Description: Analyze the laser induced transient acoustic waveforms in solids to obtain unknown material properties. Detect cracks and voids in solids if material properties are known. The experiments were performed on both elastic and viscoelastic solids. The waveforms of laser-generated ultrasound in elastic/viscoelastic solids were also simulated by using ANSYS and FEMLAB. Part of this project was to study the influence of the volume fraction of silicon carbide particles (SiCp) in an Al matrix composite on the elastic moduli of composites.

Data analysis and computation using MATLAB such as integral, Fourier transformation, matrix operations, nonlinear fit, solving transcendental and differential equations.

Other skills:

Ability to operate basic instruments in cleanroom for MEMS/NEMS fabrication processes such as coating, etching, photolithography.
Ability to operate instruments such as piezoelectric sensors, Nd:Yag lasers, Michelson Interferometer, and digital signal processing for weaksignal used in acoustic experiments.
Independent working ability to prepare texts, graphs, tables, and presentations in a professional way. Possess excellent scientific and engineering writing skills.
