Senior Support Specialist (Afghanistan) – Thales Land & Joint
April 2007 – Present
Currently working in ISAF HQ Kabul co-ordinating the planning and implementation of Thales' FOC+ project. We are replacing the existing NATO Secret, ISAF Secret and NATO Unclassified Win2k and NT4 domains with a solution based on Windows 2003. My primary task at this time is planning and executing the migration of the existing NATO Win2k/NT4 and Exchange 5.5 infrastructure to the Thales Win2k3 and Exchange 2003 infrastructure. This is a very challenging roll given the mission critical nature of the systems and the 99.7% availability figures agreed by Thales in their SLA. I have a team of 4 engineers assisting me in this task. As well as planning, I am responsible for co-ordinating my team, preparing management reports and liaising with NATO NC3A on Thales' behalf.
Key skills:
* Windows 2003 Active Directory and Group Policy administration.
* DHCP, DNS & WINS administration
* Microsoft Exchange 2003
* Veritas BackupExec implementation & maintenance
* Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM)
* SMS 2003
* VMware server virtualisation – used for migration testing
* McAfee Viruscan and E-Policy Orchestrator (EPO)
* HP DL series and blade servers and SAN/NAS arrays
* CISCO and 3COM network technolgy
* Various other intelligence and analytical tools used by NATO
* V-Sat, DLOS and fixed line communications link management
Senior Support Engineer (Iraq) – Fujitsu Defence
November 2005 – April 2007
Following my experience working for the UK Military in Northern Ireland. When Fujitsu were looking for volunteers to work in Iraq I put myself forward.
I took up a secondment to Fujitsu Defence for the Synergy Project. This project provides UK Restricted and Coalition Secret communications to the Multinational Force in Iraq. This network comprises a large number of Win2k/2k3 servers and clients dispersed over a wide geographical area linked via microwave and satellite.
This role is much the same as the role I fulfilled in Northern Ireland. Although here much more risk is involved. I have travelled extensively throughout Multinational Divisional South East's operational area. Often remaining on-site for days or weeks whilst new installations and essential maintenance have been carried out. As a senior member of the team, I am ultimately responsible for the installation and commissioning of new servers and comms equipment as well as on-going support. The learning curve has been steep and I feel I have risen to the challenges created by working in this harsh and dangerous environment very well. Since arriving in Theatre I have been promoted twice and had two excellent appraisals from management. I believe this environment agrees with my dynamic, problem solving nature perfectly. I have the "can do" attitude and the willingness to work very flexible hours which is essential to working in this locale.
Key Skills
* Windows 2000 and Windows 2003 Active Directory/Group Policy
* DHCP, DNS & WINS
* Exchange 2003 Clustering
* CA Brightstor Backup
* E-Trust Antivirus
* Internet Information Server (IIS)
* HP Openview
* SMS 2.0
* SQL 2005
* HP DL series servers
* Dell Poweredge servers
* CISCO Network equipment
* V-Sat and DLOS communications link mangement
Key responsibilities:
* Maintaining a large infrastructure comprising Windows 2k/2k3 servers across Theatre
* Configuration and maintenance of CISCO network hardware.
* Ensuring documentation for our in Theatre 1st and 2nd line support teams is accurate and readily available.
* Providing 24/7 call out support for all our equipment.
* Installation of the latest security patches on the servers and creation of SMS packages for all workstations.
* Ensuring that all relevant security documentation is kept up to date and protectively marked data is stored securely. This often involves arriving on site unannounced to perform a spot security audit.
* Ensuring daily backup jobs run successfully and media is marked up and recorded correctly before being shipped off-site to a secure location.
* Providing advice and guidance as well as an escalation path to the 1st and 2nd line support teams.
* Holding regular meetings/teleconferences with both the In-Theatre management and Fujitsu Defence in the UK to ensure they are fully aware of vulnerabilities and opportunities within Theatre.
* Liaising with the Military on a daily basis via morning briefs.
* Gathering information from the Military on additional functionality they would like to see in our systems. Collating this information and passing it to the UK for design, test and integration.
* Carrying out initial site surveys as the military deploy elsewhere.
* Project managing the drawdown of sites and redeployment of equipment elsewhere within Theatre.
* I am currently studying for my CCNA qualification and hope to attain this within the coming months.
Fujitsu Services
November 1998 – November 2005
Technical Support Specialist (Third Line Support)
Key responsibilities:
* Senior member of the fault resolution team for several high profile public and private sector clients
* Meeting SLA requirements on time every time
* Reporting internally and externally on faults, issues and successes
* Mentor and help new starts to the team
* Head up implementation teams on key projects
* Product specialist for Windows NT/2k/2k3 systems
* Experience of EMC SAN and NAS solutions
* Excellent knowledge of Arcserve/Brightstor and Legato backup solutions
* HP accredited hardware specialist
* Ensure 99% uptime on servers & systems within my remit
* Maintain change control procedures and documentation
* Ensure technical library is kept up to date and share knowledge
* Maintain accurate time card records for billing purposes
* Formulate resource (physical and human) costings for new bids and requested value-added service
* I performed a 1 year long secondment to Fujitsu Defence providing I.T. support to the British Forces in Northern Ireland. This occurred before the Ceasefire in Northern Ireland, so there was an element of risk involved. The role was primarily office based, providing remote support to the various military installations throughout Northern Ireland from our Datacentre in RAF Aldergrove. However, I frequently travelled between sites by road or helicopter. Often staying on-site for a number of days carrying out essential maintenance and fault resolution. This role, whilst demanding was very interesting and I enjoyed working in the military environment.

I have worked alongside regular navy staff in the comcens at Faslane, Whitehall and Gibraltar as well as attending courses in HF, VHF and VLF communications at HMS Collingwood the RN's comms training establishment. Cryptography and info/comms security constituted a large aspect of this work.
