Dear Personnel Department recruiter:

The profile of the Venezuelan Merchant Marine Engineer is focused to the Maritime Business primarily and the Industrial Environment secondarily.

His responsibility on board is to upkeep the continuity of the operations in an efficient and safe mode. In order to achieve this, adequate management must be put into practice, which requires a proper interaction between the crew and the machinery. Such management asks for the adequate academic and practical preparation to understand the operations and maintenance processes, so the correct functioning of the ship is ensured. In addition to this, the Complexity and diversification of the cargo/operations requirement has called for new technologies on board.

The missions of the Engineer Officer are:

At the management level:

Design and execute a maintenance plan suitable to the equipment on board, to do so he counts on support tools such as: specialized and customized software i.e. Amos-D, Atlas Equipment Manager, ISIS, etc, his professional experience and the expertise of the Technical Department of the Shipping Company if that is the case.

To Keep the Ships Engine Department up to the International Safety and Quality Standards (Marpol, ISM Code, P&I, OPA 90, Code of Safe Working Practice, etc) and local regulations.

At the operational level:

To ensure the continue operation of the machinery directly assigned to him under safe conditions, through the appropriate handling and maintenance of them. Due to the continue trade of the ship, there is no place for subcontractors or external personnel on board. Therefore, these maintenance activities are carried out entirely by the respective Engineer Officer, either alone or in conjunction with other crew members assigned to the task. Except for the jobs of great magnitude and difficulty, which demand extra crew only available in the Ship Yards.

This machinery is classified as follows:

Propulsion: Heavy duty Engine of Diesel, electric, turbo (gas, Steam) operation. (from 1.800 Hp to 25.000 Hp)
Power Generation: Generator driven by Diesel Engines, turbines, shaft generator. (from 50Kw to 750 Kw.) Operation: single, parallel. Load Sharing Mode: Symmetric, Asymmetric.
Pumping: Pumps of different operational principles: centrifugal, reciprocating, screw, gear, eccentric. Driven by: Electric motors, Diesel engines, or steam turbines. Applications: Crude Oil (Deep well), seawater, fresh water, black water, oily water, heavy and light fuel (diesel, M.D.O., H.F.O.), lube oil, hydraulic oil, sludge.
Domestic Services:
Water Production: through Evaporators or Reverse Osmosis Water makers.
Hot and cold water circulation (Domestic or Industrial Heaters)
Air conditioning plant: reciprocating hermetic or semi-hermetic compressors, Chillers, Centralized heating & cooling units.
Biologic Sewage treatment Plant.
Vacuum Toilet (Evac), high-pressure jet (jet flush) and air-operated units.
Low-pressure steam generation (6-16 bar): Sunrod type Water tube Boiler, Composite Boiler (with economizer unit), computerized ignition sequence, combustion mapping, and safety shut down i.e. Alpha link.
Steam Turbines Curtis type single stage and gas-operated units (Westinghouse, General Electric).
Air supply (7-30 bar): service, starting and control air supply, reciprocating, gear, centrifugal compressors, lubricated or oil-less type.
Hydraulic system: steering gear, cranes, mooring winches, valve control.
Heavy Fuel Oil, M.D.O., Lube oil purifying system: centrifuge purifier (Alfa-Laval, Mitsubishi), Glacier filter, Magnetic particles separation (moletron)
Condensate System and water treatment for steam applications: plates or pipe condensers of atmospheric or vacuum principle, chemical dosing units.

Two categories of tasks are carried out in The Engine Department:

1-Daily routine
2-Watch keeping during the arrival, departure, cargo taking and discharge operations.

Due to the reduced crew number to perform these duties, High Tech automated process control systems were implemented on board since the early 90's by the Ship's Builders; this was to ensure the accuracy and safety of the operations. These Control systems are similar to the automated arrangement found in the Oil Industry whether is a refinery, Oil Terminal or a pumping station. The watches are kept from a remote room, which is provided with a Main control board, this one comprises of measuring instruments, monitors, electric and computerized control panels, communication and response unit, Alarm & Monitoring system (Data chief) linked to a computer based control system enabled to Start/stop machinery automatically or manually from a remote location (Nor control). All of them make possible the overview of the operations by the Officer on Watch in a safe and precise manner.

Additionally to the above described, it's good to mention that the Venezuelan Oil Company (PDVSA) has always contributed to the development and training of the Future Venezuelan Engineer Officer, through his induction to the Oil Business during his education in his Alma Mater "Universidad Marítima del Caribe" (Maritime University of the Caribbean Area), thus creating him a sense of responsibility towards the relevance of this industry to the economy of the country.

Because of this, many Merchant Engineer Officers have found their place in the Oil Business in its many Stages.

I hope this brief explanation helps you to get a precise idea, of the competitiveness and professional level of the Venezuelan Merchant Marine Engineer Officer and his suitability to perform in the Oil Industry.
