Professional experience

I am currently working as a Maintenance Supervisor with Petrofac Facilities Management. I am working in Sudan and I'm in charge of all the day do day maintenance and maintenance staff on one of several pumping stations in Sudan. The pumping stations are owned and operated by Greater Nile Petroleum Operating Company and they have employed Petrofac to improve their maintenance, procurement and staff training. I report directly to the Petrofac Technical Manager based in Sudan and I work alongside the oil companies' supervisors and managers at each station. I am responsible for improving their preventative maintenance and breakdown maintenance strategies, advising them on their safety issues, improving their procurement system and training of their staff. Their staff include a mixture of nationalities with varying levels of expertise and abilities.

My last job as Second Engineer (1st Assistant) put me in charge of the day to day running of the ships mechanical, electrical and instrumentation equipment. I was in charge of the engine room staff and I assisted and advised them on their designated duties, and ensured they carried them out in a professional and safe manner in accordance with the company's rules and regulations. This also involved the training of all staff, including cadets.
I reported directly to the Chief Engineer and Superintendent and was part of the shipboard management team. I was in charge of one of the emergency response teams and responsible for ensuring every member of staff understands their safety duties and carried them out in a professional and safe manner in both drills and emergency situations. The company rules and regulations are based on the Code of Safe Working Practices, so I had to ensure all the members of staff were aware of its contents and also knew where to find a copy.
Being part of the ship's management team means playing a major part in the control and implementation of the companies permit to work policies. This involved carrying out risk assessments of any task to be undertaken and ensuring all the relevant paperwork is completed, permits issued and all other staff are aware of the work being undertaken.
I was in charge of the consumable engine room stores and spare machinery ordering. This involved liaising with the Chief Engineer and Superintendent and ensuring that there was a sufficient supply of all equipment and that the set budgets were adhered to. The spares ordering had to be done along side the planned maintenance system so that when maintenance was due, there were enough spare parts to carry out the task. The most recent system I used was AMOS for windows; I have also used Mainsaver.
Having worked from cadet to Second Engineer I have both hands-on and supervisory experience of the following:

* The planned maintenance and repair of diesel engines used for propulsion and electrical generation and the associated equipment. This included various types of 4 and 2 stroke engines ranging in both speed and power output. The engines could be run using heavy fuel oil and distillate.
* The planned maintenance and repair of the ships rotating equipment. This included various types of steam turbines, both rotary and reciprocating compressors, various types of pumps used for general purpose and specialized uses.
* The planned maintenance and repair of various types of refrigeration and air conditioning equipment.
* The planned maintenance and repair of steam generation and ancillary equipment. This included various types of water tube and smoke tube marine boilers ranging in pressure and temperature up to 60kg/cm2 and superheated, steam driven Coffin type feed pumps and electrical driven pumps, both closed and open type feed water systems, boiler water testing and chemical dosing, steam turbines used for propulsion, pumping and electrical power generation, vacuum and atmospheric condensers.
* The planned maintenance and repair of the ships pumping and piping systems. This included the setting and repair of the automatic control systems used for pressure, level and flow regulation, carrying out non-destructive testing on the pipes and associate joins.
* The testing and inspection of the ships lifting equipment. This includes annual inspection and documentation of chain blocks, shackles, eye bolts, wire and canvas lifting straps. It also involved the planned maintenance and repair of the cranes and associate equipment.
* The planned maintenance and repair of the ships lubrication and fuel oil systems and associated equipment. This included the cleaning, maintenance and repair of centrifugal separators, heaters, automatic viscosity controlling equipment, pipes, valves and filters.
* The planned maintenance and repair of the ships hydraulic equipment. This included carrying out the testing, maintenance and repair on all the equipment.
* The testing and maintenance of all safety equipment. This also included training the other members of staff to use and maintain the equipment including the compressed air breathing apparatus and fire-fighting equipment.
* The testing and maintenance of the fire and gas detection equipment.
* The planned maintenance and repair of the electrical equipment. This included all the testing and maintenance on all the switchgear, motors, generators and control equipment.
* Carrying out surveys on various types of equipment. This also included carrying out condition monitoring all the equipment using vibration analysis and other methods.
* The planned maintenance and repair on all the equipment used for the loading and discharging of the cargo. This included the inert gas systems, cargo pumps and pipelines, the automation and monitoring equipment.
* The planned maintenance and repair of all the ships water production and purification equipment. This included on various types of evaporators and sterilisation equipment. The standard of the water was tested regularly and had to be of a very high standard.
* The planned maintenance and repair of the ships sewage plant and associated equipment. This was done in conjunction with all the relevant international regulations.
* Various dry-docking and repair periods in various shipyards around the world. I have had various levels of responsible up to a senior supervisory position dealing directly with the Ship Repair Manager.
