Responsible for carrying out property risk assessment inspections of insured premises.
Risk assessment scope concentrate heavily on fire risk assessment i.e. inspection on adequacy of fire protection (active and passive fire system), working condition and maintenance standard of system installed and also insured commitment plus attitude towards fire protection and safety.

As insurance risk assessor, surveyor is also involved in early stage of designing and installation of fire protection system when requested by insured. Surveyor will give advice to ensure installation complies to insurance specification which also confirms to local building and fire services acts as well as relevant standard like LPC (Loss Prevention Council), FPA, British Standards and NFPA (National Fire Protection Association).

Surveyor is also involved in supervision of fire protection system installation to ensure risk premises confirms to insurance underwriting expectation.

Inspection of existing fire protection system adequacy include physical inspection and on-site testing of fire protection system. Adequate safekeeping of regular maintenance record, fire protection drawings and manuals is also verified.

Along with fire protection system assessment, fire risks and safety hazards pose by insured premises type of occupancy (example; industrial premises where manufacturing works involved), general condition of property, maintenance standard of building services/facilities, standard of housekeeping and security are also subject to assessment by risk surveyor.

Risk assessment visits on site include interview sessions with range of people mainly managing director, financial controller, accountant, production engineers, building manager/supervisor, safety officer and security officer among others..

Interview session is crucial to obtain among others the correct information on the type of occupancy or manufacturing works involved at the premises in order to identify fire hazard and assessing management practice towards housekeeping, property maintenance, fire safety, health and safety at work practices and security standard at risk premises.

At the end of each visit, surveyor will conduct exit interview together with discussion on loss prevention measures.

Loss prevention measures for hazard reduction (example, recommendations on fire safety, housekeeping and security measures) need to be discussed and agreed with insured to ensure acceptable standard of risk management at economical solution is maintained at risk premises without compromising on insurance and applicable standard and local regulation requirement.

As a risk surveyor, I have in depth knowledge of building services, safety & health procedures (OSHA), fire protection system and building security system. I have attended numerous trainings in fire protection system (LPC, FPA, British Standards, NFPA, FM Global).

I have undergone numerous training in fire protection system (Loss Prevention Council standard, NFPA standard), building security system (physical and alarm protection) and safety & health issues (conducted by DOSH – Department of Occupational Safety and Health).

I was also attached to Royal & SunAlliance regional office in Manchester, UK in 1995 to undergone a month long advanced training by sprinkler system expert surveyors.

Risk assessment report writing is a crucial part of this position. The report contains detail of building construction, type of occupation and manufacturing works involved, details of fire protection system proposed or installed, and opinion on the adequacy of fire protection system, security system in place, housekeeping and management standard.
These are important points for insurance underwriters who utilize the survey report to assess the risk.

Risk surveyor also work closely with insurance underwriting side and also business channels to ensure acceptable risk is kept in company book. This close association involve going through with underwriters/business channels on fire and business interruption loss rating computation, fire special rating and also large risk rating computation.

Risk surveyor also maintain working relationship with fire protection system and security system associations in order to keep abreast of local market practice development.
Risk surveyor also maintain working relationship with Public Fire Brigade authority and local government authorities.

In 1998 I was involved with the working Committee in drafting 'Smoke Management System' local standard organized by SIRIM (Malaysian Standard Body) and also participated by Fire protection system association and Public Fire Brigade.

I was also a committee member of General Insurance Fire Protection Committee which is a technical body to promote risk management awareness within Malaysia General Insurance industry and public.

As Regional Security expert for Royal & Sun Alliance, I have in depth knowledge of building security system like burglar alarm system, central monitoring station linkage (fixed line & wireless system), closed circuit monitors, security guarding and burglar proof safe.
I also liaise constantly with burglar alarm consultants and other security products providers.
I was also a member (year 1999 – 2000) of Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation to promote crime awareness and improvement to public.
