I am currently in my fourth year of a Masters Degree (MEng) in Mechanical & Offshore Engineering at The Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen. My enthusiastic and dedicated nature contributed to me being awarded the School of Mechanical & Offshore Engineering Prize for Meritorious Performance on Year 1 of the BEng (Hons) in Mechanical & Offshore Engineering Programme. I was nominated to become the vice-president of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) for The Robert Gordon University. Acting as Vice president has allowed me to improve on my presentation, organisation and man management skills. For SPE meetings, I am responsible for arranging and advertising meetings, inviting company personnel, giving talks in front of large audiences and finding sponsorship for the RGU student chapter. It has also provided me a great opportunity to meet and obtain excellent contacts within the engineering industry.

EMPLOYMENT HISTORY

2003–Present Weatherford (Expandable Technology Division), ETD
Student Design Engineer

Working under a principle engineer assisting with research and development projects. The job primarily involves drawing conceptual designs on ProEngineer 2001, followed by undertaking such tasks as report writing and researching technology. The project, which I am currently responsible for, is to undertake FEA on Weatherford's slotted expandables and rotary expansion tools.

2002–2003 Astec Developments, Weatherford
Student Test Engineer

As part of the testing team, I had to design test rigs, work out how to test a prototype, assist with in-house manufacture (using manual lathes and milling machines), of prototypes and other areas involved in ultimately obtaining acceptable test results. I was Project Engineer for a project, which involved investigating the concept of metal-to-metal sealing. This project required me to undertake non-linear FEA calculations; these were carried out using Ansys version 6.1.

2000 – 2002 McIntosh of Dyce

Machine Setter

Machine Setting at the food production company McIntosh of Dyce required a great deal of responsibility and engineering capabilities. As a machine setter I was in charge of up to seven employees. I was fully trained and assessed on two out of the three packaging machines in the department. In basic terms these machines had to be properly setup to ensure that all food is packaged and date coded appropriately.

AMBITION

My main priority is to continue working hard to complete my MEng degree. I have to obtain over 60% in my 4th year exams to achieve this and will graduate in December 2003. Going into the profession of Engineering will provide me with many new and challenging opportunities. I aim to be a successful engineer that thrives on challenge and gains a great deal of job satisfaction when problems are solved. I also hope to complete an MSc programme in Asset Management within the next three years as I have only five modules still to complete. As a member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers IMechE, this demonstrates my commitment to my engineering career, and will help plan the route to becoming a Chartered Mechanical Engineer. My ultimate goal is to go into engineering management as I feel that I perform well under pressure.

INTERESTS

Engineering is at times a stressful and demanding course; therefore I appreciate any spare time, which is taken up by football and motorcars. I regularly see my favorite football team in action and also attend a number of motorcar events. I also find spending time with friends can be a beneficial way to unwind from university life.
