Competency Summary:
Core Values & Ethics
Since the start of my post-defense force career in 1996 I worked for two companies, both at managerial level and more often than not under very trying circumstances. Whilst upholding the interests of my Company I have reached all set goals and missions on the foundation of good communication with all people that were directly as well as indirectly involved in the company's projects. From an early time in my career I have been made fully aware of the worth of effective communications in all directions and have therefore always endeavored to forged good relationships and mutual trust with my colleagues, national counterparts, clients, etcetera, without which I would not have achieved the results I did.
Professional competence and mastery of subject matter
I have 26 years experience in the security sector with at least 12 years at management level. During my periods of management it has been my continuous mission to better myself in the academic as well as operational fields. Due to this philosophy I have been serving with distinction the defence force and the security companies I have worked for. These attributes have helped me to make a slight deviation to the construction industry where I have successfully completed a number of assignments and projects.
Cultural, gender, religion, race, nationality and age sensitivity and adaptability
In my career so far I have worked with people of different cultures in Western, Southern and Eastern Africa. I have always shown the greatest respect for my colleagues, employees and sub-ordinates. Because of this I have always managed to develop loyalties, support and respect and to this day I still maintain contact with individuals and officials in the countries were I served. My sincere consideration for all people, regardless of gender, race, culture or standing, won me access to and respect from company managers, officials, and community leaders in many countries. During my first assignment as an-expatriate employee, I realized that unless I learn to speak the language of my counter-parts, I would not be able to build the respect and basis of co-operation needed to reach my goals. Due to a positive mind-set, I could communicate in Portuguese on a comprehendible level.
Identifying priority activities and assignments and adjust priorities as required
As a senior manager I had several challenges to do with the determining and adjustment of priorities. More recently for the past year I managed a start-up operation for the company I currently work for. With limited resources I have had to implement a risk mitigation plan in order to achieve the client's mission of a zero-incident working environment. I decided to concentrate on those areas that had a high and medium impact on the security and safety goals. I have achieved up to now, through constant testing and monitoring programs in place, the said mission and should it be the status quo during my employ as Quality Assurance Manager.
Monitors developments inside and outside the clients' environment to keep informed and anticipates problems
As the Security and Safety Quality Assurance Manager, I need to put my client in a position to anticipate risks and problems. Therefore, in addition to my networking within the Oil and Gas Industries in Soyo, Angola, I undertake regular meetings with the local police, defence force and traditional leader in order to be well informed regarding any situation that might influence my client's operation.
Seeks and applies knowledge, information, and best practices from within and outside. Subscribe, course
Due to the rapidly evolving global security and safety fields within the Oil and Gas industry, as well as the political situations worldwide, I believe that one has to stay on top of developments to be effective. In this regard I make a point of studying contemporary papers and wed-sites on security and safety technologies and techniques to develop my ability to provide quality security and safety advice and support.
Leadership and vision - identifies strategic issues, opportunities and risks and empower others to translate visions into results
I have extensive experience in the management of teams and groups, also in circumstances where I had to lead through leadership rather than authority.
During my service for Gray Security services I had to move beyond what was expected of me to get the Angolan security company whom we managed, on a high level of preparedness in order to safeguard our client's interests in the area. As the military as well as illegal mining activities posed direct threats on the lives of the mining company personnel, we had through innovative security measures and a well established information-flow system, maintain the required level of safe-guarding to let the mine continue uninterrupted.
Remains calm, in control and good humoured even under pressure
Situations in which I have been deployed during my military career and employment in Angola, it has been required of me as manager to keep calm under trying circumstances.
Consistently approaches work with energy and a positive, constructive attitude
My work is also my passion. I remain in contact and deal with issues even after hours and during holidays. Of course I do this with minimum disruption to my private life, which is necessary for a healthy work/life balance.
Demonstrates openness to change and ability to manage complexities
I am of the opinion that the ease with which I changed from a relatively sheltered military career to a civilian, demonstrates my adaptability and ability to manage complexities in Angola, Mozambique and South Africa.
Proven networking, team-building, organizational and communication skills
I consider networking as an important facet of management. In my current appointment as Security and Safety QA Manager, I still utilise all of the contacts that I made during my time working in Angola, to effect security and safety programs required in my scope of responsibilities. Relationships forged during formal as well as informal meetings, have been put to good use during my compiling of Risk Mitigation Plans and the implementation thereof.
I am fluent in English and Afrikaans, and because of my interest to master the basics of the languages of the people I work with, I have a very good working knowledge of Portuguese.
I am familiar with most software programmes including Windows XP Professional, Word, Office, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, etcetera and I use the internet extensively. In addition to that I use broadband, Skype and wireless daily for connectivity and communications (data, voice and video, including telephone and videoconferencing).
Summary of Professional Experience:
June 2006 to
Current Since being appointed as Security and Safety QA Manager, I implemented an effective Risk Mitigation Plan, thereby improved the effectiveness of the contracted Security Company, employed by my employer's client (Company). The main function was to provide a back-stopping service and establishing a regular reporting and feed-back system. I drafted and implemented various policy documents such as a Security Threat Plan, thereby enhancing the function of the Security Company. I improved delivery of security compliance in the Company through briefing and advice to the Security Company and hands on management of the portfolio. I assisted the Company with urgent security queries such as the main threat of theft and liaison with the holding company's Security and Safety management. I am also continuously providing advice both the Company as well as the Security Contractor by way of regular forums and communication.

Jan 2001 to
May 2006 Appointed as Site Manager, my functions were as follows; I was placed in Beira, Mozambique, to start-up a housing restoration and construction project. The project was started from scratch and I was responsible for managing the acquiring of all material required as well as the operational side of the construction. As Health and Safety is a personal as well as the company's first priority, I set up Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) programs which consist of training, monitoring as well as regular assessments of the standard of the practice of HSE. Regarding the environment I established an effective development and land restoration project with the local population. As the project was in the rural areas a large percentage of raw materials were sourced locally and by way of education and assistance, no harm was done to the environment. The project was completed successfully and I was transferred to another housing project in South Africa.
As Site Manager I was responsible for managing a medium-cost housing project of 187 blocks consisting of six flats each. My main functions were the managing of the operational side of the project, concerned with quality assurance and liaison with the contacted HSE advisor contractor. After completion of the contract I took up my current position.

Jan 1997 to
Dec 2000 In Jan 1997, I was appointed as the Contact Manager for Gray Security Services in Angola - Lunda Norte province. My employer was contracted by ITM, a diamond mining company, to manage the Security Company they contracted to safeguard the mining area as well as the surrounding areas against all existing security threats. Through the establishment of training programs, risk assessments, operational deployment of personnel, we managed a zero-percent incident status quo for the total period of my involvement. Emphasis was placed on communication with the local traditional leaders and mine management, thereby being constantly aware of any situation concerning a risk for our client.

Jan 1981 to
Dec 1996 I served with distinction in the South African Army performing a wide variety of managerial and command functions from infantry operations, counter intelligence, security and explosive ordnance disposal. I resigned after serving as for 15 years. Having gone through the ranks starting at the bottom of the rank-level, I had firsthand experience and knowledge of all levels of military management up to the officer's level of Captain. I was trained in mine action, explosives ordnance disposal (EOD), a wide range of infantry functions, spending the last seven years in the Counter Intelligence department, managing a field office concerned with the collection of information concerning any strategic threats. Contributing useful information, our office contributed information to high command, largely contributing to putting them in a position whereby peaceful transition of government was made possible.
