Projects:

2001 – 2002 P.N.Daly Consultancy,
Thames Water Provinces Pressure Management Upgrade and Verification.
Value of Contract £645,000

This was one of the first projects of its kind for Thames Water. The task was over 6 counties around Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire, Wiltshire, Gloucestershire and Northamptonshire.
The team created a separate division internally in P.N.Daly to effectively deal with the focus of the task, of which I was chosen to come inside and run.
The project was 42GD Upgrade and Verification of the pressure management systems for P.N.Daly Consultancy Group for client Thames Water.
I was a Supervisor for P.N.Daly managing a team of 6 two man gangs which were identifying the number of assets that Thames had in the Provinces region and understanding if they were still in use, if the DMA's were valid and if the pressures were acceptable to the DWI guidelines.
The work carried out by the team identified 800 assets that were in the ground, 250 of which Thames Water were unaware of and 500 of which were either out of commission or redundant.
The assets that were found to be unusable yet still in commission and causing customer issues were then replaced by our teams for newer versions of PRV to enable a smoother running of the networks.
Tasks performed by myself included work coordination, liaising with the client and the issue of permits to work on Thames assets, running and scheduling training for the teams, regular updates to the Directors of the company and to the performance Directors of Thames Water.

It was from this position I was then asked to run my own division of men to contract alongside RPS Water.

2002 – 2004 P.N.Daly Consultancy,
Thames Water Provinces Pressure Management New Schemes.
Initial Value of Contract £1,250,000

This was under the project code 32GD New Schemes. Thames Water had tasked the company to run alongside RPS Water Services. The goal was to achieve a water saving, in the drought of this year, of 16Meg to secure the supply of one of the areas largest open reservoirs, Farmoor.
With an increased team of myself the Senior Supervisor, another Supervisor and 10 two man gangs we set about the task and at the end of the project managed to identify, design and install 36 new PRV schemes which in total saved 10Meg of water.
This was a great achievement for Thames and was recognised accordingly however, with the drought hitting the UK hard the team also identified the benefit for the optimisation of existing assets.
Alongside the main project we created a splinter group of Optimisation to manage the existing asset pressure down to enable a greater saving overall.
This meant working alongside the emergency services, liaising with the local area managers and the external affairs team in Thames Water.
It was during this time that I proudly became the overall Project Manager for P.N.Daly Ltd. Reporting the progress, cost analysis, design solutions, day to day running of the team.
I was also carrying out the CMI Associates Certification and the Advanced Apprenticeship in Management during this time.

2004 – Ongoing Thames Water UK
Thames Water Engineering, Construction.

The following listed projects are some of those that I have been involved with from the Client side through Thames Water. Being the client I manage and oversee as many as 15 projects per year ranging from £15k to £15m to detail all of these would mean a very extensive CV. Detailed later in the resume are the professional experiences drawn form the work alongside these projects and the roles/duties I was tasked to.

Those detailed are a varied selection of projects, which have been completed or are in completion at the time of writing this resume. As part of the Capital Delivery Team in Thames Water Engineering it has been a very successful few years and Thames are still achieving the capital investment budget of £1bn per year.

North London Network Improvements (Thames Water & Laing O'Rourke Partnership)

Construction Project Manager

I provisionally joined Thames Water Engineering after being approached by them to oversee the design, construction and installation of the London Pressure Management Schemes, which then developed into all engineering capital projects that are to be issued to the construction phase.

Working for Thames I have been the Construction Project Manager for the Client undertaking tasks to ensure that the projects are delivered on time, on or under budget and to be able to troubleshoot any issues.

As the CPM I am the only point of contact for the Design, ICA and the Contractors for the Client. In my team are a Lead Design Engineer, QS, A Principle Project Manager and a Commissioning Engineer. Many of the tasks I have under this role are stated under 'Professional Experience' above on my CV.

3 of the largest projects were the Pressure Management Schemes for Thames Water briefly described below:

* Crouch Hill Reconfiguration – 6RVD. Total Project Value – £7million (Total Water saving 5meg)
* Highbury Pressure Management – 424F. Total Project Value – £700k (Total Water saving 3meg)
* Maiden Lane Network Improvements – 29WD. Total Project Value - £12million (Total Water saving 5meg)

My role was to control the design department including Carl Bro (Now Grontmij), Mouchell Parkman and Fabur Maunsell. I was also the main point of contact for Laing O'Rourke who were constructing the three schemes.

The projects were pressure managing Islington and some of the surrounding area, Crouch Hill and Maiden Lane which are all on the north side of the river Thames in London.

All three projects were based around 3 Main PRV's, ICA and cross connections for the network and were run concurrently. All three schemes are now up and running and are feeding a large population of north London including feeding the Great Portland Street Hospital, Leicester Square, The Royal Courts of Justice, Highbury Stadium, The Strand and Covent Garden.

On the back of this project a Tall building study is now being carried out to see if there is potential to reduce the pressure further (Optimise the PRV) to get an increased water saving overall.

North London Zonal Metering (Thames Water & Barhale/Z-Tech Partnership)

Construction Project Manager

This project was already running when I joined the team. The scope of the project was to install 7 meters on the distribution mains from the local reservoirs in north London. Thames had decided that to calculate the leakage and usage effectively the metering at the reservoirs would need upgrading.

The ITC was agreed at £1.4m and it was decided by the design/construction team that Barhales would be the principle contractor for the works. The reservoirs were ranging from 50 to 100 years old and some of the distribution mains were laid up to 8m deep involving temporary works, line stops and the sinking of caissons. The mains sizes varied from 12" to 36" imperial.

On the back of this project Z-Tech, a specialised metering and ICA company were called in to replace the 4 main meters from the ring main shafts. 2 were at the Hammersmith Pumping Station (2x 900mm) and the other 2 were at Regents Park Ring Main Site, which involved close coordination between London Water Control Centre and the Engineering team to ensure that 15% of London's water stayed on whilst the work was carried out.

Once again I was involved with design coordination, Operations coordination, highways and external affairs as well as customer communication in the sensitive areas within London.

The project succeeded in its goals when it was handed over to Operations (The client) and was under budget by £87k with the final account totalling £2.3m.

Brasenose Pumping Station Upgrade Thames Water & Dean and Dyball
Construction Project Manager

One of the OFWAT deliverable projects handed to myself was to increase the pumping capacity of the Brasenose Pumps from 19mld to 29mld. To enable the team to increase the pump size and not to interrupt the water distribution to a large part of the network a temporary supply needed to be sought whilst the refurbishing of the main Pumping Station was underway.

The project was submitted as a design and build contract between Dean & Dyball and Pell Frischmans. The target date was for the 31st March 2008 and the goal was to have the temporary pumps in place to enable the refit to take place.

The project is still underway with the temporary solution now in place and the refurbishment underway. The project is currently forecast to be overspent which will eat away at some of the risk monies put aside. The current target cost is £3.8m, however due to procurement and internal management issues within D&D the project is over running by 3 months.

There is also a pipeline required to duplicate the mains from the pumping station to the next reservoir in the system. The size designed and programmed for is 450mm DI pipe.

Witney Pipeline (Thames Water and Laing O'Rourke Partnership)

Construction Project Manager

Another of the OFWAT beneficial deadlines for this years 31st target. A pipeline over 4km at 500mm OD in PE. The project was awarded to Laing O'Rourke working with most of the team from the pressure management projects from earlier in my career.

The project was a pipeline from one storage reservoir to another ensuring supply for the future development of RAF Brize Norton airfield and the surrounding housing developments in the next 15 years. Over 10 months the pipeline was installed, with close coordination between us and the Operations team we cross connected 6 times. This was expecially critical due t the main being such an important feed for the local area.

Overseeing the running of the project and tenders to the subcontractors M.A.Roarty we laid pipe in open cut through farmland and through the A40 east west bypass from Witney to Cheltenham. Main liaison was with the farmers and the local community and also the local government officials which happened to be David Cameron leader of the Conservative party, so close communication was needed.

The final forecast for spend is £25k under the agreed ITC of £2.8m.

Tring Pipeline and Pumping Station (Thames Water & Dean and Dyball Partnership).

Construction Project Manager

Another of the pipelines reaching over 4km through the Beacon Hills in High Wycombe for the Thames Valley region of Thames. This project was in two phases, the first was the pipeline from one storage res to a pumping station and reservoir site and a pumping station to increase the throughput of water from one site to another. Due to increased demand on the area overall there was the need to install this under the Capital Delivery programme.

The pipeline was once again open cut, with 3 auger bore sites under historical monuments to ensure that the local area and integrity of the history of the sites were not disturbed. Close correspondence with the local community and with the land agents and farmers was required to enable smooth operation through the works.

The pipeline was in push fit DI 450mm with anchor gaskets to reduce the requirement for thrust blocks. The project was once again delivered on budget and 4 days earlier than programme even though time was lost due to the inclement weather of last year. The final account was £2.4m.

Bailey Hill Reservoir (Thames Water & Murphy Partnership)
Construction Project Manager

A new storage reservoir in Lambourn in Swindon, the local race horse breading grounds/studs, once again to ensure that storage demands are capable of handling the high usage due to new housing and climate change increasing temperatures throughout the south of England.

Murphy were awarded the project after a good Pre ITC cost of £2.2m. The project was to duplicate the cells of the existing reservoir into one main 3rd cell which would hold in total 4meg of water. The construction was in pure chalk due to the geology of the ground which made for good digging once the excavations were underway.

The commissioning is still underway and is due to be completed at the end of May, 5 weeks later than originally programmed due to issues with the Electricity board not being able to move the overhead pylons due to the storms earlier in 2008.
