With over one million man hours achieved without a single Lost Time Accident, my role is a Site Superintendent responsible for the civil, structural and architectural works in one of four buildings on site. Primarily, this involves ensuring the sub-contractors works proceed in line with the contract programme, to a quality that meets the deign specifications and to a safety level on par with Jacobs Engineering's global standards. Furthermore, I am responsible for ensuring that sub-contractor design queries are resolved as efficiently as possible and identifying, pricing and instructing any additional works beyond the contractor's scope of works.

Working for this Traditional Contractor on this shopping centre & residential development, with strict budget and time constraints, my role was as a Package Manager on the shopping centre fitout. This included: the development of package programmes in line with the contract programme; liaising with the commercial managers on the procurement of both sub-contractors and materials; shop drawing approval and general design development with the architects and structural engineers; the implementation of safety and quality standards; and the on-site management of the works. The packages that I was responsible for included stone/glazed cladding, block work, lifts and travelators, doors and windows, dry lining, tiling, painting, toilet fitouts, pre-cast stairs and external landscaping. This was a challenging role requiring strong planning and control measures to ensure the successful development of the works.

On the world's largest bio-pharmaceutical project, a Bovis Lend Lease/Jacobs Engineering Ltd Joint Venture, I initially worked as a Site Supervisor managing, on site, the fitout process, inclusive of 'Grade A' Clean Rooms using dry wall construction, epoxy painting systems, epoxy flooring systems, stainless steel finishes, metal doors, and goods and passenger lifts. I was then promoted to Site Superintendent to bring the works to a stage suitable for handover to the Commissioning and Validation groups and for GMPc use. During my time, I was heavily involved in implementing and maintaining strict safety standards, implementing quality control standards, programming and co-ordinating works, liaising with safety advisors, commercial managers, architects and structural engineers, as well as with client representatives.

A high specification mixed-use project, I managed the on-site works on the redevelopment of a 16th century palace, an 18th century casino, 3 new office blocks and an 19th century apartment block. This was a challenging role involving many unique problems including overcoming the language barrier, working with a multi-national work force and implementing UK safety standards in a developing country. The result was a successful phased handover of the development to the client and being rewarded with second place in the Bovis Lend Lease European Safety awards.

At Manchester Airport's BA Terminal, I was responsible for the completion works on the new build sector. This included replacing a large sector of Trocal roof, as well as completion works to the air-bridges, lift shafts, fire rated security doors, fire stopping, signage and general finishes.

A fast-track, high specification fit out project, I was responsible for the management of several work packages. This included liaising with client's project manager, subcontractors, architectural and building services design team, on-site management of construction works as well as the implementation of health and safety policy.

My primary role was as an Assistant Project Monitor for the National Lottery Arts Council on various projects ranging in value from £300,000 to £7m. I also participated in a field study trip to Cyprus. This involved a detailed financial, managerial and technical analysis of road building projects, hydro and oil projects, sewerage treatment plants and an airport development.

This article was based on research I conducted whilst as a MSc. student in China.
