Research projects
Sept. 2001- PhD research- Synthesis of batch distillation processes. Supervisor- Prof. Robin Smith
Sept. 2004 Project aims to develop a systematic methodology which provides for the given feed-
product specifications, a set of near optimal networks of batch distillation sequences of different configurations. The superstructure is formulated as an MINLP problem which is solved using hybrid optimisation (SA-SQP) technique. The superstructure includes recycle of waste products.

Jan. 2000- M.Tech. research - Heuristic based design and operation of Pressure Swing Adsorption
March 2001 (PSA) process. Supervisors- Prof. A.S.
Moharir (IIT, Bombay), Prof. G. Wozny and Dr.
Li Pu (TU-Berlin)

Scope- Due to the complicated nature and multiple decision parameters design of PSA process is not a trivial task. The project developed easy-to-use rules for PSA processes based on physical properties of the system and simulation study. A
shortcut model was developed using the pseudo steady state concept. Concept of minimum residence time was introduced to design the PSA
bed. An empirical correlation was proposed which calculates actual residence time using minimum residence time, and physical properties of the system.

August 1998- B.E. research- Pinch Analysis for utility systems and power generation systems.
Jan. 1999 Supervisor- Prof. Raaj Sharma.
Pinch analysis is performed for utility targeting and power generation systems with the process network. Using Pinch concepts power generation cycles were designed. With the support of results, guidelines were suggested to select and target power generation cycle just analyzing the process Grand Composite Curve (GCC), and to target temperature for utility.
