Work Experience
Senior Mechanical Engineer AMEC Berca Indonesia, Jakarta, Indonesia 2007 to present
AMEC Berca Indonesia is a joint venture between the UK based international engineering company AMEC, and Indonesia's CCM group. The project I am currently involved with is engineering support for the construction of two offshore drilling platforms deployed off the eastern coast of Russia. The client is Sakhalin Energy and Investment Company (SEIC) a consortium involving Royal Dutch Shell and Russia's Gazprom.
* Troubleshooting and re-design of diesel fuel system for power turbines including pumps, heater and filtration system.
* Analysis of vibration problem with large API 610 firewater pumps.
* Installation of API 674 high pressure positive displacement pumps.
* Troubleshooting of a glycol heating system used for waste heat recovery and space heating.
* Gained familiarity with HVAC system design for offshore platforms.
* Use of HYSYS for hydraulic calculations and basic process simulation.
* Experience with various other equipment, including turbine power generators, diesel engine power generators, diaphragm pumps, pipe penetration fire seals, hoists, winches, padeyes, Stabmaster.
Mechanical Design Engineer Waha Oil Company, Tripoli, Libya 2003 to 2007
Waha Oil Company is jointly owned and managed by Conoco-Phillips, Amerada Hess, Marathon Petroleum and the National Oil Company of Libya. This position primarily involved design and management of oilfield facility upgrade projects.
* Installation of API 610 vertical and horizontal centrifugal pumps, rotary displacement meters, meter prover.
* Replacement of fuel gas supply systems for power turbines at two sites. Project involved the replacement of fired heaters, filter/separators, knock-out drums and interconnecting piping and control valves.
* Installation of fire detection and extinguishing system for crude oil storage tanks.
* Installation of fiberglass produced water piping system.
* Design duties included performing basic process modeling such as hydraulic calculations, working with drafting co-workers in the preparation of process schematics and arrangement drawings, reviewing vendor design drawings to ensure compliance with design standards.
* Project management duties included budget preparation, tracking project labor and material costs, coordinating with construction personnel, overseeing commissioning of equipment.
* Gained familiarity with API 610 for centrifugal pumps and API 682 for mechanical seals.
* Gained experience using HYSYS for process modeling.
* Provided mechanical engineering support to civil engineering projects such as evaluating and selecting ventilation and air conditioning equipment for installation in new buildings.
Mech. Design/Appl. Engineer Weatherford Global Compression, Calgary, Canada 1994 to 2001
Weatherford Global Compression (now Exterran) is a packager of reciprocating natural gas compressors, approximately 100hp to 6000hp in size. I had two positions at this company first in the applications department, preparing quotations for compressor projects, then in the engineering department in a design and technical support role with some project management duties.
Mechanical Design Engineering Position:
* Performed design and analysis of natural gas process and utility fluid systems for natural gas compressors.
* Selected components for process gas and utility fluid systems, such as manual valves, control valves, pumps, heat exchangers, transmitters, RTD's, thermocouples, switches and gauges.
* Designed structural and rotating systems for natural gas compressors.
* Designed pressure vessels and pressure piping to ASME codes.
* Researched rectangular flange design for pressure vessels and wrote a spreadsheet to perform the design calculations, saving the continued expense of hiring consulting firms to perform the calculations.
* Developed a procedure to design nozzles for pressure vessels, which standardized and improved the efficiency of the designs.
* Provided design concepts and calculations for development of standard intake and exhaust systems.
* Performed troubleshooting of operational problems with existing equipment.
Applications Engineer Position:
* Sized and selected major equipment to be offered in quotations on compression projects.
* Reviewed and commented on customer specifications (sometimes quite lengthy).
* Prepared design specifications for sub-equipment and solicited quotations from suppliers.
Engineer In Training Pillar Oilfield Projects Ltd., Calgary, Canada 1993
Worked at two oilfield construction sites in northern Alberta.
* Gained knowledge of field fabrication practices of piping systems, primarily welding.
* Observed types and usage of heavy equipment used in field construction projects.
* Gained knowledge of the types and usage of handheld tools.
Education
B.Sc. Mechanical Engineering University of Calgary, Calgary, Canada Graduated in 1993
* Overall GPA of 3.29 (4.00). Dean's List. Approximate class standing was fourth out of 70 students.
* Awarded Pearson Memorial Bursary and Trans-Alta Bursary for outstanding academic achievement.
* Completed two graduate level natural gas processing courses that included instruction on using HYSYS process simulation software.
* Completed an undergraduate course on Finite Element Analysis in the winter of 2003. This course included two projects using ANSYS version 6.
Professional Registrations and Memberships
* Registered with the Alberta Professional Engineers Geologists and Geophysicists Association (APEGGA).
* Member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). On the Board of Directors of the Southern Alberta Section of the ASME in 2002-03.
Career Interests, Hobbies, Miscellaneous
* Citizenship in three countries: Canada, USA and Ireland.
* Other areas of interest within the field of mechanical engineering include alternative energy systems, design for energy efficiency, fuel cells and hydrogen energy, control systems, mechatronics.
* Member of the board of directors of the condo building where I reside.
* Mechanical aptitude. Examples include hands-on projects requiring the use of basic hand tools such as performing auto repairs, the most complex being a transmission re-build.
* I very much enjoy traveling to and working overseas. The countries I have traveled to so far, starting with the most recent, are: Japan, China, Singapore, Indonesia, France, Spain, Russia, Egypt, Switzerland, Czech Republic, UK, Austria, Italy, Germany, Libya, Malta, Guatemala, Mexico, USA.
