PROFESSIONAL HISTORY
Sept 98 – Present AMEC Group Limited – Darlington, UK
I am currently employed as an Electrical Construction Superintendent. My current duties include the co-ordination of the electrical construction team to ensure that all works are carried out to project specifications, to the installation program and in line with both AMEC's and the clients SHE (Safety, Health, and Environmental) procedures. I am an authorised signature within the AMEC Group purchasing system and I am responsible for material co-ordination, selection and procurement. I report directly to the Project Manager on all construction issues. I attend construction and SHE meetings with the customer, I am the first line of contact for technical problems, offering either direct solutions or seeking solutions through our recognised technical query procedures.
Dartford Cable Tunnel (National Grid Transco) – Site Superintendent (30 Men)
Due to the increased Electrical demand within central London, National Grid Transco (NGT) the UK gas and electricity utilities group, commissioned AMEC Group to construct a new 3 meter diameter cable tunnel from Essex to Kent running under the river Thames. The tunnel will carry a new 400KV cable ring to cope with the new demands on the grid and also have scope to provide expansion for the future. Upon completion the site will be unmanned and be controlled via the new SCADA system from a satalitte office.
Bathgate Compressor Station (National Grid Transco) - Site Superintendent (80 Men)
To keep up with the increased demand within the UK for Natural Gas especially in the southern section of England, NGT commissioned AMEC group to design, build and commission a new 90 Mega Watt compressor station at Avonbridge, Edinburgh, such was the strategic importance of the site it consisted of 2 x 45 Mega Watt NUOVO PIGNONE compressor trains, one duty and the other standby with the option of running simultaneous on demand. This is part of a nationwide program of upgrading the national gas transmission system. The whole site was deemed a hazardous area and as such the installation had to conform to the current ATEX (ATmosphere EXplosive) certification. My duties on the project where to coordinate the electrical construction team including the inspection and testing team, to ensure that the project was carried out safely, on program and the installation was to the high standards that ATEX certification requires. My responsibilities included the day-to-day organisation of 6 supervisors each having a 10-man team of electricians and 2 x 6 man cable gangs
AMEC Netcom - Commercial Department (Review and Allocation of Sub Contracts)
AMEC Netcom is a Telecommunications division of the AMEC Group. During the time that I worked for the division we were actively involved in the 3rd generation mobile communications rollout program, consisting of the installation of rooftop and greenfield telecommunication cell sites for Vodaphone, Orange, O2, T-Mobile and 3. My duties on the rollout program were originally to assist with the logistics associated with the utilisation of labour and the distribution of materials involved with a nationwide contract, offering technical support and ensuring quality assurance requirements were met. In order to transfer the risk of variable volume of work we took the decision to subcontract sections of the build program. I was responsible for identifying suitable sub contractors, agreeing rates and conditions, expediting AMEC's vendor approval process, awarding actual cell sites to sub contractors, resolving technical queries and agreeing final accounts. At the peak of our involvement during the rollout program we were building 40 sites per month and employed some 80 electricians and 50 sub contractors.
Melinar 5 (DupontSA) – Site Superintendent (30 Men)
To counter the increased international demand for PTA (Pure Terephthalic Acid), DupontSA – Europe's leading manufacturer of polyester commissioned AMEC Group to carry out the extension, shutdown and overhaul of their PTA plant – Melinar 5 - at Wilton International petrochemical plant, Teesside. The project was classified as hazardous area Zone 1 & 2 and involved interface between the existing plant and the new extension which included the installation of new main and secondary containment, instrumentation – both intrinsically safe and non-intrinsically safe, small power and lighting, motor drives, control and instrument panels and switchboard extensions. The plant was shutdown for 90 days in which time, working under the DupontSA Permit To Work system, we had to integrate the new installation, overhaul the existing and have the site back in production.
Dupont HMD – Site Superintendent (25 Men)
As part of Dupont UK's ongoing commitment to continual improvement to it's UK operations AMEC Group were contracted to carry out the routine shutdown, upgrade and maintenance of it's HMD Acid works at Wilton International petrochemical plant, Teesside. The project was classified as hazardous area Zone 1 & 2 and involved interface between the existing plant and the upgrade, which included the installation of new instrumentation – both intrinsically safe and non-intrinsically safe, lighting, motor drives, control and instrument panels and modifications to the existing switchboards. The project had a 90 day program which necessitated the plant to be partially shutdown for 30 days in which time, working under the Dupont Permit To Work system, we had to integrate the new installation, overhaul the existing and have the plant back in production.
Pfizer – Site Superintendent (140 Men)
As part of their continued expansion to their UK research facilities Pfizer – the world's largest research based Pharmaceuticals Company contracted AMEC Group to design and build their new research and development facility in Sandwich, Kent. The project consisted of both building services – offices, Labourites etc. and the construction of 'clean' production area's where all installation materials were of stainless steel construction and the installation was to be classified as zone 2 hazardous area. Due to the critical timescale of the program of works the project was based around 24hr working. My position on site was to supervise the night shift construction works which included all cable installation (400,000mtrs) as well as the installation of all switchboards, control and instrumentation panels. At its peak we had 10 supervisors and 140men on site including our subcontractors.
Heerema – Site Supervisor (12 Men)
