, Utilities, Tank farm storage and a port terminal. Leading a team of about 10 Safety Engineers I was involved in the preparation and implementation of safety procedures, carrying out audits and inspections, training in safety management as well as carrying out safety studies like HAZOP, risk analysis etc. The details include

* Preparation and establishment of procedures and systems such as Safe Work Permits, Emergency plans, Safety audits, management of plant changes etc. and ensuring effective implementation of the same.
* Organising and carrying out various procedure compliance audits such as work permits, housekeeping, PPE, Scaffolds etc.
* Conducting HAZOP studies for the various modifications in the refinery and tank farm units. This included chairing a HAZOP session for an additional chilling unit in the cryogenic tank farm, modifications in the tank farm area, modifications for pre-commissioning activities, capacity increase as well as process flexibility in the process plants.
* Carrying out risk analysis for various systems and activities in the complex. This included dispersion modeling for release from a stack, location of operators cabin in the FCC etc.
* Co-ordinating the pre-start up safety reviews for the complex.
* Developing training modules and carrying out training for various levels of employees and contractors.
* Developing and implementing award schemes within the complex.
* Co-ordinating external audit carried out by SHELL GLOBAL SERVICES.
* Devising and implementing various motivation schemes within the complex.
