The degree involves managing and implementing complex, inter-disciplinary projects through all their phases including specification, design, development and maintenance. Subjects involved are as follows, Semester One: Reaction Engineering, Transfer processes, Process dynamics and control, Pollution control, Process economics and design optimisation, Semester Two: Technical communications, Group process design project, Research and development project, Individual design project and Dissertation (Reactor Pressure Relief Design). I have greatly improved my communication skills through final year Design Projects and through Project work carried out during my placement. Regular meetings and working together with other team members has taught me how to analyze problems through logical reasoning and producing results on time. PROFESSIONAL EMPLOYMENT

Industrial placement year. 1999-2000

Based in London. I work as a student Chemical/Project Engineer. My general duties included laboratory experimentation, computer applications, and project organisation.

Project Management Experience: Just after 2 months I was responsible for running a project. The project involved integrating an automated miniature reactor system complete with computer acquisition system. With the senior project manager we were responsible for project meetings, drew up project plans and liaised with all participating engineering departments to ensure that everyone was aware of the schedules involved.

Team Working: As a member of the team of planning project engineers I suggested several optimizing procedures to maintain an efficient project time. I suggested the practice of short weekly meetings with all participating engineering departments to help the flow of information within the team so that we all understood each other’s role and could share any research tasks to avoid unnecessary duplication. My work involved intensive teamwork that included pursuing and encouraging other team members during the cause of the project.

Technical Knowledge: I built up extensive knowledge of number of different computer application through my work placement year. I was responsible for suggesting innovations to the old DOS version vent size computer model. I enjoyed using my knowledge on vent sizing to transfer the old DOS vent size package to new Windows vent size version.

OTHER EMPLOYMENT

Position: worked as shop floor assistant, duties included stock control and shelve filling.

Key Achievements: Learning to work in an environment where good interpersonal skills between customers and yourself are vital to the success of the business. I was further able to develop good personal skills, being often faced with working in fast paced environments without losing that customer care touch needed. Also I realised the importance of remaining cool and calm under pressure and also to apply quick thinking to resolve problems as they arose.

Position: worked as production assistant, duties include running an automated packing machine and stock control.

Key Achievements: Able to work in an environment where I was able to extract a lot of experience on team building and demonstrating excellent flexibility in terms of location, type and times of jobs. Working in a major food factory showed dynamism, Reliability and trust.

ACADEMIC INFORMATION

Final Year Research and development project

This project was based on Computer Aided Learning software used in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Loughborough University, to teach Material Balances to first year undergraduates. The task involved detail evaluation of this already used software in terms of user friendliness, checking bugs and introducing new course material.

As a result of this evaluation and a detailed software review, changes were made to ASTutE, taking on board the comments made by the students and staff. The detailed software review of ASTutE was an internal audit of the software. Its purpose served to identify any bugs, mistakes in the questions and feedback and general improvements that could be made, to make the software more effective. Also incorporated into this detailed review were previous comments/suggestions identified by the lecturer.

In order to completely carry out this evaluation a 200-page report was produced and a basis understanding of visual basic and Macromedia author language was necessary to carry out customary changes in the GUI and improve the question input ability for staff.

Final Year Design Project

Essentially this project started as a group of five in which a complete production of 30 000 tons of Maleic Anhydride plant was to be created. A complete mass and energy balances was done compiling to the requirements given by our supervisor. Followed by a P&ID of the entire process and preliminary design of the process equipments, i.e. heat exchangers, evaporator, distillation column, reactor and others.

This design was then an individual task were I was given a task to design a heat recovery and integration system. Using pinch technology a thermodynamically based method that guarantee minimum energy levels in design of heat exchanger networks and the Kern Method I was able to size shell and tube heat exchangers.

COMPUTER SKILLS

Programming languages – I have learnt basic programming in Matlab, Visual Basic and Internet Html.

Software – I am currently competent at using Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Corel Draw, Adobe Photoshop, and I am Computer literate in hardware and assemble PC’s for friends and family. I am proficient with MS Office, Windows Me/NT/98/95/3.1, Internet, AutoCAD, Mat lab, and Aspen plus. I have got basic knowledge of website designing and used FrontPage, and few imaging software packages.

POSITIONS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Member, Engineering projects:
I co-ordinated a team involved in designing a paint mixer. This was done within the required time allocated to us by GEC Alsthom Engineering Systems Limited. I achieved this by being realistic about the time each of us devoted to the project and by close collaboration. This project was my first inspiration on pursuing a Chemical Engineering degree

Member, Chemistry Projects:
I led successful experiments for the chemistry project. These experiments were carried out in the chemistry department of the Wyggeston and Queen Elizabeth College, Leicester. These experiments were for GEC Alsthom Engineering Systems Limited that would assist them to design a manipulator for use at a nuclear power station. This was achieved by being able to function in a team and by being able to consume relevant information from experience Engineers

INTERESTS AND ACTIVITIES

On arriving at university I joined several clubs and societies. I frequently participate with interclub league football and represent the Asian Society of Loughborough University. Every year the Chemical Engineering Department hold a sports events known as Frank Morton, this brings all the ChemEng Departments from every part of the country to participate in this sports events. In my second year I represented my department in Tug-o-War. This year I have joined an aerobic club called Hour of Power and also regularly visit the local health club all these help me maintain my fitness level.
