Types of projects worked on and responsibilities:
Almost all of the work done in South Africa, Botswana and Mozambique was 2D work while all of the contracts I have worked on in Northern Africa and the Middle East have been 3D designs except for Chad which was 2D work.
While working in the processing center in South Africa, I was fully involved with processing and had no input at all in the acquisition phase.
As a field geophysicist, my main task was to ensure the integrity of the data and monitor the source effort performance. In the later years as senior and chief geophysicist, there was more emphasis on the design side and also how to best meet the client's objectives when faced with obstructions like oil field facilities, rivers, urban developments and the like.
I was not involved with the initial design from a bidding point of view, but once the contract has been awarded, then taking the pre-plot and converting it into a working model with offsets and infills to meet coverage and offset criteria was part of my responsibility.
I was also involved with processing the data up to field cube on all 3D projects. In Chad,
Yemen and Oman, the level of processing was increased to final migrated sections.
Two of the contracts undertaken during my time as Assistant Party Manager were dual source contracts. One was a small transition zone job on the Sinai Peninsular using vibroseis and gunboat while the second one was a flush drilling explosive and vibroseis job in the Fayoum Delta of Egypt.
As an Instructor in Abu Dhabi I was tasked with training field Geophysicists in three levels. (Basic, Intermediate and Advanced)
The basic training was aimed at Junior Geophysicists and focuses on the daily quality control tasks including source QC, instrument testing, creation of final SPS and other similar tasks. The Intermediate training focused on field level data processing while the
Advanced training covered survey design and project management.
