Joined Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company (1 year contract) in April 2007 as an assistant geotechnical engineer for the Al Muharraq and Durrat Island projects carrying out reclamation geotechnical works.
Joined Mouchel in March 2008 as a geotechnical engineer for the geotechnical scheme and detailed design of the Khalifa Port & Industrial Zone. Duties include site supervision, attending weekly client progress meetings BoQ's, involved in the preparation of the geotechnical interpretative report. Issuing of Task Orders to carry out geotechnical works.
Joined Royal Boskalis Westminster in April 2009 (3 month contract) until present date.
EXPERIENCE IN PRESENT EMPLOYMENT SINCE April 2009
Geotechnical Engineer (3 month contract)
Royal Boskalis Westminster, United Arab Emirates
KHALIFA PORT, ABU DHABI
Main duties include testing of dredged reclamation fill by means of Cone Penetration Tests (CPT) and assessing conformity with the contract specifications.
Extensive knowledge for soil improvement techniques:
Surcharging – Monitoring of surcharge settlements on a daily basis. Use of site specific laboratory test (oedometer) data to anticipate immediate, consolidation and creep settlements for 'no preload' and 'preloaded' case scenarios..
Dynamic Compaction – used when the upper 6m exhibits low qc values
Vibro Floatation – Grid spacing calculations carried out (Priebe Method) to obtain an improvement factor to reduce settlements.
Zone Load Tests (5mx5m) – Undertaken for each acceptance area with predicted settlements calculated against measured settlements.
Settlements calculated from cone penetration tests for uniform (50kPa) and shallow foundation (150kPa, Eurocode 7 method) loads.
Routine reclamation testing programme status update using 'Map Info' software package.
Carried out liquefaction anlaysis from CPT data.
Compared CPT (Robertsons 1990) soil classification (Normalised Cone Resistance and Friction Ratio) with retrieved borehole samples to determine a site specific Khalifa soil classification model.
EXPERIENCE PRIOR TO PRESENT EMPLOYER
Geotechnical Engineer
Mouchel, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates
KHALIFA PORT & INDUSTRIAL ZONE, ABU DHABI
Carried out foundation designs for water pumping stations within sabkha zones (silt/clay soil), i.e., use of SPT data to calculate settlements using Schmertmann, Burland & Burbridge, Skempton & Bjerrum, modulus of subgrade reaction (k). Analysed oedometer test results to determine embankment and generalised foundation settlements (2m thick) silt/clay and sand material using classical preconsolidation calculations.
GHANTOOT DEVELOPMENT, ABU DHABI
Carried out canal quay wall (eccentrically loaded bollard) bearing capacities and settlement calculations for rock and soil foundations.
Carried out stone column sensitivity analysis to improve clay effective friction angle parameters to obtain a suitable FOS and required column diameter/spacing below a 12m high embankment. Involved in scoping geogrid/geotextiles beam designs along road sections (worked with Tensar Contractors), especially in sabkha zones where road sections and approaching embankments were to be founded on soft clays/silts.
EXPERIENCE PRIOR TO PRESENT EMPLOYER
Geotechnical Engineer (1 Year Contract)
Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company (Contractor), Manama, Kingdom of Bahrain
Reclamation
AL MUHARRAQ & DURRAT ISLAND PROJECTS, BAHRAIN – Main duties included supervising a team of engineers to carry out CPT testing, borehole drilling, piezometer installation and monitoring of seabed and subsurface settlement plates for two on-going projects. Attended daily progress meetings with consulting engineer to discuss ground investigation progress.
Involved in planning and mobilising of an offshore jack up barge with the aim of investigating the thickness (vibro-coring) and quality of sand material from potential borrow areas. Compiled a beach sand report from dredging operations (hopper/rainbow methods) from limited borrow areas.
Analysing of CPT data using CPT Task software package. Other duties included the evaluation of soil densities of specified site related areas based on comparison of cone penetration resistance for pre and post spill barge discharge, surcharge trials, and compaction trial methods. Involved in the analysing of in situ testing density tests combined with lab compaction testing to determine relative densities of fill material.
EXPERIENCE PRIOR TO PRESENT EMPLOYER
Assistant Geotechnical Engineer
Geotechnical Engineering Division, Atkins Limited, Epsom, UK
Regeneration
DUBAI METRO PROJECT (GREEN LINE); U.A.E – Supervision of the Metro Green Line Ground Investigation, underground and elevated sections. Preparation of geotechnical combined factual / interpretative reports. Determination of subsurface conditions at proposed stations and to provide physical, mechanical and chemical properties of the foundation strata in order to provide sufficient information for design of the underground station and associated structures.
Prepared extensive lab scheduling for the underground section associated with in situ testing such as diagraphy probing, pressuremeter and packer tests combined with laboratory tests to build up a geological ground model. Carried out liquefaction potential assessments (SPT data).
OLYMPIC PARK, LOWER LEA VALLEY; UK – Preparation of the Geotechnical Interpretative Report for the Olympic site, Stratford, London. Compilation of data from previous and ongoing ground investigations to be used for proposed structural, earthworks and foundation design. Carried out schematic pile designs for associated ancillary buildings (20m depth); steel driven piles.
Determination of the ground model and geotechnical parameters within the area and provision of recommendations for foundation design.
ORWELL BRIDGE, IPSWICH, PIER 9 REMEDIAL WORKS; UK – Determination of the ground model surrounding Pier 9 from cone penetration testing data.
