The Maintenance function prevents failures on the infrastructure, ensuring nothing breaks down and the railway is 100% reliable. Infrastructure maintenance used to be dispersed among several companies until it was brought back in houses in one of the biggest changes the rail industry has seen in decades. In addition to maintaining the track, signalling, electrification equipment, off track operational land and property, the Maintenance function manages on-track plant contracts, telecoms maintenance contracts and a large vehicle fleet.
Key responsibilities and duties
To lead and direct the S&T faulting and maintenance team of three in diagnosis and rectification of faults and maintenance of specific signalling and telecommunication equipment ensuring that all activities are executed to the agreed standard, within the agreed timescale and to minimize train delays.
Lead and guide the team in carrying out the diagnosis, rectification of faults and maintenance requirements of specific signalling and telecommunication equipment in accordance with laid down specifications, frequencies and standards. Ensure efficient and cost effective completion of the allocated tasks in such a way that system and occupational standards are not comprised.
Lead the team in disconnection and reconnection of signalling and telecommunication equipment in association with maintenance activity or other planned works (e.g. P. Way)
Act as directed by the Site Supervisor in special investigations/surveys or in carrying out remedial/renewal work.
Rigorously observe and follow mandatory standards.
Record all work carried out and report quality and productivity shortfalls outside of his/her control to the Signal and Plant Manager.
Ensure tools and plant are in a safe condition and capable of producing work of the required standard for the anticipated life of the tool/plant.
Ensure materials are used economically and unused materials are returned to stock, leaving all worksites clear from completion. Arrange for all scrap materials to be removed from site in a safe manner at the end of each job.
Undertake protection duties in connection with possession of the line.
Ensure safe systems of work for staff including subcontractors, such that work is carried out in accordance with completed risk assessment and method statements to the correct standard of safety with minimum risk to operatives and other persons affected by our activities.
Liaise with Site Supervisor to ensure work is correctly prioritized and assist to plan tasks to be carried out within each activity.
Liaise with Network Rail staff to ensure minimum disruption to train services.
Monitor the attendance, performance and condition of team members to ensure fitness for duty and deal with day to day discipline and welfare of the team.
As leader of a fault team. I have to communicate fully with fault controllers, signallers and with the members of the team.
We have to attend failures swiftly and have to quickly ascertain and diagnose failures whilst still working and following safety procedures.
Our main priority is to keep trains delays to a minimum and day to day maintenance must be of a high standard to reflect this.
