RESEARCH EXPERIENCE

2004- Present: my research has largely concentrated on the application of short-lived, U-series isotopic disequilibria to constrain the time scales of magma formation, transport and differentiation in young volcanic rocks. This research concerns the processes of mantle melting and magma formation within the Earth and a crustal level magma chamber processes. I approach this through the analysis of U-series isotopic disequilibria as well as major and trace elemental concentrations and other radiogenic isotope ratios (Sr-Nd-Pb-Hf) in the volcanic rocks.

In addition to the above stated research project I and my colleagues have developed two new analytical methods:

(i) For precise and accurate 234U/238U and 230Th/232Th isotope measurement by MC-ICP-MS for the application of U-Th disequilibrium systematics, and

(ii) Precise measurement of 228Ra/226Ra for 226Ra determination employing total integration and simultaneous 228Th correction by multi-collector ICP-MS using multiple ion counters, which both are published in Journal of Analytical Atomic Spectrometry.

2002-2004: Geochemistry and geochronology of the Cenozoic mafic lavas from the southeastern Ethiopian rift (the East African Rift System): for the assessment of models on magma sources, plume-lithosphere interaction and plume evolution. For this study I applied major - trace elements, Sr-Nd-Pb isotopes, and K-Ar age dating data.
