Work History

2007 to Present Pickering Control Systems Ltd.
I recently setup my own company from which I am continuing to provide services to BNFL at Sellafield as a Senior Control Systems Engineer.

2003 to 2007 Brooksons Engineering Ltd. – Senior Control Systems Engineer
I am currently involved in the upgrade from S5 115U to S7-416 on two of our systems. This also includes the introduction of a Profibus DP network to communicate with MP370 HMI panels, Control Technique Servo Drives, remote I/O stations, Bar-code Reader and a PC that is used to capture X-Ray data. Communications to the PC is achieved via the use of a Hilscher Card and Kepware OPC server.

1996 to 2003 Motherwell Information Systems Ltd – Senior Control Systems Engineer
Whilst working for MIS Ltd my time was spent on site at BNFL Sellafield as part of the control system support group for the Sellafield Mox Plant (SMP). The control system comprises of 48 Siemens S155U PLC's connected to a FactoryLink/Oracle application via H1 Ethernet. Initially this was in the role of a system engineer supporting the Siemens's PLC's and implementing modifications in line with BNFL software change control procedures.
I was nominated as a System Manager responsible for a team of PLC/SCADA engineers and was technically responsible for authorising all modifications that were going to be implemented on the control system. To allow me to fulfill my role I am also nominated as Design Authority, Design Review Panel Leader and Functional Safety Assessor.

BNFL had also aligned its procedures to IEC 61508 which have a high emphasis on validation, verification, impact analysis, design review and safety functions. This increased my responsibilities to include all of the software, hardware, documentation and safety aspects of the control system.

1984 to 1996 P & I Design Ltd – Systems Engineer
P & I Design are a company involved in all aspects of instrumentation and process control systems, in the main for the Fine Chemical Industry, from the conceptual design stage right through to final commissioning. During my time with them I gained experience with a number of PLC's, but the majority has been with Siemen's PLC's. The company also had projects in other industries that I was involved in the main ones were: -

Inco Alloys Limited at Hereford - The project was to control the movement of an automatic Charge Machine, which picked up billets from a conveyor and placed them in a furnace in a defined pattern. The control system comprised of two Siemens S135U's, one on the Charge Machine, and one in a land based panel. Communications between the two was initially by radio but was later modified to microwave.

I was also involved with was the commissioning of the Lancelot Gas Field for Philips Petroleum at their Bacton Gas Terminal in Norfolk.

1980 to 1984 Parkfield Foundries - Apprenticeship
As part of my apprenticeship as an electrician, my first year was spent at an EITB Training Board where I learned basic engineering and electrical skills. The company is involved in the manufacture of iron castings, and I spent the remainder of my apprenticeship in the maintenance/breakdown of the Blast Furnace and associated equipment.
