3D Carbonate/Clastics Numerical Modelling
(1998-2000) Basin and Stratigraphic study Centre
University of Manchester

A research study was carried out for two years to understand the interaction between carbonate-siliciclastic sediments in rifted basins and to understand the stratigraphy of such mixed systems. Approaching the problem required developing a 3D numerical model (a programme) to simulate the processes that are needed to be studied (sea-level variations, tectonics, sediment deposition (carbonates, coarse clastics and fine clastics), erosion, carbonate depth dependant generation etc.). I started with developing a clastics numerical model and then with a carbonate numerical model and finally letting the two models interacting together as a single model. The 3D numerical model is written in C programming language. The final aim of the research was to use 3D seismic date and digital satellite images and import these data into the programme and start simulating the processes on real surfaces.
A number of abstracts where published on this research.

Work Experience

(2007-Current) Geoscientist Specialist (Reservoir Characterization, CGGVeritas)
I currently work as a Geoscientist Specialist in the Reservoir Characterization Team in CGGVeritas. The CGGVeritas is a merge between CGG and Veritas and now is counted to be the second biggest company in the world in the domain of seismic acquisition and processing. I have been working on a number of acoustic and elastic inversion projects, porosity estimation projects and fluid substitution. The work involves direct communication and reporting to a variety of clients around the world. It also involves loading and QCing seismic and logs data, editing logs, log calculations, generating synthetics, well logs to seismic match, generating seismic wavelets, editing wavelets, loading seismic data, QC of interpretation and seismic data, generating seismic sub-volumes, seismic data conditioning and building seismic inversion models. In addition, I did a seismic modellization project for finding the best parameters for a new seismic acquisition project. At end of 2008, I moved to Hampson Russell as it has become a CGGVeritas company.

(2000-2007) Seismic Interpreter (PDO)
Performance: I was ranked as above satisfactory for the last 4 years in Petroleum Development Oman (PDO), being one of the best 10 performing staff in exploration (PDO).

2004 - 2007 (Exploration Gas Team, PDO)
I was working as a Senior Seismic Interpreter/Exploration Geologist for the Exploration Gas Team in Exploration Department at Petroleum Development Oman. I was in-charge of a team (part of the gas team) and looking after the Gas Play in a number of provinces (clusters) in South and Central Oman. I was responsible of evaluating the play in each of these areas in terms of geological models, volumetric evaluations, risk assessment of concepts and leads, and maturing them to drillable prospect level, interpret 3D seismic data and depth convert it and generate seismic attribute maps and volumes. In this team, I wrote four well proposals for gas/oil wells and two well resumes. The well proposals encompass not only the geological and geophysical evaluations but also cover the evaluation in terms of HSE, economics, production maturation and well planning that includes assessment of well location and well design. In 2005, I was responsible for looking after the drilling operation and production testing of two wells of which one of them I wrote the well proposal that resulted in a significant hydrocarbon discovery (these are deep wells ranging in depth between 4-6.1km). Following up of drilling operations also involves real time interpretation and contribution to the final results. I was reporting directly to the gas manager, exploration manager and ministry of oil and gas. From time to time, I was leading the gas team in the absence of the gas manager and this demonstrates my leadership skills capabilities. I was involved in regular meeting with production assets. I was a key player in a number of workshops.

In this team, I managed to mature a prospect to a drillable stage and producing a well proposal in less than three months. This did not only demonstrate my technical work ability but also my across function communication skills as the work required a significant inputs from production and drilling assets. Drilling the prospect resulted in a significant hydrocarbon discovery and a new play fairway.

In this team, I was coaching less experienced Omani staff in the team. I was looking after their training requirements and development plans in the team.

2000 – 2004 (Exploration Deep Oil Team, Stringer Team, PDO)
I was working as a Seismic Interpreter/Exploration Geologist for the Deep Oil Team (Stringer's Team) in Exploration Department at Petroleum Development Oman. I have worked in green field as a cluster opener for two clusters in South Oman Salt Basin exploring for deep oil in intra-salt carbonate stringers. During this major projects, I went through all the exploration chain starting from dry hole analysis, screening seismic data (2D & 3D) of an area and mapping it, depth convert mapped horizons, generate seismic attribute maps and volumes, building geological and facies models, evaluate a potential of a basin, risk mitigation, identifying leads and maturing them to drillable prospects, writing well proposals and ending with drilling a wild cat in the two clusters.

As part the geological evaluation of the basin, I was also generating a number of synthetic seismogram and tie them to the wells. This was purely my own initiative to provide a sound and better quality interpretation. I also involved in seismic processing trying to suppress long and short period multiples that made picking top salt impossible. I was also involved in seismic velocity picking for a number of the seismic processing projects. In addition, I was involved in some of the QI work, fault extraction and seismic volume extraction and a paper was published on this work.

As part of my job in this team, I have been involved in a number of projects and I wrote two well proposals, two well Resumes, reviewing portfolio and updating it, follow the operations of a number of stringer wells (deep wells) through well ownership and through team weekend duty and evaluating logs, side wall samples and cores from these wells. I was writing the side wall samples (SWS) programs and core programs for wells of which I have the ownerships. I was involved in the coordination of a number of studies on the carbonate reservoirs within the Oman salt basin.

I was assigned on rotational basis to be the focal point for the team for HSE, IT and website.
