EXPERIENCE DETAIL:
FOR HALLIBURTON (Last half 2004-Apr 2006)
- In SE Mexico as drlg superv in 15-21000' oil wells, overcoming high form press, wtr flows, drld upper holes with oil base mud & 8-1/2" hole underbalance w/ N up to foam condition. My rig set 48-day record for a 15000' well in the area.
FOR ARAMCO (2004) worked:
- In Saudi Arabia, as Drilling Supervisor on rigs drilling 14,000' gas wells, overcoming problems such as: salt water flows, massive mud losses, overpress gas sands with up to 20% H2S, handling of heavy muds of up to 21 ppg.
FOR PRECISION DRILLING (2002-2003) worked:
- In NE Mexico, in the extensive Burgos gas basin, just South of the Texas border, as Drilling Supervisor in several of their seven, Top Drive-equipped rigs drilling 3300' to 10000' gas wells. Through intensive training of crews, optimization of programs and improved selection of bits, BHA's and other drlg tools, my rig became one of the fastest, drilling up to 4 wells per rig-month, most of them under budget, applying slim hole techniques. Savings were big with rig cost at about $40K/day. The 3-1/2" tubingless completions tested after frac job 0.5-2.0 MMCFD. The overpressured gas sands and ballooning shales required our alert, constant supervision. The entire operation was successfully conducted under very strict HSE regs, in a comprehensive turnkey contract of our Precision Drilling/BJ group with Pemex, the national oil company. During the two years of the $250M contract, over 260 wells were drilled, completed and readily put on production, exceeding by some 15% the number of wells contemplated initially. The contract called for our PD/BJ group to build the location, drill the well, complete it, lay the flowline, frac/acidize & test the well and put it on production.
FOR PLUSPETROL (1998-2001) worked:
- In Aug-Dec 2001, worked as Drlg Supt while drilling an exploratory well in the Talara area in N Peru. Planning of well, selecting drlg contractor and service companies, rig inspection, were my responsibilities. The well was drilled observing rigorous safety & environmental regs, within the $4M budget and time allowed in program, without any operational problems. All rigs used with Pluspetrol were Top Drive-equipped.
- From Apr 1999-Aug 2001, in Bolivia, worked as Drilling Supervisor in gas wells as deep as 16000', on remote, mountainous locations, as high as 5300' elevation, in high-dip, very hard rock formations, at the foothills of the Andes, successfully adapting techniques to overcome such problems as: tight formations, heavy mud losses, ballooning shales, water and gas flows, overpressured gas sands and pipe sticking due to clay swelling & differential pressures. Well costs ranged from $8M to $20M. Our close supervision allowed for completing most wells under budget, obtaining minimum formation damage, with wells testing up to 50 millionCFD. Also, inspected rigs & equipment, mentored new national engineers & technicians, established new procedures to prepare final well reports and drilling, workover & maintenance programs, and evaluated & recommended on service company bids.
- For 6 months on an exploratory well drilled to 14000' in the Central Sahara desert in Algeria. Initially, from the Company office in Tunisia, prepared the well program, selected drilling contractor, service companies, materials and drilling tools, inspected rig. Then, on a 28/28 rotation schedule, supervised at well site drilling operations of a Pride Forasol rig, until the end of the well, which was drilled trouble-free, 3300' deeper than originally programmed, at a lower than the estimated $10M cost. Due to Algeria's political climate, at any one time either my relief or myself was the only Company rep in the country.
- In Peru, as Drilling Supervisor in a smooth helicopter operation while drilling a 13000' exploratory well, which was completed well under the estimated AFE cost. Total well expenses were $13M, compared with $30M well cost of other operators in the Amazonian jungle. Also, schooled new personnel and prepared final well reports. Also, supervised deviated drilling of development wells in existing, producing fields. The horizontal wells required use of the latest MWD/LWD technology.
FOR SCHLUMBERGER/IPM (1996-1997), I worked Offshore Lake Maracaibo as:
- Drilling Supervisor in a Schlumberger integrated service contract in Venezuela, in a series of horizontal, short radius, development oil wells being very efficiently drilled, underbalanced, with air or aerated mud, Offshore Lake Maracaibo. With careful supervision, managed to optimize well work time. In less than 11 days, our Jackup rig would move in, drill a new well to 7000+ feet, and complete it including acidization, installation of a prepacked liner in the horizontal section & a submersible electrical pump in the vertical, and putting the well on production. Fast operation saved significantly since fixed rig costs were over $50K/day. This project required our selection of best Top Drive equipped rigs, the latest MWD/LWD technology and best available directional men.
FOR WESTERN SERVICES/PDVSA IN E. VENEZUELA(1990-1995),I worked as:
- Drilling Supervisor in several of the 23 rigs working in the field. All rigs were type C2, with 2,000-HP, three mud pumps, drilling 15-20,000', HPHT, directionally-drilled, multiple-completion, development wells each flowing after acid job as much as 16,000 BOPD, in a huge, new basin with a 7-billion bbl oil reserve. Our contributions on improved drilling & workover procedures permitted the operator to overcome: overpressured zones, mud losses, sloughing or ballooning shales, hard and abrasive sections, high pressure gas zones, differential sticking, concentrations of H2S and other problems. All drilling was efficiently done using inverted emulsion mud and under very strict environmental regulations. During our contract, drilling time per well was reduced by more than 50%, our rig being the 1st or 2nd fastest among the 23. Correspondingly, well cost fell from $20M to less than $7M. At the same time, we managed to constantly improve safety. The last two years of this period were under a Schlumberger integrated service contract.
FOR CRADDOCK ENGINEERING/PDVSA, Venezuela (1987-1989)I worked as:
- Asst Drlg Mgr, in charge of 3 rigs Offshore Lake Maracaibo. Reviewed & approved drilling, workover, acid jobs and completion programs. Procured all drilling and completion equipment needs. Also, supervised successful planning, drilling, testing and completion of high pressure gas wells in the Coro area and 17,000' oil wells offshore Lake Maracaibo, with a minimum of problems.
- For six months: organized and started up Drilling Training School in Maracaibo, with a number of courses and seminars for new engineers, technicians and supervisors, on drilling, production, workovers and well maintenance. Prepared a Well Control Manual, as well as related graphic aids. Installed and initiated operation of Simtran rig floor simulator at well control school.
- Asst Drlg Mgr, for a year, in charge of 3 company-owned rigs drilling development wells in the Llanos, Barinas/Apure area. Supervised drilling/production engineers during all critical operations. Selected rig personnel, tools, well equipment. Advised on drilling, completion, production procedures, safety and well acidizing and testing programs, with a significant increase in efficiency. Trained new national engineers, supervisors & crews. Because of working in remote, isolated rain forest, with difficult logistics, my work schedule was 2 months on/ 2 weeks off.
FOR CITIES SERVICE/OXY (1983-1986), out of Tulsa, OK, I worked as:
- Rig-site supervisor in a Jackup rig drilling an exploratory well Offshore Sri Lanka.
-Rig-site supervisor in a Jackup rig drilling an exploratory well Offshore Mombasa, Kenya.
- In Colombia, rig-site supervision of directional drilling, workovers, frac & acid jobs, testing and completions in the middle Magdalena river valley. Also, prepared well work programs, draw general drilling and workover plans, rig inspections and training of new national engineers.
- Rig-site supervisor on Semisubmersible rig, Santa Fe's Southern Cross, drilling trouble-free, under budget, 13,000' wells Offshore in the Timor Sea, between NW Australia and Indonesia.
- In the U.S., rig-site supervision of wells drilled with a Jackup rig Offshore Texas & Louisiana.
- Petroleum engineer in Peru, supervised production operation, prepared well programs, planned material supplies and supervised exploration & development drilling of 3 heli-hoist rigs in the Amazonian jungle. With better well design and centralization, managed to significantly improve cementing jobs of production liners in the directional wells.
- Field superintendent, on exploratory and development drilling, testing and completion of gas and condensate wells in the Chaco area, Bolivia. Oversaw gas plant construction and later start-up of gas delivery to pipeline.
FOR CONOCO (1980-1982):
- Out of Houston, as Staff Petroleum Engr, I worked doing economic evaluations of production & drilling projects in TX, NM, OK, MT, and WY. Also, I was assigned as on-site supervisor in several wells being drilled in Wyoming, Montana, Ventura & Santa Maria-California, Offshore Louisiana & Texas, in various areas of the Gulf of Mexico. I worked on Jackups, tender-barge and land rigs, supervising at rig-site exploratory and development drilling, workovers, testing and well completions.
