DIRECTOR OF MANUFACTURING, Specialty Minerals Inc., Bethlehem, PA 2004 - 2008
The industrial minerals division of Specialty Minerals Inc. was comprised of 6 natural and 3 synthetic mineral processing facilities. Included in this division were 6 limestone/dolomite mines, 2 talc mines and 2 merchant multi-mineral processing plants; roller mills, jet mills, Air Classified Mills and classifiers; bulk, semi-bulk and bag packaging; over 650 employees and over 4500 SKUs, with approximately 220 million dollars in annual sales. The division serviced automotive, healthcare, construction and multiple smaller specialty niche markets.
* Achieved record divisional safety performance during this period
* Initiator and champion of development of large mill strategy on each US coast that enabled business to accept longer term supply agreement with major corporate customers, resulting in the successful design, construction and commissioning of two very large (73" and 80") pulverizing mills for California and Connecticut, respectively
* Implemented division-wide roller mill optimization program that resulted in collective capacity improvement of over 100,000 tons per year with an expenditure of less than $500,000
* Operating cost improvements to plan of over $1,000,000 per year for four consecutive years, including record energy utilization factors in each year and record labor utilization
* Technical and geological lead in the development of a greenfield United States Pharmacological grade (USP) GCC business from Caribbean carbonates to commercial grinding facilities on Ohio River
* After personal financial analysis, initiated successful product rationalization that resulted in improvement in individual plant's profitability of over $250,000 annually
* Managed divisional capital project spend of over $15,000,000 annually with no major project exceeding budget by more than 3% and no project not being completed on time for a four year period
PLANT MANAGER, Specialty Minerals Inc., Canaan, CT 2001 – 2004
A 600,000 tpy pulverized dolomitic limestone operation, comprised of 104 employees, an open pit mine, bagging, semi bulk and bulk loading of both trucks and railcars. This facility serviced shingle, joint compound and floor tile markets.
* Improved safety performance from 6 LTA to 0 in 3 years
* Eliminated need for contract mining of overburden through optimization of internal mining operations, saving $100,000 annually
* Led business development efforts for conceptualization and implementation of proprietary anti-blocking mineral blend for plastic film market
PRODUCTION MANAGER, Specialty (Barretts) Minerals Inc., Dillon, MT 1997 – 2000
A 140,000 tpy talc mining and processing operation, with 2,500,000 tpy of open pit hard rock stripping, as well as beneficiation, classifying and ultra fine milling processes. This facility serviced ceramic (catalytic convertor), plastic and paint markets.
* Improved plant safety performance from 3 LTA to 0 in 2 years
* Decreased equivalent manning from 114 to 104 through effective labor management
* Improved total plant ore yield from 65% to 72% through process optimization
* Improved mine efficiency by 15% through improved equipment maintenance and better utilization of mobile equipment fleet
PORT INLAND OPERATIONS, Specialty Minerals Inc., Gulliver, MI 1990 – 1997
A 6,000,000 tpy, multiple pit limestone and dolomite aggregate operation on the north shore of Lake Michigan. Had multiple assignments for this location, including Business Development Manager, Production Manager, and Design/Construction manager. This facility serviced construction aggregate and metallurgical flux markets.
* Completed the demolition of an old, obsolete facility with subsequent design and construction of the $34,000,000 new aggregate facility plant on time, within budget parameters and with significant operational savings from plan
* Managed all mine planning, operation, mining and maintenance during commissioning and subsequent full scale operation of facility
* Established a self supervised workforce which remains highly effective in the current operation of this facility
* Developed user friendly financial and operational models of facilities which are still in service
