Position: Project Lead Engineer Cathodic Protection System.
Project: EPIC of Ras Laffan Common Cooling Seawater System, Phase-II, Qatar Petroleum, Qatar.
Introduction: Ras Laffan Common Cooling Seawater system Phase II is a development undertaken by Qatar Petroleum (QP) for providing cooling water supply to rapidly growing mega industries at Ras Laffan industrial city of Qatar.
This project is one of the biggest Concrete Cathodic Protection projects of the Middle East, Where each and every piece of concrete is cathodically protected by means of MMO Ribbon Mesh Anodes, a huge quantities of Eltech200 mesh anode, Titanium Conductor Bar, MMO tubular canister anodes, MMO wire canister anodes, Ag/Ag Cl for water & concrete application, Prepackage Cu/Cuso4 Reference Electrodes, Huge quantities of different size with different colour code of cables, million of plastic rebar's clips and different types sizes of junction boxes etc. 100% Remote monitoring & control system, huge numbers of Digital SMPS multi channels power supplies modules & Oil cooled Transformer Rectifiers for Protection of Piles of pipe supports.
My duties and responsibilities includes but not limited to the following:
Review and comments on design & drawings, finalization of AC power distribution plan, DB, MDB, AC power cables documents, design bases, calculations, assumptions, parameters, prepared design according to the project specifications and client engineering standards. Final design submit to the consultant and to client, forward to vendor to incorporate the client comments, get approval from client across the table explain the design and convince, finally forward to site. The review, comments, submission and follow up the other documents in parallel like, Design basis, VDR, ITP, QMS, Materials specifications & materials approvals/MTO, Cables type, size & schedule document. Power supplies, Remote Monitoring & control system pacification, integration plan for all the scope of work including existing PH 1 CP system and other several documents. Coordination with client, consultant, vendors and procurement for time to time queries and clarification etc. Follow up all the documents till finalize to approve for construction.
Site: Kick start and demonstration of installation, working of CP to client site execution team during starting of very first installation, training and demonstration precaution session to the CP installation crew, necessary precautions & testing during concrete pouring, Follow-up site execution plan, solving and reply of various site quarries difficulties of fixing of shuttering and concrete pouring plan etc.

* The Various projects includes, trouble shooting and maintenance for transformer rectifiers, AC mitigation & stray current studies, remedial action plan and recommendations, integrity of CP system with various method like interruption of power supply and measuring of instantaneous off and ON potential, potential decay tests, Fault rectification of impressed and sacrificial CP system for tank internal, under tank bottoms, pipelines, pilings, vessels etc for various industries and facilities like Rastanura refinery, Rabigh refinery, Yanbu refinery, Luberef Jeddah and Yanbu, Sab-tank, Sipchem, JUPC, Sadaf, Saline Water Conversion Corporation and in many more industries, almost in each and every refinery of Saudi Aramco and petrochemical facilities of Sabic in my tenure.
* Pre-commissioning and commissioning of CP system of SWCC pipeline from Jubail to Riyadh about 450 Km long pipeline. There are remote deep anode ground beds containing high silicon cast ironTA-5 anodes and one pin test station provided at every kilometer.
* The project with Saudi Technit Italy for SWCC. Yanbu-Madina water transmission pipeline, 60" dia. and 425 KM long carbon steel pipeline including 4 branch lines and 9 stations. The project includes, installation supervision, pre-commissioning, commissioning and commissioning report of YMWT, The ICCP system provided for the pipelines, the system consists of 8 deep anode ground beds and for station pipelines about 360 distributed/ surface anode ground beds ground beds provided according to potential gradient rise system.
* Rabigh Refinery, western region/ Saudi Aramco for Al-Suwaidi industrial services. The project includes: CP up-gradation for sea water intake area, steam generation plant and three process areas. The CP system provided for the utility pipelines like nitrogen, oxygen, instrument air, portable water, raw water, oily water, firewater, stem, chemical sewer and firewater equipments etc. Our scope of work includes system designing and engineering, supply of materials, installation supervision, testing commissioning and commissioning report. The CP system designing according to "Potential gradient rise" The system containing 250 TA-4 canister anodes distributed along the pipelines, 6 transformer rectifiers rated of 100V/250Amps. 250 test and bonding stations to monitored the system. The Rabigh Refinery is the existing and one of the old refinery, the condition of buried pipelines is too worst, I modify the whole system by trial and error method during testing and commissioning with the approval of CSD/ Aramco, I was success to complete the commissioning within the contract time frame, on the behalf of successful commissioning the proponent, PMT and client appreciate me and present the appreciation certificates.
* The project consist the -detail engineering & design, Installation supervision, testing and commissioning of CP system of internal and under tank bottoms for 6 water storage tanks at Shoaiba desalination & power plant including QA/QC duties. There are 8 TA-5 anodes distributed around the periphery of each tanks and TA-2 silicon iron solid anode strings, three anodes per string and four strings per tank for internal protection.
* The project consist the Installation supervision, testing and commissioning of CP system for the RTDB-1(Saudi Aramco) pipeline at Rastanura to Dhahran about 60 Km long pipeline. There are remote deep anode ground bed and surface ground beds.
* Temporary Sacrificial CP system installation for NGDC pipeline at Second Industrial City, Riyadh.
* The project with Snamprogetti for Saudi Aramco, Installation supervision, testing and commissioning of MMO ribbon anode grid CP system for two under tank bottoms protection at Haradh GOSP II (Saudi Aramco).
* The project with Khodari & Sons Co. for Saudi Aramco: Installation supervision, testing and commissioning of MMO ribbon anode grid CP system for five under tank bottoms at Duba bulk plant.
* Project with Snamprogetti for Saudi Aramco Qatif GOSP-I /for new entire plant for Installation supervision, testing and commissioning: the MMO ribbon anode grid CP system for six under tank bottoms / soil side. Magnesium ribbon anode CP system for 4 under tank bottoms / Soil side. Aluminum anode strings, 3 anodes per string, 4 strings per tank for internal protection of 4 fire water tanks. About 22 shallow anode ground beds containing 8 TA-4 silicon iron anodes per ground beds, total 11 transformer rectifiers of rated 150V/300Amp. Two anode ground beds per TR for the protection of buried barred cupper and zinc coated grounding network system for the whole plant including substation groundings. About 450 flush fink type test stations and bonding station for the monitoring of protective potential. About 250 firefighting equipments like fire hydrants, fire monitors, valves, foam hydrants etc. protected by sacrificial system/Magnesium anodes. About 500 vent pipes protected by sacrificial system/ Magnesium anodes.
For Saudi Belleli Heavy Industries, Galvanic anodes installation in 7 nos. of vessels Internal.
* Project with Jubail Petrochemical Complex of Saudi basic industries at Sab-tank, Jubail industrial port for ACBI Co. Engineering design, installation supervision, testing and commissioning for the two under tank bottoms protection, MMO anode grid system provided.
* AGOC / KGOC. Khafji-Joint Operations Co. 2 under tank bottoms of protected by Zinc Sheet anodes for ACMC. Sacrificial CP system for sea water intake pipeline and up-gradation of fire water equipments. CP up-gradation for the tank bottoms, replacement of TR and commissioning the system.
* Saudi Petrochemical Co. Jubail (Sipchem) for Nippon Corrosion Japan, The system design by Nippon corrosion Japan and they hire us for the installation supervision, testing and commissioning, CP system for the protection of cooling incoming and outgoing pipelines by MMO wire, protection of cupper ground rods and fire equipments by Magnesium anodes, under tanks bottoms by MMO wire/ piggy-pack system, I was commissioned the system under supervision of Nippon Corrosion' CP specialist.
* For Sab-tank/ Jubail Industrial Port: There are 80 product storage tanks, buried product pipelines, fire water pipelines and equipments of 11 tank-forms of Saudi basic industries (Sabic). We have a contract to carry out the survey to assessment and analysis the existing condition of the entire CP system, weather the CP system protecting the Sabic assets and recommendations for the up-gradation of CP system. The survey includes the following test and measurements, inspection and performance test of TRs. Anode ground beds performance/anode output current and resistance measurement, potential measurement, instant ON & OFF potential, interference test, current drain test, and actual current requirement test by means of portable TR and temporary anode, integrity test of insulating flanges etc.
* For Saudi Aramco Lubricating oil refining company, Yanbu plant. We have a contract for monitoring, maintaining, trouble shooting and recommendation for up gradation for the entire CP system. There are 38 storage tanks and under tank bottoms protected by ICCP system, TA-4 anodes distributed around the periphery of each tanks. The Sacrificial system provided for the utility pipelines in process area, at road crossings and pipeline crossings. The up-gradation project of phase-1 completed during March-June, 2005 on the bases of my 2000 recommendations report for up-gradation and for the remaining phase-2 under bid preparation for the recommendation report of 2005.For Jeddah plant, we have already submitted design documents for the up- gradation of whole plant.
* Installation supervision, testing commissioning of permanent ICCP system for HWTS, Al Khobar–Hofuf water transmission pipeline and stations of Saline water conversion corporation (SWCC). System consists of 9 Nos. CP stations including 4 deep well anode beds and 37 distributed anodes at two stations. Zinc sheet anodes system for surge tank bottom for 8 meter dia. Tank.
* Soil resistivity survey and data collection for design of permanent cathodic protection system for multiple oil production well casings of 34 drilling site of Qatif GOSP-1 and GOSP-2 producing facility of Saudi Aramco. System consists of 34 Nos. of CP Stations including 80 deep anode ground beds for Zate.
* Installation supervision, testing and commissioning of cathodic protection system for buried piles 700 Nos (approx.) at Khuff condensate fractionation plant at Ras Tanura Refinery of Saudi Aramco. The work also includes cathodic protection system for Earthing network, tanks and fire hydrant. The system consists of 13 CP stations including 140 distributed silicon iron anodes.
* Project with Saudi Aramco for Jeddah Refinery: The Project of new CP system design for the entire refinery, the existing ICCP system provided for the under tank bottoms and Sacrificial system for road crossing, the existing CP system completely depleted, there are 68 storage tanks. The purpose of survey to collect the maximum information and data to design the successful CP system. We includes the current pickup test by Swain meter, we feed the DC power by using portable TR and temporary anodes for all the tanks to understand the condition of under tank bottoms, weather the bottom plates picking the current or not, the new designed CP system shall be beneficial or not.
Note. The Jeddah refinery is one of the old refinery, that time, the asphalt layer was using under tank bottom plates.
* Project with water and electricity ministry of Saudi Arabia: Detail engineering design, installation supervision, testing and commissioning of sacrificial system for 21, 35, 16, 18 & 25 km long, 1.2 m dia. CCP pipelines for waste treated water. The system consists of Zinc anodes, install at every 12.5 m spacing along the pipeline and every after 300m three pin test station provided. At present 5 similar projects are going on in Riyadh.
* Installation supervision of MMO ribbon anode grid system of two 38 m dia. tanks and Zinc ribbon anode for other two 8 meters dia. tanks of DHT plant in Yanbu refinery, Yanbu.
* Soil resistivity survey and data collection for designing of on shore well casing in the eastern province of Saudi Aramco for Zate.
* The project with Sabic for Assessment survey for up-gradation of CP system in Petrokemya (Sabic), the survey including following tests, potential measurement, anode output current, actual current requirement test by means of feeding temporary power to existing Galvanic anode or temporary anode and measure the potential shift and TR output, system designing on the bases of recommendations for up-gradation.
* The project with Saudi Aramco: Seven bulk plants, Madina, Tabuk, Duba, Turaif, Abbah, Jizan and Najran, KSA. The Project including design, supply of materials, installation supervision and testing commissioning, there are several tanks for external and internal CP including pipelines. There are external bottoms protected by MMO grid anode system and galvanic system for internal, the anodes installed at bottom only and silicon iron/ TA 4 anodes distributed along the pipelines. The air cooled rectifiers of 40V/ 6A designated for the external bottoms and oil cooled rectifiers designated for the pipelines. The tanks for the Kerosene, diesel, premium gasoline and supper gasoline etc.
3.0 "OFF SHORE".
* The project includes: Installation, installation supervision, testing and commissioning, commissioning report of platform columns and well casings. The platform # Qatif 96/101 & Qatif 20, 29/95 each of consisting 6 and 5 well casings, the system consists of one each CP station. The TR rating of 50 V/ 300 ampere and two pyramid type anodes installed in remote location in the sea bed.
* Installation supervision, testing commissioning, commissioning of unloading berth at Duba bulk plant. The system consisting of two Pyramid anodes and one transformer rectifier.
* Project with Saudi Aramco for Yanbu Refinery Marine facility, CP UPGRADATION PROJECT: Work as Project Coordinator & Project Engineer. There are 4 loading berths for hydrocarbons. The job includes the supply of materials, installation, testing commissioning including the installation of anchor blocks, Pyramid anodes, MMO strings, Retro buoy anodes, fixing of cables on the cable trays and installation of transformer rectifiers. There are 4 loading berths for hydro carbons products, Two berths each of consisting 2 Pyramid anodes, one each Retro-buoy anode and 14 each MMO strings and for other two berths consisting of One each Pyramid anode and 11 each MMO strings and feeding by 19 transformers rectifiers.
This project is also one of the major and difficult project consisting of existing system and concrete foundation demolishing, recasting of foundations, Anode junction boxes installation on the berths, anchor blocks steel ropes fixing for anode cables supports, anode cables terminations, bonding between the columns testing & inspection. Stay at ship and supervise the installation, underwater location decision for anchor blocks and fixing of steel ropes, anodes string and retro boy anodes installation by divers.
