Projects

Internship (11 weeks), Department of Instrumentation, Daniel Den Hoed Cancer Hospital, Rotterdam: Determination of optical properties of phantom solutions. Measurements of scattering and absorption of solutions by diffuse-reflectance spectroscopy and determination of the transfer function of an fiber optics probe. The probe may later be used for the detection of cancer near skin surface, relying on differences in the optical properties between normal and abnormal tissue.

Instruments and methods: Fiber optics, CCD scans in the range of 400-1100nm of solution illuminated by polychromatic light, reference reflectance measurements in an integrating sphere.

Internship (11 weeks), Department of Physical Chemistry, Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam: Introduction to steric asymmetry and energy transfers in state selected oriented molecular collision experiments. The rotational energy states obtained were measured by Laser Induced Fluorescence and the molecular velocity distribution by ion imaging. The work included tuning of ion optics to accelerate and focus ionized molecules on a detection screen. The results contribute to the understanding of energy transfers in non-elastic molecular collisions between asymmetric NO molecules and a collision partner.

Instruments and methods: Tunable pulsed dye-laser, frequency-doubling crystals, 10Hz pulsed molecular-beam machine, Stark molecular state selector, ion optics.

Short project (3 weeks), Department of Analytical Chemistry & Applied Spectroscopy, Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam: Measurements to investigate the protein folding mechanism of gp23*. The unfolded protein has an emission spectrum, which differs from that of the folded form. After a filtering process, the excitation & emission spectra of the protein were measured in four different buffers and changing temperatures.

Instruments and methods: Gel-filtration column, excitation-emission spectrometer.

Graduation project (17 weeks), Department of Physical Chemistry, Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam: Characterization of a pulsed molecular beam in terms of pulse density and molecular velocity distribution. The density within a pulse was measured with a microphone (in a vacuum chamber), under changing conditions such as stagnation pressure and open time. The molecular velocity distribution within a pulse prior to collisions was measured with ion imaging. Results supply information about the properties of the molecular beam prior to collisions and help determine a standard by which, all chopper-pulsed molecular beams may be characterized.

Instruments and methods: 10Hz Pulsed molecular-beam machine, 102-105Hz microphone, oscilloscope, ion optics.
