SUMMARY
Experienced Fire Officer and Health and Safety Manager with 20 years experience of fire fighting, emergency planning and response and safety management. I possess fire related and training qualifications. I am keeping my skills up to date as a volunteer fire fighter, mountain rescue operative with the Protection Civil in my local town.
CAREER HISTORY/EXPERIENCE
August 2006 to Present
I own my own Outdoor Activity company in Southern Spain where we work with private clientele. The majority of our work being with students between 16-19 who are preparing for a career in the uniformed services. Previously I worked with these type of students at Tamworth and Lichfield College undertaking a BTEC Diploma Course (more details below).
2001 – 2006
During these dates I worked as a Leading Fire Fighter as well as a Public Service Lecturer for Tamworth and Lichfield College. I was responsible to my Station Manager for training, management and supervision, health, safety and welfare of members of my station. I acted as Incident Commander at operational incidents relevant to my rank.
Also during these dates on my rest days I acted as First Aid Co-Ordinator and Instructor for Tamworth and Lichfield College. This led on to me being offered a position working with students undertaking specific units as part of their uniformed service course. The units covered-
* Dealing with accidents and emergencies
* Disaster planning
* Expedition Skills
* Outdoor and Adventurous Activities
1988 – 2001
During this time I worked for Goodyear Tire and Rubber (GB) Limited with the rank of Sub-Officer. My responsibilities included maintaining a personal and team state of readiness, responding to all fire, medical and other emergencies (including chemical spillages) on the 130 acre site with some 3,500 employees.
I was responsible for inspecting hazardous hot work and other stand by conditions and ensuring hot work permits were issued and checked at the end of each operation or organising stand by crews with the relevant equipment. This also included the discharging of, storing, issue and use of flammable liquids used in the process of manufacturing tyres. These stand by duties occasionally required us to supervise the landing and taking off of helicopters on the test track area.
I was also responsible for the inspection and recording of sprinkler, fixed foam, carbon dioxide fire fighting installations and also maintenance, inspection and recording of portable fire fighting equipment.
Other responsibilities included acting as a mentor to ensure the health, safety and welfare of new recruits on station. For my watch I had to identify training needs of individual personnel and put together training programmes to maintain the sites state of readiness. This also included delivering fire safety theory and practical sessions (ie fire extinguisher, fire evacuation marshall) to key members in high risk areas of the plant.
Before leaving Goodyear, I was part of a team responsible for updating the company Standard Operational Procedures and Emergency Response Manual having been heavily involved in the creation of it some five years earlier. This involved liaison with all the Emergency Services at all levels including the Environment Agency. These procedures also involved a project setting up specialist "mill rescue teams", these are employees trained in extrication techniques to release workers trapped in rubber mills and extruding machines.
As part of my role I helped set up an NVQ (competence based training) in fire fighting awarded by the Fire Service Awarding Body in conjunction with the Fire Service College, Moreton in Marsh.
