Introduction:

Currently I am employed as a Senior Process Technician in the Luboil Unit at SAPREF (Shell & BP SA Petroleum Refineries) a 180 000 bbls/d refinery situated in Durban on the east coast of South Africa. I have just over eleven years oil refinery experience mainly in the Production/Operations Department.

My previous experience was in a polymer plant (Sasol Fibres) a sub-division of Sasol Secunda. I have had 8 years experience from the inception of the plant until it closed ¡Ó1997. I was employed as a Senior Process Operator. My work involved the operation of a polymer plant which involved various processes like, spinning baths, operating dye baths, spinning rollers and dryers/crimpers, bale press and trouble shooting these machines when we encountered bottlenecks. I was also involved in training of new staff as this was a new plant and I was recruited from the 1st phase of this plant.

Prior to Sasol Fibres I worked with The Frame Group now called ¡* Durban Fibres¡¨ from 1979 until 1989 being 10 years as an Operator in fibre processes. I was also involved in maintenance of these processes like spinning machines, chemical batching, and sampling of colour before spinning of polymer chips into fibre.

Further to this I am a hands on person and love the thrill of troubleshooting machinery, electrical equipment, including pumps, compressors etc.
My current knowledge, skills and training in a process field totals to ¡Ó28 year experience which certainly will add to deliver world class performance.

Overview of Current Work Experience:
o Operate units within the Operating Windows o Liaise with Mechanical/Instrument/Electrical personnel relating to operational issues re: breakdowns, troubleshooting and modifications for smooth operations o Isolation of equipment for maintenance work o Carry our safety walks in field and ensure contractors are working with a valid Permit to Work o Do RAPS for all maintenance work o Ensure optimum operation of the units without compromising safety and company policies o Training subordinates on Luboil panel o Check on any deviations from operating windows and E&S
o Correct abnormal processes on panel o Start up designated items of equipment according to start up procedures o Achieve normal operating conditions within defined timescale o Exchange clear, full and accurate information on designated work area and time at handover o Completing accurate checks & routines in work area in accordance with operating procedures o Maintain & replenish minimum levels of plant & process consumables against standard procedures o Maintain plant & equipment free from contaminants against standard procedures o Maintain Process Conditions within work area making timely adjustments in accordance with operating procedures that does not cause problems outside work area o Report incidents, hazardous conditions or emergencies o Correct incidents, haz conditions or emergencies o Diagnose faults affecting plant condition o Take non-routine accurate field readings against instructions on plant conditions o Communicate accurately, concisely clearly and promptly non routine information on plant conditions o Prepare to take samples to check quality of process against appropriate procedures /documentation o Take samples safely & efficiently using correct methods against instructions to check quality of process o Complete checks & tests within defined timescale for shutdown against operating procedures o Take action to correct abnormal shutdown conditions o Establish equipment shutdown conditions o Shutdown equip to specified state as per procedures & timescale o Establish equipment shutdown conditions o Shutdown equip to specified state as per procedures & timescale o Train Trainee on plant and Panel Operations o Assess progress of Trainee under training & communicate o Prepare equipment for maintenance by maintenance staff as per procedures & timescale o Prepare work area for maintenance as specified by permit to work procedures o Accept back equipment after maintenance o Carry out preventative maintenance of equipment according to schedule, procedures & required time o Prepare to analyse samples which match schedule, instructions & procedures in designated areas to determine quality of product o Analyse samples safely, efficiently in the designated areas as per schedule to determine product o Communicate results of analysis

4. Monitoring and maintaining process & equipment state by completing routine checks in work area
5. Responding to incidents, hazardous conditions or emergencies
6. Collecting, interpreting, and communicating non routine information on plant conditions
7. Providing samples for analysis
8. Establishing equipment shutdown
9. Shutting down equipment
10. Providing on-plant training
11. Contributing to maintenance
12. Carrying out maintenance within agreed scope of authority
13. Analysing samples
14. Deviations from working standards.
15. Reporting of all deviations from normal working hours to the Production Foreman.
16. Non-compliance of company policies and regulations.
17. Process non-conformance.
18. Reporting and keeping up-to-date records of process downtime and equipment failure.
19. Capture of data and analysis thereof.
